Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Education: Report of a Visit to the Schools of Massachusetts, and Opinions on the Subject of Technical Education, 1899 The question may be raised, How would the introduction of technical education be viewed by mechanics? There is an erroneous impression held by some persons that manual training schools are schools for teaching trades, and these are not in the interest of skilled mechanics. In the United States the laboring classes and the mechanics are, I was told, the most ardent friends of technical education. It is a mistake to infer that the masses need only a good elementary education. It is not to be wondered that municipalities are slow to move, and that apathy is found regarding technical education, so long as the value of intelligence in mechanical operations is not fully recognized. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technical Educator, Vol. 1: An Encyclopaedia of Technical Education Before entering upon the course of lessons which we are about to lay before our readers in the technical educator (which is intended to furnish a practical sequel to the theoretical lessons contained in the popular educator, and to which work indeed it forms a necessary supplement), it appears desirable to state what is understood by Technical Education, and to give some general idea of the system upon which it is our intention to proceed. Technical Education, as we have already explained in the address To our Readers in the concluding volume of the popular educator, means literally education in any special art, and in this sense, of course, it is capable of almost the widest application. There is, in fact, no calling in life, no profession, voca tion, or employment, from statecraft and diplomacy downwards, through. At the present day, how ever, the term Technical Education is not generally understood in so wide a signification, but it is confined to special instruction designed to enable men who live by hand labour to apply to their handicraft the lead ing principles Of science which bear more especially upon it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Vocational Education But the great social movements of our time have finally brought to us unmistakable demands for democratic and efficient systems Of vocational education. Heretofore such school vocational education as we have had has been aristo cratic for the leaders it was claimed; and non-school vocational education has been haphazard, unorganized, and deplorably lacking in efficiency. What we call the contemporary movement for vocational education is in stark simplicity the result Of an enormous social demand for schools for the vocational education of the rank and file Of workers. Schools Of professional educa tion for the training of leaders we have long had but corporate effort has, until almost yesterday, balked at the problem of providing training schools for workers who toil in the unexalted callings of mine, farm, forest, shop, factory, shipboard, and home. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Education: What It Is and What American Public Schools Should Teach The destiny of the laborer is, perhaps, more influenced by steam as a carrier than by steam as a producer; for steam, especially when aided by telegraphic communica tion, is a great leveller in the world of industry. No levelling produces just the same pleasing effect for all. Take England as an illustration. Having established her manufactures when her insular position and sail carriage gave her comparatively easy access to the Euro pean and other markets, she now finds herself every where confronted by products which the railway has brought from the manufacturing centres of interior Europe. While she glories in the railway achievements of her Stephenson, those very achievements have greatly diminished the vantage which was previously hers in the market of the world. But what of vantage she has lost through steam and telegraphy, she is now strug gling to recover through a better education of her pro ducing classes. By the same levelling process the American laborer is affected. Unless he does his best, he is liable to be driven from the market, even of his own town, by a producer who lives hundreds, perhaps thousands, of miles away. This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Condition and Tendencies of Technical Education in Germany The question of the technical phases of education is, with any nation, a vital one. Perhaps this is true of Germany as it is of no other European country. This may be mainly due to one of several causes. First, as to the length of time technical education has had a place in the German schools. In some form or another, and in a greater or lesser degree, such instruction has been in vogue for many years, and has in no small measure become part and parcel of the educational fabric of the nation. Again, throughout the various German States, the work is rather widely differentiated, this owing in part to the fact that the varying lines of industry in adjacent localities even, give color and bent to the technical education of any particular locality. An extensive field is thus comprehended under the term "technical education." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
