Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As seen through the eyes of Sam Venable, the world is indeed bizarre and filled with nuttiness. The archives of the Knoxville News Sentinel offer ample evidence that Venable is a bit of the former and has made a career out of drawing attention to the latter. For his latest book, Venable has gathered and organized 139 of his newspaper columns—his biggest collection yet—to create a trove of wit and wisdom. In the spirit of “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” he points a finger at human nature, the environment, civil rights and wrongs, and an eclectic mix of other targets, drawing our attention to the foibles, failings, and just plain absurdities that surround us all. As a native son and treasured institution in East Tennessee, Venable has earned the right to poke fun at its local history, habits, and happenings. He takes full, loving advantage of this license in essays such as “How to Tawlk Good,” “Shall We Gather with a Reptile,” and “The Good, the Bad, the Kudzu.” He takes on the government in a section titled “A Two-Ring Circus with Elephants and Donkeys,” and in another called “Still Waiting for Y2K,” he offers up “A Lesson in Dollars and Sense” and “Blowing the Budget for Bowser.” Some have called him a modern-day Mark Twain, others the Dave Barry of Knoxville; but while there may be some similarities, Sam Venable is wonderfully unique. He sees—and sees through—the pervasive silliness and stupidity in our world. It evokes wonder in him, and with many a deft turn of phrase, he interprets that wonder for us. Warning! This Product Contains Nuttiness will make you smile, certainly, but it will also make you think and sometimes even touch your heart.

Book excerpt: Gabriel and I have the possibility of a second chance. But it’s not one that I think I can take. I never dreamed of having a family. I never had a good one to begin with. I was a pawn, a toy, and all I ever dreamed of was having some power over my own life. My marriage to Dean Blackmoor, and the sons I’d give him, would have given me that. Now I’m pregnant, and alone—except for the Devil’s Son who wants to make me his. Who is willing to do anything to keep me, and has proven that, over and over again. When he finds out I’m going to have his baby, there’s no question in his mind that I’m going to keep it. Only in mine. No matter how much he argues, I can’t see a way forward for us. He’s a biker. He lives a rough and dangerous life, and I can’t see a place for me in it. Gabriel says he wants to learn how to love me the way I deserve. How to treat me like the princess I used to be. He wants the chance for the family neither of us ever had. And he’ll do anything to convince me it’s possible. First, all I wanted was power. Then revenge. But now? What if I want Gabriel—and the future we could have together? Loving Winter is the third installment in the Blackmoor Revenge series, featuring Winter and Gabriel. This is a DARK romance, and sensitive readers should be aware that there are no heroes or heroines in this story. This book contains material which may be difficult for some readers, and features characters that are damaged, and morally grey at best.

After the show, she meets Mo, an aspiring comic who’s everything Izzy’s not: bold, confident, comfortable in her skin. Mo invites Izzy to join her group of friends and introduces her to the Chicago open mic scene. The only problem? Her new friends are college students—and Izzy tells them she’s one, too. Now Izzy, the dutiful daughter and model student, is sneaking out to perform stand-up with her comedy friends. Her controlling boyfriend is getting suspicious, and her former best friend knows there’s something going on. But Izzy loves comedy and this newfound freedom. They throw the body into the canal and the girls flee to the Latin Quarter to hide with one of the Russian’s anarchist “comrades.” They do not realize they, too, are being watched. Their subsequent disappearance and the violent acts that follow will set Clarie Martin, a teacher, and mother of a toddler, and her husband, magistrate Bernard Martin (last seen in Cezanne's Quarry and The Blood of Lorraine) on a dangerous quest to rescue them from a vicious killer.

Book excerpt: The author has been a psychiatrist for thirty-nine years and has worked with thousands of patients. His impression is that many of their problems have to do with the way they process or deal with information. Often, maladaptive pathways of thinking are employed to the person's detriment. When this occurs, it tends to be repeated again and again and becomes habitual. Eventually, symptoms such as anxiety, depression, suicidal feelings and addiction are generated and become more and more problematic. In the author's experience, this can be interrupted by mentally training oneself to only travel down adaptive pathways of thinking. With this approach, old pathways of thinking are abandoned. There are a number of techniques that can be employed to establish and reinforce newer adaptive pathways of thinking. It's not for everybody and should not be used exclusively, but first and foremost among techniques is mindfulness. The author has seen it work again and again. Introduced to the world by Buddha for the purpose of enlightenment, nowadays it is used for mental health issues. The mindfulness here is different from the type taught in DBT. The author is not saying that DBT mindfulness doesn't work; it's just that he has seen better outcomes with the type he teaches. He learned the basics of it at IMS at Barre, Massachusetts, during various meditation retreats. Modern psychology does not address the invisible spiritual worlds that interface with the physical world. According to religious teachings, these worlds really exist and forces from them can influence our thinking. Reportedly, an archangel rebelled against God and was booted out of heaven. A third of the angels went down with him to earth. They seek to have us act in such a way so that when we die, they can claim our souls and torture us in hell. The present work at least addresses this issue. Likewise, energy medicine is discussed briefly.

Book excerpt: The satirical novel Slightly Fissured Statues by Romanian writerGeorge Rizescu is an amazing book that unveils the inner political life of the Parliament in Bucharest an reveals truths that are difficult to imagine about party activities, manipulations and irresponsible acts. This is what literary critic Aureliu Goci tells us about this captivating book: Narrative Performance and Excellence of Fun Mr. George Rizescu’s comic work is a conscious way of comic sources reevaluation, in modern and postmodern forms. His latest two books, “Short Treatise on Bollocksology” and “Slightly Fissured Statues,” represent his complete and complex textual contribution to deciphering and exploring the humorous formulas produced by an increasingly ridiculous and comic society, as—it seems—it loses its sense of humor at the level of consciousness. This last sense is based on degradation of the other senses in the endowment of the human being. The humor of exaggerated communication that George Rizescu’s prose introduces is one of the most appropriate and synchronous scriptural expressions in the spirit of the contemporary civilization. Surely, earlier, we were aware of the Hamletian “world rocking” at the beginning of the millennium, world still under the terror of a glorious, apocalyptic end that was supposed to crown festively the past millennium and the high-profile year 2000, of course long-awaited for 2000 years (according to some, awaited even for a longer time). The sober, methodical, academic attitude of the author—who became an important comic writer of our time—could only lead to a representative creation of contemporary times and the discovery of a first-class and high significance writer at a time when the image is still trying to detract the text… and, behold, it can’t! Mr. George Rizescu, profound comic contemporary author, created a fully personalized expressive territoriality, supported by a consistent work in the true sense of the word. Through his writing, he can’t be snatched from the center of the contemporary comic universe because he remains tucked into the place by the heavy anchors represented by his novels, starting with the “Salvache1…” cycle and continuing with the “Treatise on Bollocksology” and “Slightly Fissured Statues.” The author, of course, a chronicler of his time, represents for us, in this last book a fabulous “history” of events and characters that mark a period in a determined space. “History” is a nineteenth century concept that on the one hand records and defines documentarily, chronologically and coherently time and space, and—on the other hand, it’s an imaginary construction, an invented but credible story, a fictional subtext with diffuse didactic motivations and moral ends. “History” is recorded and explained in order to be a model, either positive or negative, so as not to repeat itself. [...] We can say that Mr. George Rizescu performs, in the unitary and coherent series of his novels, a post-revolutionary epic of the new Romanian capitalism. Aureliu Goci

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gowan shows some of the diverse ways that men on the street in San Francisco struggle for survival, autonomy, and self-respect. Living for weeks at a time among homeless men--working side-by-side with them as they collected cans, bottles, and scrap metal; helping them set up camp; watching and listening as they panhandled and hawked newspapers; and accompanying them into soup kitchens, jails, welfare offices, and shelters--Gowan immersed herself in their routines, their personal stories, and their perspectives on life on the streets. She observes a wide range of survival techniques, from the illicit to the industrious, from drug dealing to dumpster diving. She also discovered that prevailing discussions about homelessness and its causes--homelessness as pathology, homelessness as moral failure, and homelessness as systemic failure--powerfully affect how homeless people see themselves and their ability to change their situation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Preface: “I wrote these stories between 1992 and 2018. They cover a dozen different sports for a dozen different media outlets, from the Ann Arbor News to National Public Radio, and they stretch from a couple pages to a dozen. But they have one thing in common: they all meant a lot to me when I wrote them, and they still do today.” The Best of Bacon presents both new and familiar stories by best-selling author John U. Bacon, all centered on sports in his home state of Michigan. Best known for his acclaimed books on college football, Bacon’s writing has been praised for going beyond traditional Xs and Os sports reporting. True to that reputation, this collection showcases personal, behind-the-scenes stories of players, coaches, and even fans. Many of these stories are connected to specific moments in time—a great season, the passing of a legendary broadcaster, or a star player’s daily grind before a big game—and will immediately transport readers to some of the highs (and lows) of their own sports memories. More often, Bacon’s writing explores timeless themes—why we love sports, how we pass that passion down to the next generation, and how it will be threatened or preserved in the future. ?Michigan is one of the nation’s best sports states, home to countless amateur squads, two Big Ten schools, and professional teams in all four major sports whose histories reach back to the start of their leagues—something only New York, Massachusetts, and Illinois can also claim. This book covers the spectrum, from insider profiles of big names like Magic Johnson, Bo Schembechler, and Joe Louis, to cautionary tales of the debilitating greed threatening our favorite pastimes, to uplifting stories of the unsung heroes whose passion drives them to coach Little League baseball teams or run summer camps for peanuts. These stories speak to the value of sports, but also to our values. Whether a Spartan or a Wolverine, a long-suffering Lions’ backer or a diehard Wing-Nut, a lifetime sports fan or just someone who loves a good story, there is something here for everyone.

Book excerpt: Brick City is a novel that tells the hopes and dreams of Ginger, a forty-three-year-old single mother of three teenaged children: nineteen-year-old son, Ralph; sixteen-year-old daughter, Susan; and fourteen-year-old daughter, Helen. In spite of Gingers dubious past, she was able to eke out a fair living for her children. Things were going well in her household until Nick, a one-time gangster, was released from prison and arrived to collect an old debt from a longtime friend. His method of collecting left Gingers hopes and dreams shattered and the little community of Brick City devastated.
