Download or read book Legalism written by Fernanda Pirie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Community' and 'justice' recur in anthropological, historical, and legal scholarship, yet as concepts they are notoriously slippery. Historians and lawyers look to anthropologists as 'community specialists', but anthropologists often avoid the concept through circumlocution: although much used (and abused) by historians, legal thinkers, and political philosophers, the term remains strikingly indeterminate and often morally overdetermined. 'Justice', meanwhile, is elusive, alternately invoked as the goal of contemporary political theorizing, and wrapped in obscure philosophical controversy. A conceptual knot emerges in much legal and political thought between law, justice, and community, but theories abound, without any agreement over concepts. The contributors to this volume use empirical case studies to unpick threads of this knot. Local codes from Anglo-Saxon England, north Africa, and medieval Armenia indicate disjunctions between community boundaries and the subjects of local rules and categories; processes of justice from early modern Europe to eastern Tibet suggest new ways of conceptualizing the relationship between law and justice; and practices of exile that recur throughout the world illustrate contingent formulations of community. In the first book in the series, Legalism: Anthropology and History, law was addressed through a focus on local legal categories as conceptual tools. Here this approach is extended to the ideas and ideals of justice and community. Rigorous cross-cultural comparison allows the contributors to avoid normative assumptions, while opening new avenues of inquiry for lawyers, anthropologists, and historians alike.
Book Synopsis Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England by : Judith M. Bennett
Download or read book Ale, Beer, and Brewsters in England written by Judith M. Bennett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1996-11-07 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women brewed and sold most of the ale consumed in medieval England, but after 1350, men slowly took over the trade. By 1600, most brewers in London were male, and men also dominated the trade in many towns and villages. This book asks how, when, and why brewing ceased to be women's work and instead became a job for men. Employing a wide variety of sources and methods, Bennett vividly describes how brewsters (that is, female brewers) gradually left the trade. She also offers a compelling account of the endurance of patriarchy during this time of dramatic change.

Book Synopsis Crowds and Popular Politics in Early Modern England by : John Walter
Download or read book Crowds and Popular Politics in Early Modern England written by John Walter and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2013-07-19 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early modern England was marked by profound changes in economy, society, politics and religion. It is widely believed that the poverty and discontent which these changes often caused resulted in major rebellion and frequent ‘riots’. Whereas the politics of the people have often been described as a ‘many-headed monster’; spasmodic and violent, and the only means by which the people could gain expression in a highly hierarchical society and a state that denied them a political voice, the essays in this collection argue for the inherently political nature of popular protest through a series of studies of acts of collective protest, up to and including the English Revolution. The work of John Walter has played a central role in defining current understanding of the field and has been widely read and cited by those working on the politics of subaltern groups. This collection of essays offers a radical re-evaluation of the nature of crowds and protests during the period, and it will make fascinating reading for historians of the period.

Book Synopsis History of Universities by : Mordechai Feingold
Download or read book History of Universities written by Mordechai Feingold and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This issue of History of Universities, Volume XXXII / 1-2, contains the customary mix of learned articles and book reviews which makes this publication such an indispensable tool for the historian of higher education. Guest edited by Professor John Watts, this volume focuses on the history of Corpus Christi College, Oxford. Corpus Christi College, Oxford was founded in 1517 to advance humanistic learning in the service of God. This collection of essays by some of the leading historians of late medieval and early modern England takes the early history of the College as a starting point to explore the intellectual, social, religious, political, and cultural trends of the era of Renaissance and Reformation. Ranging from the fifteenth century to the seventeenth, and taking in the study of Greek and Hebrew; the practices of antiquarianism, charity, and divine worship; the experience of music, punishment, and the built environment; the networks that connected the college to London and the government; and the interactions of scholars with royal policy on religion, these fifteen essays and three commentaries aim to expose the multiple perspectives from which an early modern college can be viewed and understood. The relationship between 'Renaissance' and 'Reformation', and the social and cultural realities that accompanied these familiar concepts, form one central theme in the papers; the relationship between religious or educational institutions and the state form another. Corpus Christi itself emerges as less innovative than its historic reputation as the first collegium trilingue might suggest, but it becomes the gateway to a richer appreciation of the overlapping worlds of learning, religion and public life in a time of rapid change.
