Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Recollections of Abraham Lincoln So they are not here told except at the desire of friends, whose wishes expressed to me, have called them out. In a former paper read by me before this association, I indicated that I severed myself from my childhood's home in Clarksfield in 1852. With the ambitions of many another youth of this county, I then sought a home in the West, a location then in miles no farther away than now, but in imagination much farther. After a year spent in Indiana, close to the Illinois line, the tales of the rich and boundless prairies laying unoccupied just across that line, led the two boys, who I said in that paper left Huron county in August of that year, to Urbana, the county seat of a county of Illinois containing 1000 square miles of that prairie, then and now known as Champaign county. This county was then a part of the Eighth Judicial Circuit of Illinois, and the circuit courts of the eight counties constituting the circuit were presided over by the Hon. David Davis, afterwards one of the justices of the Supreme Court of the United States, and also, afterwards, a senator in the United States Senate from Illinois. The majesty of the law in the county was then personified by a two-story brick courthouse, thirty by forty feet in size and a nearby log jail, twenty feet square. The county seat then consisted of a little cluster of wooden dwellings, some of which were of logs, a few stores and shops and two hotels of the western variety. It stood at the geographical center of the county and its expectations of a future of any consequence were based upon the conscious wealth of its lands and upon the hoped for population which it was predicted was to come and occupy them when the projected Illinois Central Railroad, then nearing the county, should connect it with the outer world. Until then this county was in all respects, save its location, a frontier county and town. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: "Recollections of Abraham Lincoln 1847-1865 by Ward Hill Lamon remains an essential resource for anyone who wishes to know more about the inner workings of the Lincoln White House, and the humor, honesty, and kindness characteristic of the extraordinary man who fought to restore the Union and end slavery in America. It is a matter of wonder that not until Salvador Litvak decided to dramatize the Lincoln-Lamon friendship in his 2013 motion picture, Saving Lincoln-which inspired this long-needed, highly welcome reissue-that no playwright or filmmaker has ever mined this incredibly rich resource, or for that matter the unique relationship between the biographer and his celebrated subject, and the inexplicable friendship that most Lincoln hagiographers preferred to erase from history." - From the foreword by Harold Holzer This completely new edition of Ward Hill Lamon's book includes the text and source documents from the 1895 and 1911 editions, plus an in-depth foreword by Harold Holzer, an introduction by Saving Lincoln director Salvador Litvak, and many of the Civil War photographs used to make the film. The original book has been redesigned for enhanced readability, and an index has been added. Saving Lincoln is the true story of President Abraham Lincoln and his closest friend, U.S. Marshal Ward Hill Lamon, featuring sets created from actual Civil War photographs. "An important film that must be seen. Saving Lincoln is moving, ingenious, original and impressive." - Michael Medved, syndicated radio host "A film with personality... shows the human side of the President." - Louis Saenz, NPR

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recollections of Abraham Lincoln: 1847-1865 The reason for thinking that the public may be interested in my father's recollections of Mr. Lincoln, will be found in the following letter from Hon. J. P. Usher, Secretary of the Interior during the war: - Lawrence, Kansas, May 20, 1885. Ward H. Lamon, Esq., Denver, Col. Dear Sir, - There are now but few left who were intimately acquainted with Mr. Lincoln. I do not call to mind any one who was so much with him as yourself. You were his partner for years in the practice of law, his confidential friend during the time he was President. I venture to say there is now none living other than yourself in whom he so much confided, and to whom he gave free expression of his feeling towards others, his trials and troubles in conducting his great office. You were with him, I know, more than any other one. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Recollections of Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War A valued friend, who ranks as one of the ablest of American critics, to whom I have submitted these Recol lections for the purpose Of deciding whether they should, or should not, be given book publication, has just written me as follows: I have read the entire manuscript with very much interest and pleasure. It contains a great deal that is new to me and, I venture to say, that will be new to nine hundred and ninety-nine out of a thousand of the generation who took no active part in the affairs of the country in war times. Valuable side-light is thrown by your disclosures on some of the hidden springs and inner workings Of the times, and it appears to me that it is worthy to be preserved on account of its intrinsic value. In the hope that the reader may concur in the Opinion of this most excellent gentleman, this volume is given to the public. This book was released on 2020-10-16 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Quarter of a century has well-nigh rolled by since the tragic death of Abraham Lincoln. The prejudice and bitterness with which he was assailed have disappeared from the minds of men, and the world is now beginning to view him as a great historical character. Those who knew and walked with him are gradually passing away, and ere long the last man who ever heard his voice or grasped his hand will have gone from earth. With a view to throwing a light on some attributes of Lincoln's character heretofore obscure, and thus contributing to the great fund of history which goes down to posterity, these volumes are given to the world. If Mr. Lincoln is destined to fill that exalted station in history or attain that high rank in the estimation of the coming generations which has been predicted of him, it is alike just to his memory and the proper legacy of mankind that the whole truth concerning him should be known. The story of his life is truthfully and courageously told nothing coloured or suppressed; nothing false either written or suggested the reader will see and feel the presence of the living man. He will, in fact, live with him and be moved to think and act with him If, on the other hand, the story is coloured or the facts in any degree suppressed, the reader will be not only misled, but imposed upon as well. At last the truth will come, and no man need hope to evade it. There is but one true history in the world, said one of Lincoln's closest friends to whom I confided the project of writing a history of his life several years ago, and that is the Bible. It is often said of the old characters portrayed there that they were bad men. They are contrasted with other characters in history, and much to the detriment of the old worthies. The reason is, that the Biblical historian told the whole truth the inner life. The heart and secret acts are brought to light and faithfully photographed. In other histories virtues are perpetuated and vices concealed. If the life of King David had been written by an ordinary historian, the affair of Uriah would at most have been a quashed indictment with a denial of all the substantial facts. You should not forget there is a skeleton in every house. The finest character dug out thoroughly, photographed honestly, and judged by that standard of morality or excellence which we exact for other men is never perfect. Some men are cold, some lewd, some dishonest, some cruel, and many a combination of all. The trail of the serpent is over them all! Excellence consists, not in the absence of these attributes, but in the degree in which they are redeemed by the virtues and graces of life. Lincoln's character will, I am certain, bear close scrutiny. I am not afraid of you in this direction. Don't let anything deter you from digging to the bottom; yet don't forget that if Lincoln had some faults, Washington had more few men have less. In drawing the portrait tell the world what the skeleton was with Lincoln. What gave him that peculiar melancholy? What cancer had he inside?

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1898 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER VIII. MY CONNECTION WITH THE NEW YORK TRIBUNE. The purpose for which I had established the Continental Monthly was accomplished by the issue of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation. The North had at first taken up arms to maintain the Union, regardless of the extension or non-extension of slavery; but gradually a majority of the people had come to the conclusion that the life of the nation could not be preserved without the total extinction of the "peculiar institution." Of this I had been convinced by the general acclaim with which the Northern press had greeted the Emancipation Proclamation; but I soon had stronger evidence of it from personal contact with the people through a series of lectures that I delivered before literary associations in all the larger cities of the North. This revolution in public sentiment had been mainly brought about by the irresistible. "logic of events,"--the slow progress of the war, and the long series of disasters that had attended the Union armies; but though the people had thus been schooled by events, they had, doubtless, been largely influenced by the bold utterances of Charles G. Leland in the Continental Monthly, which had been scattered broadcast over the North. Clear-sighted statesmen had from the beginning seen that the real issue was the permanent establishment, or the entire extinction, of slavery; but Leland was the first to tell this truth to the people, and he told it in words that rang through the North like the notes of a bugle. With his whole heart and soul he had entered the conflict. His friends had counselled him to moderate his tone; William H. Seward had rewarded his zeal with the elegant anathema, "Damn Leland and the Continental;" and even Robert J. Walker had...
