Book excerpt: The Song of Songs, also known as the Song of Solomon (Hebrew: שִׁיר הַשִּׁירִים) is one of the Megillot (scrolls) of the Ketuvim (the "Writings", the last section of the Tanakh or Hebrew Bible). In modern Judaism, the Song is read on the Sabbath during the Passover, which marks the beginning of the grain harvest as well as commemorating the Exodus from Egypt. Jewish tradition reads it as an allegory of the relationship between G-d and Israel. This booklet is great for individuals who have trouble with pronouncing Hebrew words. The text was developed in a way to produce a rhythmic flow, while allowing the reader to pronounce each letter, word and vowel with great ease in your native language.

Book excerpt: Imagine a great symphony orchestra made up of every possible kind of musical instrument, each one playing its part, all together creating the most beautiful symphony, under the direction of a master conductor. The entirety of creation is this symphony orchestra wherein each creature plays its song before the Holy One blessed-be-He, and Man is the conductor. For as every creature plays its song, Man ג€“ who includes all their distinct powers within himself ג€“ binds them together into a single wondrous symphonic sound, one great harmonious praise to the Creator of the world. This is the greatness of Perek Shirah, and this is why it is so important to say it and to immerse oneself in it every day, and to add personal requests at its conclusion. Yes, it is best to say it every day in its entirety, including the introductory and concluding paragraphs that accompany it. It can be said during the day or the night, but it is especially powerful in the morning. In this way, Perek Shirah is a special segulah (prescription) for livelihood, healing, protection from all harm, and child bearing.

Book excerpt: The sheer number of Jewish laws infuses everyday life with endless opportunities to touch the divine within. With this modern translation, the English-reading public can imbibe the holy ways of Jewish law as taught by Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi, the Alter Rebbe, from the original source. In these volumes, the translation faces the newly reset Hebrew text. Notations appear when the Alter Rebbe's rulings are at variance with Rabbi Yosef Cairo's Shulchan Aruch and when other halachic works cite the subject at hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to traditional narratives of assimilation, in the bargain made for an American identity, Jews freely surrendered Yiddish language and culture. Or did they? Recovering "Yiddishland" seeks to “return” readers to a threshold where Americanization also meant ambivalence and resistance. It reconstructs “Yiddishland” as a cultural space produced by Yiddish immigrant writers from the 1890s through the 1930s, largely within the sphere of New York. Rejecting conventional literary history, the book spotlights “threshold texts” in the unjustly forgotten literary project of these writers—texts that reveal unexpected and illuminating critiques of Americanization. Merle Lyn Bachman takes a fresh look at Abraham Cahan’s Yekl and Anzia Yezierska’s Hungry Hearts, tracing in them a re-inscription of the Yiddish world that various characters seem to be committed to leaving behind. She also translates for the first time Yiddish poems featuring African-Americans that reflect the writers’ confrontation with their passage, as Jews, into “white” identities. Finally, Bachman discusses the modernist poet Mikhl Likht, whose simultaneous embrace of American literature and resistance to assimilating into English marked him as the supreme “threshold” poet. Conscious of the risks of any postmodern—“post-assimilation”—attempt to recover the past, Bachman invents the figure of “the Yiddish student,” whose comments can reflect—and keep in check—the nostalgia and naivete of the returnee to Yiddish.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For centuries, poets have turned to translation for creative inspiration. Through and in translation, poets have introduced new poetic styles, languages, and forms into their own writing, sometimes changing the course of literary history in the process. Strange Cocktail is the first comprehensive study of this phenomenon in modern Hebrew literature of the late nineteenth century to the present day. Its chapters on Esther Raab, Leah Goldberg, Avot Yeshurun, and Harold Schimmel offer close readings that examine the distinct poetics of translation that emerge from reciprocal practices of writing and translating. Working in a minor literary vernacular, the translation strategies that these poets employed allowed them to create and participate in transnational and multilingual poetic networks. Strange Cocktail thereby advances a comparative and multilingual reframing of modern Hebrew literature that considers how canons change and are undone when translation occupies a central position—how lines of influence and affiliation are redrawn and literary historiographies are revised when the work of translation occupies the same status as an original text, when translating and writing go hand in hand.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking 2007 volume gathers an international team of historians to present the practice of translation as part of cultural history. Although translation is central to the transmission of ideas, the history of translation has generally been neglected by historians, who have left it to specialists in literature and language. This book seeks to achieve an understanding of the contribution of translation to the spread of information in early modern Europe. It focuses on non-fiction: the translation of books on religion, history, politics and especially on science, or 'natural philosophy', as it was generally known at this time. The chapters cover a wide range of languages, including Latin, Greek, Russian, Turkish and Chinese. The book will appeal to scholars and students of the early modern and later periods, to historians of science and of religion, as well as to anyone interested in translation studies.
