Book excerpt: Sonny the Puppy Dog is waiting for his best friend Little Duke to show up. Little Duke lives in the north and comes and visits his grandparents every summer. Little Duke's grandpa and grandma are the owner of Sonny the Puppy Dog. But because Little Duke calls them Grandpa and Grandma, so does Sonny when he barks at them to tell them something. Little Duke and Sonny go and visit Old Man Jack. He is a good friend also. Old Man Jack is always helping hurt animals. Today Old Man Jack had found a hurt baby owl. It had a hurt wing. So everyone went to the wildlife center together. And there the baby owl got help. Sonny went and looked around the center. Wow! Looks like there are so many different animals. And there were a lot of raccoons, turtles, baby deer, and a lot more. Some would live here at the center, and some would be let back out into the wild when they healed and got bigger. But Sonny saw the pony. The pony had a bad leg. He walked with a limp. Sonny went to see the pony. Sonny found out the pony did not like the name the caregivers had given him, Clyde. Sonny told Clyde his name meant "big and strong." Sonny and Clyde became best of friends.

Book excerpt: In the fall of 1966, in the mountain town of Boone, North Carolina, three teens wrestle with what life will hold after graduation. Each with baggage out casting them from the rest of the town, the three rely on each other for support. Amber, the orphaned daughter of a tarnished woman, Curtis, a mentally handicapped teen with severe social disorders and Sonny, the son of the town alcoholic. Amber and Sonny are in love and both protect Curtis to a fault. The trio form an unbreakable bond inside their own little bubble. Sonny is the strength that binds them together, but when events happen that force him to enlist in the Army, he is pulled from the group and sent to fight the war in Vietnam. Returning to Boone years later, Sonny, now mentally and physically broken from his experiences in the war finds that things have changed. Having lost touch with everyone, Sonny finds that Amber has moved on to an abusive relationship, Curtis’ mental health have spiraled out of control, and that his own father is struggling with health issues. Sonny is determined to get his life back in order and help the ones that he left behind years ago. Working through his own demons, Sonny is once again immersed into a toxic small town where everyone is a little bit broken. He finds that his need to help Curtis has not waned, nor his love for Amber. Wanting nothing more than to fulfill a promise made years before, Sonny struggles with life after the war, while still dealing with the war at home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about teaching writing and the gritty particulars of teaching adolescents. But it is also the planning, the thinking, the writing, the journey: all I've been putting into my teaching for the last two decades. This is the book I wanted when I was first given ninth graders and a list of novels to teach. This is a book of vision and hope and joy, but it is also a book of genre units and minilessons and actual conferences with students. -Penny Kittle What makes the single biggest difference to student writers? When the invisible machinery of your writing processes is made visible to them. Write Beside Them shows you how to do it. It's the comprehensive book and companion video that English/language arts teachers need to ensure that teens improve their writing. Across genres, Penny Kittle presents a flexible framework for instruction, the theory and experience to back it up, and detailed teaching information to help you implement it right away. Each section of Write Beside Them describes a specific element of Penny's workshop: Daily writing practice: writer's notebooks and quick writes Instructional frameworks: minilessons, organization, conferring, and sharing drafts Genre work: narrative, persuasion, and writing in multiple genres Skills work: grammar, punctuation, and style Assessment: evaluation, feedback, portfolios, and grading All along the way, Penny demonstrates minilessons that respond to students' immediate needs, and her Student Focus sections profile and spotlight how individual writers grew and changed over the course of her workshop. In addition, Write Beside Them provides a study guide, reproducibles, writing samples from Penny and her students, suggestions for nurturing your own writing life, and a helpful FAQ. Best of all, the online videos take you right inside Penny's classroom, explicitly modeling how to make the process of writing accessible to all kids. Penny Kittle's active coaching and can-do attitude alone will energize your teaching and inspire you to write with your students. But her strategies, expert advice, and compelling in-class video footage will help you turn inspiration into great teaching. Read Write Beside Them and discover that the most important influence for all young writers is their teacher. Penny was the recipient of the 2009 NCTE Britton Award for Write Beside Them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tiki torches, cocktails, la dolce vita, and the music that popularized them—Mondo Exotica offers a behind-the-scenes look at the sounds and obsessions of the Space Age and Cold War period as well as the renewed interest in them evident in contemporary music and design. The music journalist and radio host Francesco Adinolfi provides extraordinary detail about artists, songs, albums, and soundtracks, while also presenting an incisive analysis of the ethnic and cultural stereotypes embodied in exotica and related genres. In this encyclopedic account of films, books, TV programs, mixed drinks, and above all music, he balances a respect for exotica’s artistic innovations with a critical assessment of what its popularity says about postwar society in the United States and Europe, and what its revival implies today. Adinolfi interviewed a number of exotica greats, and Mondo Exotica incorporates material from his interviews with Martin Denny, Esquivel, the Italian film composers Piero Piccioni and Piero Umiliani, and others. It begins with an extended look at the postwar popularity of exotica in the United States. Adinolfi describes how American bachelors and suburbanites embraced the Polynesian god Tiki as a symbol of escape and sexual liberation; how Les Baxter’s album Ritual of the Savage (1951) ushered in the exotica music craze; and how Martin Denny’s Exotica built on that craze, hitting number one in 1957. Adinolfi chronicles the popularity of performers from Yma Sumac, “the Peruvian Nightingale,” to Esquivel, who was described by Variety as “the Mexican Duke Ellington,” to the chanteuses Eartha Kitt, Julie London, and Ann-Margret. He explores exotica’s many sub-genres, including mood music, crime jazz, and spy music. Turning to Italy, he reconstructs the postwar years of la dolce vita, explaining how budget spy films, spaghetti westerns, soft-core porn movies, and other genres demonstrated an attraction to the foreign. Mondo Exotica includes a discography of albums, compilations, and remixes.

Book excerpt: Autobiography of jazz elder statesman Frank “Doc” Adams, highlighting his role in Birmingham, Alabama’s, historic jazz scene and tracing his personal adventure that parallels, in many ways, the story and spirit of jazz itself. Doc tells the story of an accomplished jazz master, from his musical apprenticeship under John T. “Fess” Whatley and his time touring with Sun Ra and Duke Ellington to his own inspiring work as an educator and bandleader. Central to this narrative is the often-overlooked story of Birmingham’s unique jazz tradition and community. From the very beginnings of jazz, Birmingham was home to an active network of jazz practitioners and a remarkable system of jazz apprenticeship rooted in the city’s segregated schools. Birmingham musicians spread across the country to populate the sidelines of the nation’s bestknown bands. Local musicians, like Erskine Hawkins and members of his celebrated orchestra, returned home heroes. Frank “Doc” Adams explores, through first-hand experience, the history of this community, introducing readers to a large and colorful cast of characters—including “Fess” Whatley, the legendary “maker of musicians” who trained legions of Birmingham players and made a significant mark on the larger history of jazz. Adams’s interactions with the young Sun Ra, meanwhile, reveal life-changing lessons from one of American music’s most innovative personalities. Along the way, Adams reflects on his notable family, including his father, Oscar, editor of the Birmingham Reporter and an outspoken civic leader in the African American community, and Adams’s brother, Oscar Jr., who would become Alabama’s first black supreme court justice. Adams’s story offers a valuable window into the world of Birmingham’s black middle class in the days before the civil rights movement and integration. Throughout, Adams demonstrates the ways in which jazz professionalism became a source of pride within this community, and he offers his thoughts on the continued relevance of jazz education in the twenty-first century.
