Book excerpt: This stunning middle grade historical fantasy adventure is a companion to the critically acclaimed A Crack in the Sea. Now in paperback. Putnam, the future king of Raftworld, wants more than anything to prove himself. When the water in the Second World starts to become salty and his father won't do anything about it, Putnam sees his chance. He steals a boat and sneaks off toward the source of the salty water. He doesn't know he has a stowaway onboard, an island girl named Artie. As the two face uncertainty and danger in their shared adventure, an extraordinary friendship forms. Meanwhile, a hundred years in the past, Rayel, princess of Raftworld, flees to southern waters, escaping an arranged marriage, and foiling a plot to kill her father. Told in alternating perspectives with Putnam and Artie traveling further and further into the uncharted southern sea--and Rayel, the key to the saltwater mystery, sailing the same sea in her own time--Putnam and Artie must put aside their differences and figure out why the sea is salty before it's too late.

Inupiaq word stems, suffixes, and endings can combine to form thousands of combinations, and each entry has an English translation. Many entries contain a verbal illustration in Inupiaq also translated into English. Every entry contains a morpheme by morpheme analysis. Of the dictionary s thirty-one appendices, twenty-four contain lists of terms from different categories, including: kin terms, ice and snow terms, temporal terms, names of constellations, ocean currents, and winds, area references, spatial terms, an explanation of the Inupiat counting system (also a list of cardinal and ordinal numbers), Inupiaq personal names, names of plants and animals (including mammals, insects, birds, fish, molluscs, and crustaceans), a list of exclamations, and names of the seasons/months. The other seven appendices are illustrations of an umiak, a kayak, a bowhead whale, a human skull, a human skeleton, and a traditional sod house. The various parts of each item are identified and named. "

Book excerpt: “Memoir that revels in glimmering snapshot impressions … subtle and intriguing … absurd comedy … hilarious” Foreword Clarion Reviews These are real memories. This volume has two parts. The first, The big, bad teacher, describes school teaching and private tuition in inner-city London (plus some memories of my own schooldays). The second, Doing violence to the fruit, describes my life in Greece. There is pathos, humour, compassion, irony, resignation. In my photos, the streets are bare. These are the streets I walked on. When I look at them now, I fill them with the people I knew. Reading Fragments, you may do the same…. There are plenty of expats. See Dead Dave and some lively English girls, a kissing consul and a smoking monk. You’ll meet my Greek neighbours, along with a pungent landlady. Join me and Bryan on the paths of Mt Athos, and even stay the night in a monastery or two. In London, you’ll find Monica. Help her put her pen back together, then watch us deal with her prying family. Yawn along with the parrot in my boring old lesson, and keep up with Kirin as he stays a step ahead of the awful Mummy. There are more rebellious kids – and a few impressionable ones, like Varahna the piranha and the sideways heart. From the author Fragments, anecdotes, random or loosely ordered, like memory. However much you want to, you can’t get the past back again. I’ve tried to do it here in lots of little ways.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of eighteen, Chad Rowan left his home in rural Hawai'i for Tokyo with visions of becoming a star athlete in Japan's national sport, sumo. But upon his arrival he was shocked less by the city crowds and the winter cold than by having to scrub toilets and answer to fifteen-year-olds who had preceded him at the sumo beya. Rowan spoke no Japanese. Of Japanese culture, he knew only what little his father, a former tour bus driver in Hawai'i, had been able to tell him as they drove to the airport. And he had never before set foot in a sumo ring. Five years later, against the backdrop of rising U.S.–Japan economic tension, Rowan became the first gaijin (non-Japanese) to advance to sumo's top rank, yokozuna. His historic promotion was more a cultural accomplishment than an athletic one, since yokozuna are expected to embody highly prized Japanese values such as hard work, patience, strength, and hinkaku, a special kind of dignity thought to be available only to Japanese. He was promoted ahead of his two main rivals, the brothers Koji and Masaru Hanada, who had been raised in the sumo beya run by their father, the former sumo great Takanohana I. Perhaps the defining moment of the gaijin's unique success occurred at the 1998 Nagano Olympics, when Rowan, chosen to personify "Japanese" to one of the largest television audiences in history, performed a sacred sumo ritual at the opening ceremony. Gaijin Yokozuna chronicles the events leading to that improbable scene at Nagano and beyond, tracing Rowan's life from his Hawai'i upbringing to his 2001 retirement ceremony. Along the way it briefly examines the careers of two Hawai'i-born sumotori who paved the way for Rowan, Jesse Kuhaulua (Takamiyama) and Salevaa Atisanoe (Konishiki). The author shares stories from family members, coaches, friends, fellow sumo competitors, and of course Rowan himself, whom he accompanied on three Japan-wide exhibition tours. The work is further informed by volumes of secondary source material on sumo, Japanese culture, and local Hawai'i culture.

Even as far back as the Mesozoic Era, before dinosaurs, you had the Permian Era.. An era that brought about the Synapsids (Reptiles with waterproof skin) hybrids, and many more unique colonized creatures. You had the clan of unique and powerful cats, and disastrous clan of hyenas, monkeys tribes, etc... These creatures were humanlike in every way, from compassionate to conning, brilliant to dimwitted, many very conniving and treacherous.(Just like many today) Tempted by power and the will to do anything to gain it, even kill.

Book excerpt: "[Savaş] writes with both sensuality and coolness, as if determined to find a rational explanation for the irrationality of existence..." -- The New York Times "I fell in love with this book." -- Katie Kitamura, author of A Separation A mesmerizing novel set in Paris and a changing Istanbul, about a young Turkish woman grappling with her past and her complicated relationship with a famous British writer. After her mother's death, Nunu moves from Istanbul to a small apartment in Paris. One day outside of a bookstore, she meets M., an older British writer whose novels about Istanbul Nunu has always admired. They find themselves walking the streets of Paris and talking late into the night. What follows is an unusual friendship of eccentric correspondence and long walks around the city. M. is working on a new novel set in Turkey and Nunu tells him about her family, hoping to impress and inspire him. She recounts the idyllic landscapes of her past, mythical family meals, and her elaborate childhood games. As she does so, she also begins to confront her mother's silence and anger, her father's death, and the growing unrest in Istanbul. Their intimacy deepens, so does Nunu's fear of revealing too much to M. and of giving too much of herself and her Istanbul away. Most of all, she fears that she will have to face her own guilt about her mother and the narratives she's told to protect herself from her memories. A wise and unguarded glimpse into a young woman's coming into her own, Walking on the Ceiling is about memory, the pleasure of invention, and those places, real and imagined, we can't escape.
