Book Synopsis Beethoven's Piano Sonatas by : Charles Rosen
Download or read book Beethoven's Piano Sonatas written by Charles Rosen and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-01 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beethoven’s piano sonatas form one of the most important collections of works in the whole history of music. Spanning several decades of his life as a composer, the sonatas soon came to be seen as the first body of substantial serious works for piano suited to performance in large concert halls seating hundreds of people. In this comprehensive and authoritative guide, Charles Rosen places the works in context and provides an understanding of the formal principles involved in interpreting and performing this unique repertoire, covering such aspects as sonata form, phrasing, and tempo, as well as the use of pedal and trills. In the second part of his book, he looks at the sonatas individually, from the earliest works of the 1790s through the sonatas of Beethoven’s youthful popularity of the early 1800s, the subsequent years of mastery, the years of stress (1812†“1817), and the last three sonatas of the 1820s. Composed as much for private music-making as public recital, Beethoven’s sonatas have long formed a bridge between the worlds of the salon and the concert hall. For today’s audience, Rosen has written a guide that brings out the gravity, passion, and humor of these works and will enrich the appreciation of a wide range of readers, whether listeners, amateur musicians, or professional pianists. The book includes a CD of Rosen performing extracts from several of the sonatas, illustrating points made in the text.
Download or read book Bach written by David Schulenberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bach has remained a figure of continuous fascination and interest to scholars and readers since the original Master Musicians Bach volume's publication in 1983 - even since its revision in 2000, understanding of Bach and his music's historical and cultural context has shifted substantially. Reflecting new biographical information that has only emerged in recent decades, author David Schulenberg contributes to an ongoing scholarly conversation about Bach with clarity and concision. Bach traces the man's emergence as a startlingly original organist and composer, describing his creative evolution, professional career, and family life from contemporary societal and cultural perspectives in early modern Europe. His experiences as student, music director, and teacher are examined alongside the music he produced in each of these roles, including early compositions for keyboard instruments, the great organ and harpsichord works of later years, vocal music, and other famous instrumental works, including the Brandenburg Concertos. Schulenberg also illuminates how Bach incorporated his contemporary environment into his work: he responded to music by other composers, to his audiences and employment conditions, and to developments in poetry, theology, and even the sciences. The author focuses on Bach's evolution as a composer by ultimately recognizing "Bach's world" in the specific cities, courts, and environments within and for which he composed. Dispensing with biographical minutiae and more closely examining the interplay between his life and his music, Bach presents a unique, grounded, and refreshing new framing of a brilliant composer.

Book Synopsis The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer, Biber, Muffat and their Contemporaries by : Charles E. Brewer
Download or read book The Instrumental Music of Schmeltzer, Biber, Muffat and their Contemporaries written by Charles E. Brewer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on primary sources, many of which have never been published or examined in detail, this book examines the music of the late seventeenth-century composers, Biber, Schmeltzer and Muffat, and the compositions preserved in the extensive Moravian archives in Kromeriz. These works have never before been fully examined in the cultural and conceptual contexts of their time. Charles E. Brewer sets these composers and their music within a framework that first examines the basic Baroque concepts of instrumental style, and then provides a context for the specific works. The dances of Schmeltzer, for example, functioned both as incidental music in Viennese operas and as music for elaborate court pantomimes and balls. These same cultural practices also account for some of Biber's most programmatic music, which accompanied similar entertainments in Kromeriz and Salzburg. The many sonatas by these composers have also been misunderstood by not being placed in a context where it was normal to be entertained in church and edified in court. Many of the works discussed here remain unpublished but have, in recent years, been recorded. This book enhances our understanding and appreciation of these recordings by providing an analysis of the context in which the works were first performed.

Book Synopsis Domenico Scarlatti - 26 Sonatas for Solo Guitar by : Rafael Guerrero Verdugo
Download or read book Domenico Scarlatti - 26 Sonatas for Solo Guitar written by Rafael Guerrero Verdugo and published by Rafael Guerrero Verdugo. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Domenico Scarlatti did not write a single piece of music for guitar, from his almost six hundred sonatas for harpsichord that have come down to us, more than two hundred have been transcribed for solo guitar over the last century, which probably converts the Neapolitan genius in the most transcribed author in the history of the guitar, in terms of number of pieces. Nowadays there are still many gems to discover inside the Scarlattian treasure, and this new collection intends to continue expanding the repertoire from Scarlatti adapted for guitar, searching among all the untranscribed sonatas. So, the most of the pieces from this book are unique transcriptions. The transcriptions are fully fingered, to ease the student’s work. Contains the sonatas: K26, K35, K45, K49, K97, K121, K141, K160, K189, K230, K234, K258, K281, K287, K294, K295, K298, K306, K311, K315, K351, K360, K418, K420, K425, K435.
