Book excerpt: A beautifully illustrated introduction to one of Spain's foremost painters Celebrated as a painter of light and hailed as a "modern of the moderns" by famed collector Duncan Phillips, Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923) was one of the most successful artists of his time. This bright and colorful monograph reproduces 60 of the artist's key paintings, all of which attest to Sorolla's ravishing ability to capture the way light acts on a variety of surfaces, such as textiles, architecture, plants, the ocean and naked skin. Spending his early years in his native Valencia, Madrid and Rome, Sorolla soon garnered the recognition of artists of similar merit such as John Singer Sargent and Anders Zorn. However, wider success would elude Sorolla until acclaimed exhibitions in London, New York and Chicago, held between 1908 and 1911. This addition to Polígrafa's Modern Masters series is an affordably priced and essential introduction to the brilliant work of one of Spain's greatest painters.

Book excerpt: The bravura Impressionist works of the premier Spanish painter of a century ago, showcased and explored in detail by an international team of renowned scholars Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) was the leading Spanish painter of his day, world-famous when Picasso was still struggling to establish a name. This sumptuously illustrated book traces Sorolla's career at home and abroad, focusing on more than 60 canvases. These include portraits, landscapes, the bathers and seascapes for which he is most famous, and genre scenes of Spanish life. His monumental early works established the artist's reputation as an unflinching social realist. Sending pictures strategically to major exhibitions across Europe, Sorolla depicted peasants, fishermen, and sail-makers eking out meager existences; young women forced into prostitution; and naked, disabled orphans. Rarely had Impressionist technique been turned to such provocative ends. As Sorolla found a wealthy clientele toward the turn of the century, his focus turned to sun-drenched scenes of leisure and elegant sociability: beautiful women stroll in fashionable resorts and children gambol on the seashore. Here, leading scholars offer a contemporary assessment of his career and explore Sorolla's relations with the most famous bravura painters of the day, including John Singer Sargent and the Swedish artist Anders Zorn. An illustrated chronology by Blanca Pons Sorolla, the artist's great-granddaughter, provides additional information. Book excerpt: Joaquín Sorolla (born in Valencia 1863 died in Cercedilla 1923) is one of the most successful Spanish painters ever. He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Some of his breathtaking seascapes show how he was familiar with and employed similar techniques as the photograph. His paintings are also a great introduction to Spanish history. Most of his paintings of boats and the sea capture the fishermen in Valencia, who fished from the beach. He has painted several masterpieces of the returning boats being pulled to the beach. The oxen used to pull the boats are captured so strong, so life like, with so much love. He also painted the waiting fisherwomen and the children happily playing. He painted scenes from the lives of the fishermen. Sorollas paintings are extremely powerful and colorful and although he is usually labelled an impressionist, he is also often very naturalist and detailed. The reader is kindly referred to our book about Sorollas landscapes. This book is not a catalogue, the authors have put together a narrative and the reader may find some of the paintings in our other books as well.

Book excerpt: Valencian master Sorolla's Impressionist paintings depict the most beautiful gardens and architecture in Spain. Like Claude Monet's celebrated plein air landscapes at Giverny, the series collected in this book represents among the best-loved examples of Joaquín Sorolla's (1863-1923) work, and a window into the Spanish painter's quest to capture the essence of a garden. Described by Monet as "the master of light," Sorolla and his landscapes, formal portraits, and historically themed canvases drew comparisons to contemporary American painter John Singer Sargent. Sorolla had achieved renown on both sides of the Atlantic for grand scenes of Spanish life when he began a personal series of garden works, presented completely for the first time in this publication. Painted at the palaces of La Granja and the Alcázar in Seville, the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada, and at the painter's home in Madrid, these Impressionist works allowed Sorolla to apply his signature loose brushwork and training as a photographer's lighting assistant to gardens and the sculptures, architecture, and sitters that frame and animate them. Sorolla depicted reflections in fountains and pools, the sunlight dappling his glamorous sitters, sprays of orange blossoms, and shaded blue-and-white tile as he endeavored to render the radiant peace of a summer afternoon.

He was a genius in capturing the essence of the scene he was painting. He lived while photography was being invented and popularized. Joaquín Sorolla painted the most wonderful beach scenes and fisheries scenes from his native Valencia. His picture The Return from Fishing (1894) was much admired at the Paris Salon and was acquired by the state for the Musée du Luxembourg. It indicated the direction of his mature output. A special exhibition of his works-figure subjects, landscapes and portraits-at the Galeries Georges Petit in Paris in 1906 eclipsed all his earlier successes and led to his appointment as Officer of the Legion of Honour. The show included nearly 500 works, early paintings as well as recent sun-drenched beach scenes, landscapes, and portraits, a productivity which amazed critics and was a financial triumph. Though subsequent large-scale exhibitions in Germany and London were greeted with more restraint, while in England in 1908 Sorolla met Archer Milton Huntington, who made him a member of The Hispanic Society of America in New York, and invited him to exhibit there in 1909. The exhibition comprised 356 paintings, 195 of which sold. Sorolla spent five months in America and painted more than twenty portraits.

Book excerpt: Joaqu n Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) first achieved major international success with his painting Otra Margarita (Another Marguerite ) (1892), for which he received first prize at the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. This painting was also the first work by the Spanish artist to enter an American institution when it was donated to the Museum of Fine Arts (today the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum) at Washington University in St. Louis in 1894. Sorolla's fame in America grew; in 1909, more than 150,000 visitors attended an exhibition of Sorolla's art at The Hispanic Society of America in New York in 1909. Furthermore, the artist was invited to the White House to paint the portrait of President William Howard Taft. The landmark exhibition of 1909 was followed two years later by another major show of more than 150 of his paintings held at the Art Institute of Chicago and the St. Louis Art Museum. Sorolla and America explores the artist's relationship with early twentieth century America through the lens of those who commissioned him, those who collected his works, and those artists, such as John Singer Sargent and William Merritt Chase, with whom Sorolla closely associated. Particular attention is dedicated to the artist's association with The Hispanic Society of America and with key figures like Archer Milton Huntington and Thomas Fortune Ryan

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new survey of the best works by the elusive and spectacular Spanish Impressionist Joaquín Sorolla. Often compared to his contemporary, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923) was a master draftsman and painter of landscapes, formal portraits, and monumental, historically themed canvases. Highly influenced by French Impressionism, the Valencian artist was a master plein-air painter known for his luminous seaside scenes of frolicking youths and for vivid depictions of Spanish rural life and its pleasures and customs. This beautifully designed and produced volume brings together one hundred of Sorolla’s major paintings, selected by his great-granddaughter Blanca Pons-Sorolla, the foremost authority on the artist. Benefiting from close proximity to the artist and his personal archives, she presents an in-depth essay that explores Sorolla’s life, work, and remarkable international legacy. With virtually all of the artist’s previous publications now out of print, this much-anticipated volume is an important addition to the literature on this great Spanish master.
