The Study Institute was held at Fauske Hotel, Fauske, a small town in the northern part of Norway, 2)rd-29th June, 1974. The members of the Scien tific Advisory Committee were: The Engineering Research Foundation at T. Halm¢ the Norwegian Institute of Technology, Trondheim, Norway W.H. Hardwick AERE, Harwell, Didcot, Berks., U.K. B. Ottar Norwegian Institute of Air Research, Kjeller, Norway J .A. Wilhelm Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center, Karlsruhe, Germany R. Berg Institutt for Atomenergi, Kjeller, Norway The members of the Organizing Committee were: E. Andersen M. Bonnevie-Svendsen G. Jarrett all from Institutt for Atomenergi, Kjeller, Norway. The Advanced Study Institute was financially sponsored by the NATO Scientific Affairs Division. The aim of the Study Institute was to bring together scien tists concerned with fundamental aspects of sorption, solid state physics and reaction kinetics and workers who are occupied with the development of filter systems for controlled and efficient removal of impurities and poisons from air, off-gases, potable water and industrial effluents. The papers presented covered both theoretical and practical aspects of sorption and membrane filtration. The emphasis was on factors which may effect the filter efficiency, on evaluation, optimalization, controlled development of "tailor made" systems, mathematical models and VI economical consideration. The publication of these lectures was made possible through the kind cooperation of the lecturers.

Book excerpt: This book provides researchers and graduate students with an overview of the latest developments in and applications of adsorption processes for water treatment and purification. In particular, it covers current topics in connection with the modeling and design of adsorption processes, and the synthesis and application of cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of relevant aquatic pollutants. The book describes recent advances and alternatives to improve the performance and efficacy of this water purification technique. In addition, selected chapters are devoted to discussing the reliable modeling and analysis of adsorption data, which are relevant for real-life applications to industrial effluents and groundwater. Overall, the book equips readers with a general perspective of the potential that adsorption processes hold for the removal of emerging water pollutants. It can readily be adopted as part of special courses on environmental engineering, adsorption and water treatment for upper undergraduate and graduate students. Furthermore, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers in water production control, as well as for practitioners interested in applying adsorption processes to real-world problems in water treatment and related areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph provides comprehensive coverage of technologies which integrate adsorption and biological processes in water and wastewater treatment. The authors provide both an introduction to the topic as well as a detailed discussion of theoretical and practical considerations. After a review of the basics involved in the chemistry, biology and technology of integrated adsorption and biological removal, they discuss the setup of pilot- and full-scale treatment facilities, covering powdered as well as granular activated carbon. They elucidate the factors that influence the successful operation of integrated systems. Their discussion on integrated systems expands from the effects of environmental to the removal of various pollutants, to regeneration of activated carbon, and to the analysis of such systems in mathematical terms. The authors conclude with a look at future needs for research and develoment. A truly valuable resource for environmental engineers, environmental and water chemists, as well as professionals working in water and wastewater treatment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The important role of separation in various branches of science and technology demands a comprehensive and integrated treatment of the subject. Hence, a science of separation is now emerging that deals with the fundamental physical and chemical phenomena involved in the attainment of separations, as well as with the development and application of various processes. This book aims to present a comprehensive treatment of both fundamental aspects and practical applications of gas separations, purification and related techniques. Gas separations are usually achieved by physical or physicochemical phenomena, divided into equilibrium and rate processes, although chemical reactions may also be involved in this process. The fundamentals of thermodynamics and modelling, both important for better design and process operations, are therefore discussed in this book. Latest developments in gas separations using sorbents such as zeolites, activated carbon, impregnated materials etc. are also handled, as are gas separations using membranes, cryogenic techniques and chemical processes, including catalytic purification. Various gas separation methods are evaluated and compared, together with mixed technologies, in terms of practical objectives such as performance, limitations and cost. A special section is devoted to the promising new developments in accurate gas measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adsorption processes have played a central role in water treatment for many years but their importance is on the rise with the continuous discoveries of new micropollutants in the water cycle (pharmaceuticals for example). In addition to the classical application in drinking water treatment, other application fields are attracting increasing interest, such as wastewater treatment, groundwater remediation, treatment of landfill leachate, and so on. Based on the author's long-term experience in adsorption research, the scientific monograph treats the theoretical fundamentals of adsorption technology for water treatment from a practical perspective. It presents all the basics needed for experimental adsorption studies as well as for process modelling and adsorber design. Topics discussed in the monograph include: introduction into basic concepts and practical applications of adsorption processes; adsorbents and their characterisation, single and multi-solute adsorption equilibria, adsorption kinetics, adsorption dynamics in fixed-bed adsorbers and fixed-bed adsorber design, regeneration and reactivation of adsorbents, introduction into geosorption processes in bank filtration and groundwater recharge. According to the increasing importance of micropollutants in the water cycle, particular attention is paid to their competitive adsorption in presence of background organic matter. Clear illustrations, extensive literature references and a useful index make this work indispensible for both scientists and technicians involved in water treatment.
