Book excerpt: The Akamba are among the largest communities in Kenya and have a rich history and culture. In the pre-colonial era, the Akamba derived wealth from hunting and trading expeditions that covered much of eastern Africa. After the onset of colonialism, they lost their trading empire and sunk into poverty that was exacerbated by deadly famines and pestilence. The book describes the community's fight for survival and its attempt to adjust to modernity while retaining its culture. Through this detailed study of the community's past, the author attempts to project the way forward for the Akamba in pursuit of the lost glory

Book Synopsis Ethnicity and Empire in Kenya by : Myles Osborne
Download or read book Ethnicity and Empire in Kenya written by Myles Osborne and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the creation and development of ethnic identity among the Kamba. Comprising approximately one-eighth of Kenya's population, the British considered the Kamba East Africa's premier 'martial race' by the mid-twentieth century: a people with an apparent aptitude for soldiering. The reputation, indeed, was one that Kamba leaders used to leverage financial rewards from the colonial state. However, beneath this simplistic exterior was a maelstrom of argument and debate. Men and women, young and old, Christians and non-Christians, and the elite and poor fought over the virtues they considered worthy of honor in their communities, and which of their visions should constitute 'Kamba' identity. Based on extensive archival research and more than 150 interviews, Ethnicity and Empire is one of the first books to analyze the complex process of building and shaping 'tribe' over more than two centuries. It reveals new ways to think about themes crucial to the history of colonialism: soldiering, 'loyalty', martial race, and indeed the nature of empire itself.
Book Synopsis Middle Childhood by : Grace M Kaleli-Lee
Download or read book Middle Childhood written by Grace M Kaleli-Lee and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2022-09-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on anthropological research into middle childhood among the Akamba people of rural Makueni County in Kenya. Middle childhood is the period that falls approximately between the ages of six and twelve years. Among primates, it is a uniquely human life stage with clearly defined physiological markers. Among the Akamba people of Kenya, middle childhood is well delineated based on societal roles and cultural expectations. These children are old enough to have chores and household tasks assigned to them yet not old enough for secondary school which is the age most children leave home for boarding school. In many ways, children in this age group are important contributors in the family. This book explores the ecology of health during middle childhood in the context of the Akamba culture with the aid of anthropometric data and through the lens of life history.
