Is too late in the day to set up Epicurus on the throne of Plato, however the advocates of our monkey-brotherhood may delight themselves, and amuse a few gaping people, by turning things outside in and upside down for a season. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs of the Christian Life Tms book is intended to give inspiration and expression to the larger and richer conceptions of the Christian life now prevailing. It seeks to kindle hope, arouse courage, and stimulate noble purposes. It aims to develop trust and joy, devotion to duty and unselfish service, filial love to God and fraternal love to man. The hymns have been selected because of real poetic merit, and because they breathe a spirit of genuine experience and practical service. While the number is limited, every phase of Christian worship and life is sufficiently covered. Hymns of aspiration, of character, of con duct, of the home, of devotion to the common weal, of effort to secure a kingdom of heaven on earth, of the new spirit of brotherhood are here. Christ is given the central place. Not only is his earthly career fully illustrated, but groups of hymns present him as the Eternal Friend, the Good Shepherd, the Rock of Ages, the Master and the Light of the World. Hymns of the church are here, and especially of its missionary activities, issuing in The Triumphant Kingdom. Christian optimism finds voice in these hymns. Since patriotism is a part of religion an unusual number of national hymns is brought together here. The tunes have been chosen with like care, that the best hymns may be matched with music of the finest quality. The first aim has beenito secure singable tunes, such as congregations will delight to sing tunes with a haunting melody, and such as fit the words. The second aim has been to have music of such excellence in harmony and construction as to be attractive to trained musicians as well as others. The old, familiar tunes are here, as well as those of the latest and best modern composers. Sixty percent of the tunes are already either old or new favorites, and it is hoped that many of the others will speedily become such. It is believed that every tune in these pages, under competent leadership, may be readily learned by any congregation. The great Canticles which the Church has used for centuries are here set to the best music of ancient and modern composers. It is hoped that a much larger use of this form of worship song may be made. With a little practice whole congregations can easily learn to chant under a competent director. It is most true of a goodly collection of gospel songs. The book which we are introducing with this opening word has two great advantages over many of its kind. In the first place, it is official: issued by the Western Methodist Book Concern, one of the official publishing-houses of our great Church. It may be presumed that great care has been exercised in the selection of its contents, having in mind the proper teaching which the Church should indorse. Second, it is edited by a man well known in the world of gospel songs. A glance at the contents will show his skill and excellent taste. Prof. J. M. Black is the only one of many song writers and composers who was selected as amember of the Joint Commission to produce the official Methodist Hymnal recently published. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs for the New Life: Designed for Public, Social and Private Christian Uses This volume is the fruit of a long-cherished desire to help the masses in the use, and real enjoyment and blessing of Sacred Song, not only in the Lord's house, but in their homes, and on all Christian occasions. Hence the tunes on these pages have been selected mainly for their singing qualities, and for their adaptation to the themes of song herein contained. It is believed that they are such as will render the song service in the great congregation at once inviting and effective, while those which have more special adaptation to home and social singing, will greatly enhance the pleasure and profit of song in these departments. Extremes have been avoided. Even the new tunes will be readily learned, and, we think, generally liked for their melodious character. But in writing this little book I hope that a money consideration has had noth ing to do with it. My object has been to ben efit mankind and for the comfort of all Chris tians, that they might become more interested in the spiritual life, and be less wrapped up in the things of the world. But there is a way in which I feel that I have been compensated already, and that is by the strengthening and comforting of my own mind in the consideration of God's love and care for His people. It has helped much in passing my remnant of days, and it occurred to me that if these things were comforting to me they might be to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Life and the Story of the Gospel Hymns: And of Sacred Songs and Solos The deep interest I have always taken in the subject of hymnology, and my warm personal affection for the author of this volume, are my warrant for be speaking for it a warm and hearty welcome. If ever a man was raised and endowed for a special work by our Divine Master, that man is Ira D. Sankey. His work has been of a twofold character. Before his day psalms and hymns and spiritual songs had always been an important part of the services of religious worship throughout Christendom. But he introduced a peculiar style of popular hymns which are calculated to awaken the careless, to melt the hardened, and to guide inquiring souls to the Lord Jesus Christ. In the next place, he sang these powerful revival-hymns himself, and became as effective a preacher of the gospel of salvation by song as his associate, Dwight L.Moody, was by sermon. The multitudes who heard his rich and inspiring voice in "The Ninety and Nine," "Jesus of Nazareth Passeth By" and "When the Mists Have Rolled Away" will testify to the prodigious power with which the Holy Spirit gave him utterance. While he has had many successors, he was the pioneer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Interpretations of Life and Religion Hebrew songs strike at the roots Of things. The most recent of them were written at least twenty-four centuries ago, yet they are as fresh and vital as if they were penned yesterday. They are the utterances of men who were neither philosophers nor theologians nor saints; yet they lay bare the inmost springs Of life, they supply facts and experiences that are built into the foundation-walls Of Christian theology, they have been woven into the hymns and prayers Of nineteen centuries Of Christian history. The secret Of their vitality and power lies in the fact that they are frank, genuine words, wrung from men who glanced keenly into the depths and heights of their life, and discerned the eternal facts that formed the background from. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth in Song: For the Lovers of Truth Everywhere The issuing of this small collection of Gospel Songs is an attempt to meet the needs of a rapidly growing number of Christian people who read in Christ's teachings a design, broad enough to cover all conditions and races of men, together with their ultimate redemption. Believing that He taught Truth for all ages, they recognize in Matt. 10: 7, 8 a command for to'day, which carries within itself the power for specific verification. To them the religion of Jesus Christ is free, untrammelled by sect or creed; a religion of joy, of peace and harmony. The dearth of Gospel Songs bearing directly upon these vital themes has necessitated an unusually frequent appearance of the Editor's name as musical composer. Appropriate hymns are more easily obtained, and the list of contributors in this department is a generous one, many of the words having been written expressly for this work. A few of the dear old standard hymns have been included, which will be newly read in the light of advancing Truth. Attention is called to selections appropriate for Sunday School work, and also to a few short pieces especially designed for Healing Services, the word-subjects for which have been most kindly furnished by successful teachers whose names are widely known.
