Book excerpt: Welcome to Eureka, Colorado, a small town with a big heart--and a cast of characters as homespun as their community and as beloved as family... With preparations for the annual Founder's Day pageant underway, Eureka is bustling with activity when bank teller Shelly Frazier's sister shows up with a reporter in tow. Shelly has a past no one in Eureka knows about, except her husband Charlie--and she's not eager to share it now that she's made a whole new life for herself as a wife, mother, and enthusiastic volunteer for the local historical society. That said, if anyone is going to tell the story of her days as a media darling, it will be Shelly herself. But she's not the only one wrestling with questions or looking for answers... While a private investigator is looking for clues to the whereabouts of the swindler mayor Lucille used to date, Maggie Clark is wondering if new husband Jameso is really ready for a lifetime commitment. And Cassie Wynock is all-too-willing to share her family's history with the wider world. Soon enough, the entire town of Eureka will also have to face its past--caverns, ghosts, and all--to understand where the future is going to take them...

Book excerpt: Soon the dust settled in Caleb’s life. Spring came on with all its brightness, freshness and beauty. Plants and flowers blossomed. The grass was green and ripe for baseball. Caleb was now approaching eight and longed to play on a little league team. Grams could make ends meet with the money entrusted to her in the will, but extras were always hard to fit into the budget. Little League costs were not cheap. There was a league starting at the local park and Caleb begged to be a part of it. Grams thought this over and worked out a deal with Caleb. The fee would be paid, but Caleb would work off the other expenses by cutting grass, garbage duty and other chores that could be found. Yeah, it was agreed! Caleb was ecstatic and took time to prepare himself. All the time spent watching and learning this game would soon pay off. He could almost hear his name being called on the roster and a fly ball being hit to left field. The roar of the crowds as he rounded third base for home lifted him to a new high.

Book excerpt: A daring young woman will risk her life to find her destiny in this atmospheric, beautifully drawn historical debut novel—a tale of love, hope, and danger set during the First World War. Lady Elizabeth Neville-Ashford wants to travel the world, pursue a career, and marry for love. But in 1914, the stifling restrictions of aristocratic British society and her mother’s rigid expectations forbid Lilly from following her heart. When war breaks out, the spirited young woman seizes her chance for independence. Defying her parents, she moves to London and eventually becomes an ambulance driver in the newly formed Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps—an exciting and treacherous job that takes her close to the Western Front. Assigned to a field hospital in France, Lilly is reunited with Robert Fraser, her dear brother Edward’s best friend. The handsome Scottish surgeon has always encouraged Lilly’s dreams. She doesn’t care that Robbie grew up in poverty—she yearns for their friendly affection to become something more. Lily is the most beautiful—and forbidden—woman Robbie has ever known. Fearful for her life, he’s determined to keep her safe, even if it means breaking her heart. In a world divided by class, filled with uncertainty and death, can their hope for love survive. . . or will it become another casualty of this tragic war? The paperback includes a P.S. section with additional insights from the author, background material, suggestions for further reading, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1963, in East Germany, They Divided the Sky tells the story of a young couple, living in the new, socialist, East Germany, whose relationship is tested to the extreme not only because of the political positions they gradually develop but, very concretely, by the Berlin Wall, which went up on August 13, 1961. The story is set in 1960 and 1961, a moment of high political cold war tension between the East Bloc and the West, a time when many thousands of people were leaving the young German Democratic Republic (the GDR) every day in order to seek better lives in West Germany, or escape the political ideology of the new country that promoted the "farmer and peasant" state over a state run by intellectuals or capitalists. The construction of the Wall put an end to this hemorrhaging of human capital, but separated families, friends, and lovers, for thirty years. The conflicts of the time permeate the relations between characters in the book at every level, and strongly affect the relationships that Rita, the protagonist, has not only with colleagues at work and at the teacher's college she attends, but also with her partner Manfred (an intellectual and academic) and his family. They also lead to an accident/attempted suicide that send her to hospital in a coma, and that provide the backdrop for the flashbacks that make up the narrative. Wolf's first full-length novel, published when she was thirty-five years old, was both a great literary success and a political scandal. Accused of having a 'decadent' attitude with regard to the new socialist Germany and deliberately misrepresenting the workers who are the foundation of this new state, Wolf survived a wave of political and other attacks after its publication. She went on to create a screenplay from the novel and participate in making the film version. More importantly, she went on to become the best-known East German writer of her generation, a writer who established an international reputation and never stopped working toward improving the socialist reality of the GDR.

When she learns that she is dying, Laura Spelman vows to spend her final year only on what matters most. As she quickly realizes, this means coming to terms with her most fruitful and important bonds—her “real connections”—all of which have been with women. From her tempestuous daughter and beloved aunt, to a promising lesbian writer she is mentoring and a cherished friend from her youth, Laura revisits her most significant relationships, each fraught with its own history and meaning. Insightful and witty, A Reckoning is an unforgettable portrait of one woman’s journey to seize life before it ends, and of the power in embracing the fact that the most challenging interactions are often the most rewarding. This ebook features an extended biography of May Sarton.

Book excerpt: Comedian and musician Reggie Watts shares his story of growing up in Montana as a biracial oddball struggling to navigate life, girls, drugs, and his own identity in America’s heartland—and having a blast doing it. Reggie Watts is weird. But you knew that. Anyone who’s seen his multifaceted, entirely improvised comedy and music shows knows that. Reggie Watts is also from the town of Great Falls, MT. These two facts are not unrelated. Watts grew up in Montana in the ‘80s, half French, half American, half white, half Black, speaking a bunch of different languages and slipping between the orchestra geeks and the football jocks until he finally found a squad of fellow misfits with an affinity for trouble. It was a wide-open time and place that invited freedom and exploration—as well as car theft and the not infrequent use of recreational cough syrup. And it helped him become the uniquely strange creative voice he is today. In Great Falls, MT, Watts takes us through his story, hitting on the culture shock he experienced after moving from Europe to the heart of America, where he was called racial slurs by neighbors but wasn’t Black enough for his father’s extended family. Where he fought with his authoritarian dad, built a new family of antiestablishment, post-punk oddballs—and ultimately knew he had to leave. But after Watts’s career exploded in Seattle and New York, ultimately scoring him a nightly place next to James Corden on The Late Late Show, he found himself drawn back to his hometown after the deaths of his parents. This is his love letter to the town that made him. But like love itself, it’s messy and complicated and dirty and beautiful—and as weird and wonderful as Watts himself.
