Book Synopsis Divided Soul - Spanish Edition by : David Alan Harvey
Download or read book Divided Soul - Spanish Edition written by David Alan Harvey and published by Phaidon Press. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divided Soul represents photographer David Alan Harvey's thirty-year journey through the Spanish and Portuguese diaspora in the Americas. In this selection of over a hundred colour photographs, Harvey explores the exuberance and incongruities of a life and culture that hold for him an endless fascination. The photographs are presented within thematic chapters, each of which is introduced by Harvey's own commentary. The passionate and divided soul of the Hispanic world, where tradition and ritual are inherent to everyday life, is revealed in Harvey's evocative, and often contradictory, images: a pulsating carnival in Cuba's Trinidad, a fervent African tribal ceremony in Brazil, an erotic disco in Lisbon, a Whitsuntide procession in Andalucia and a first Communion in Mexico. Adopting an approach that combines intuition, patience and persistent curiosity - together with a rejection of cumbersome equipment - Harvey succeeds in minimizing the distance between himself and his subjects, producing images that capture the natural choreography of people within places and that resonate with magic.

Download or read book Lost Souls written by David Weissman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lost Souls examines the origins and consequences of the philosophic idea that mind and body are distinct. The author traces mind-body dualism from Plato, Plotinus, Augustine, and Proclus through Descartes and Kant to Nietzsche, Heidegger, Carnap, and Quine. Mind's separation from body has dominated philosophic thinking for millennia, yet most mental activities are now explained in physical terms. What are the implications if mind is material and mortal? Considering both philosophic and scientific ideas about mind, David Weissman explores our options. Rejecting the claim that the character and existence of other things are an effect of the ways we think about or perceive them, he reexamines such topics as meaning and truth, human significance, self, and society. He argues that philosophers have the rare opportunity to renew inquiry by invoking the questions that once directed them: What are we? What is our place in the world? What concerns are appropriate to being here?

Book Synopsis The Soul of Theological Anthropology by : Joshua R. Farris
Download or read book The Soul of Theological Anthropology written by Joshua R. Farris and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-11-25 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent research in the philosophy of religion, anthropology, and philosophy of mind has prompted the need for a more integrated, comprehensive, and systematic theology of human nature. This project constructively develops a theological accounting of human persons by drawing from a Cartesian (as a term of art) model of anthropology, which is motivated by a long tradition. As was common among patristics, medievals, and Reformed Scholastics, Farris draws from philosophical resources to articulate Christian doctrine as he approaches theological anthropology. Exploring a substance dualism model, the author highlights relevant theological texts and passages of Scripture, arguing that this model accounts for doctrinal essentials concerning theological anthropology. While Farris is not explicitly interested in thorough critique of materialist ontology, he notes some of the significant problems associated with it. Rather, the present project is an attempt to revitalize the resources found in Cartesianism by responding to some common worries associated with it.
