Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan (1882) is a collection of poems by Toru Dutt. Compiled after her death and published in London, Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan is an invaluable work of art from a pioneering figure in Indian history and Bengali literature. Born in Calcutta to a family of Bengali Christians, Toru Dutt was raised at the crossroads of English and Indian cultures. In addition to her native Bengali, she became fluent in English, French, and Sanskrit as a young girl, eventually writing novels and poems in each language. Despite her limited body of work, Dutt’s legacy as a groundbreaking writer remains firm in India and around the world. “Savitri was the only child / Of Madra's wise and mighty king; / Stern warriors, when they saw her, smiled, / As mountains smile to see the spring.” In rhyming English verse, Bengali poet Toru Dutt presents some of the oldest and most sacred stories from ancient India. Translated from Sanskrit into the popular ballad form, Dutt introduces an English audience to the story of Savitri, originally from the epic Mahabharata, as well as the tale of Lakshman, which comes from the Hindu epic Ramayana. Alongside these poems appear Dutt’s versions of Bengali folklore—“Joghadhya Uma”—and poems written during her stay in Europe. “Near Hastings” is a particularly beautiful example of her original verse depicting an otherworldly encounter along the English seacoast: “Near Hastings, on the shingle-beach, / We loitered at the time / When ripens on the wall the peach, / The autumn's lovely prime.” With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Toru Dutt’s Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan is a classic work of Bengali literature reimagined for modern readers.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends, Ballads, and Songs of the Lee If welcome, then, to our own fireside, how thrilling to the heart of the exile must be the chronicles of home, if pining on the arid sands of India, or snowed up in a log-cabin through the long American winter, when the events of the Beautiful City and the legends of her sparkling river are brought before his vision; causing, at one moment, the merry ringing laugh at some quaint remembrance, or the silent tear of regret when he thinks, mayhap, of his distant home and the moss grown graveyard, where rest the bones of his venerated ancestors. If this little volume has accomplished but one-half the foregoing, what its writer sincerely wishes, he is repaid, and its mission is fulfilled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legends, Ballads, and Songs of the Lee A good many of the Poems in this volume have already appeared before the public, in the local, metropolitan, and American journals, mostly with my own name attached, but in many instances with my peculiar nom de plume, and, I am happy to say, have been more than favorably received; yet, if the reader is not perfectly satisfied with them, he must take into consideration that they were written under peculiar disadvantages, namely, at the work-bench of an artizan, without time for that careful pruning which might make them more acceptable, and which other and better Poets enjoy. Working on my own account, and living by my trade, I could not much care for "invoking the Musesand, perhaps, they in revenge have had nothing to do with my Poems. There are one or two pieces inserted, which were written to please others, which do not quite express my natural sentiments. I will leave the reader to judge from the general character of all which are the Poems in question. I also beg to assure the public, that nothing was farther from my intention than to offend the prejudices of any creed or class. I am an enemy to injustice in any station of life, and have opposed it, and will do so, to the best of my humble ability. I have sought to mingle information with amusement in portraying the events of my native Cork as they actually occur, without any of the caricature persisted in by some writers. Excerpt: ... ballads, songs, and legends. the lay of njal the viking. A norse legend. The spring moon looked on our open sails As westward away we bore, And dim in its light paled the rocky face Of the gray-browed Nordland shore. The spectre of midnight wrapped our barque For we heard his iow-breathed moan, And like to a cloud, on the shining deck, Our Viking walked alone. He had laid aside the glittering spear, Which led on our battle path; And his loosened armour creaked like the wind That circles the demon's rath. We knew that a gloom rested on his brow, As he paced thus silently; We knew that his bosom was seething wild, As the breakers on the sea. For Gundolf the seer had read him his fate, By the far off hills of snow; And the prophet's words, by our monarch's looks, Were brimmed with a coming woe. The white stars arose, and in azure sank, Full many a time again, And still we wandered away, away, Over the green-lipped main; Till at length we saw, on the far sea-rim, The dark beach of Inisfail, And our banner fluttered in warlike joy As we rushed from the ocean gale. We brightened our blades, our armour donned, And thought of the kine and gold That our fathers won with their purple blood On that rugged coast of old. Then down to our bark came a minstrel hoar, With hair like the wild swan's wing---" The chieftain, my master, has bid me ask, What bringeth thee here, 0 king? u If your words speak peace, he has rest to giveFood, wassail, and song has he: If you come in war, he hath shining spears And a deadly grasp for thee." Thus answered our monarch: "Go, tell your chief, I want neither food nor rest; But I want fair Una, the golden haired, The maid with the snowy brea
