Book Synopsis Solvent-Dependent Flexibility of Proteins and Principles of Their Function by : Alex I. Käiväräinen

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular biology has now advanced to the point where it is no longer possible to give a complete review of the available data on the conformational features of proteins. New data keep streaming in, and there is obviously an urgent need for some sort of general treatment of the subject. A systematic treatment of the large amount of data obtained by a great variety of methods on a great variety of objects must be based on the use of models; these should be as simple as possible, should conform to well-established scien tific laws, and at the same time be sufficiently flexible. The validity of the models finally arrived at is then confirmed or otherwise by testing the conclusions arrived at with their aid by means of experiment. After a suitable model has been adopted, it can be used in analyzing the experimental data. Such an analysis may result in one of three possible situations: neither the experi mental results nor their interpretation contradict the proposed model; the experimental results do not contradict the proposed model but their interpretation by the authors does; finally, both the experimental results and their interpretation may be found to be incompatible with the fundamental principles underlying the proposed model. The first situation is clearly the most desirable, and presents no difficulties.

Book Synopsis Membrane Proteins in Aqueous Solutions by : Jean-Luc Popot
Download or read book Membrane Proteins in Aqueous Solutions written by Jean-Luc Popot and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-08 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to be entirely devoted to the challenging art of handling membrane proteins out of their natural environment, a key process in biological and pharmaceutical research, but one plagued with difficulties and pitfalls. Written by one of the foremost experts in the field, Membrane Proteins in Aqueous Solutions is accessible to any member of a membrane biology laboratory. After presenting the structure, functions, dynamics, synthesis, natural environment and lipid interactions of membrane proteins, the author discusses the principles of extracting them with detergents, the mechanisms of detergent-induced destabilization, countermeasures, and recent progress in developing detergents with weaker denaturing properties. Non-conventional alternatives to detergents, including bicelles, nanodiscs, amphipathic peptides, fluorinated surfactants and amphipols, are described, and their relative advantages and drawbacks are compared. The synthesis and solution properties of the various types of amphipols are presented, as well as the formation and properties of membrane protein/amphipol complexes and the transfer of amphipol-trapped proteins to detergents, nanodiscs, lipidic mesophases, or living cells. The final chapters of the book deal with applications: membrane protein in vitro folding and cell-free expression, solution studies, NMR, crystallography, electron microscopy, mass spectrometry, amphipol-mediated immobilization of membrane proteins, and biomedical applications. Important features of the book include introductory sections describing foundations as well as the state-of-the-art for each of the biophysical techniques discussed, and topical tables which organize a widely dispersed literature. Boxes and annexes throughout the book explain technical aspects, and twelve detailed experimental protocols, ranging from in vitro folding of membrane proteins to single-particle electron cryomicroscopy, have been contributed by and commented on by experienced users. Membrane Proteins in Aqueous Solutions offers a concise, accessible introduction to membrane protein biochemistry and biophysics, as well as comprehensive coverage of the properties and uses of conventional and non-conventional surfactants. It will be useful both in basic and applied research laboratories and as a teaching aid for students, instructors, researchers, and professionals within the field.

Book Synopsis Coordination Chemistry in Non-Aqueous Solutions by : Victor Gutmann
Download or read book Coordination Chemistry in Non-Aqueous Solutions written by Victor Gutmann and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable attention has been focussed on non-aqueous chemistry in the last decade and this situation has arisen no doubt from a realization of the vast application of this branch of chemistry. Within this field much energetic work has been channelled into the determination of the coordination chemistry of tran sition metals in these solvent 8ystems. Elaborate experimental techniques have been developed to discover, in particular, the magnetic and spectral properties of complex compounds, and the theoretical background of such systems has been expanded to corroborate, as far as possible, the experimental results. This text has, however, a different bias from many books currently available on this branch of chemistry, and is designed to be a survey of known facts on many of the non-aqueous solvents currently in use mainly in the field of halogen chemistry, together with a discussion of these facts in the light of accepted principles. As such, it is hoped to close a gap in the literature of which many workers and advanced students in this field will be aware. The treatment is meant to be selective rather than completely comprehensive and must unevitably reflect some of the special interests of the author.

Book Synopsis Biomaterials Surface Science by : Andreas Taubert
Download or read book Biomaterials Surface Science written by Andreas Taubert and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-07-23 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the interface of biology, chemistry, and materials science, this book provides an overview of this vibrant research field, treating the seemingly distinct disciplines in a unified way by adopting the common viewpoint of surface science. The editors, themselves prolific researchers, have assembled here a team of top-notch international scientists who read like a "who's who" of biomaterials science and engineering. They cover topics ranging from micro- and nanostructuring for imparting functionality in a top-down manner to the bottom-up fabrication of gradient surfaces by self-assembly, from interfaces between biomaterials and living matter to smart, stimuli-responsive surfaces, and from cell and surface mechanics to the elucidation of cell-chip interactions in biomedical devices. As a result, the book explains the complex interplay of cell behavior and the physics and materials science of artificial devices. Of equal interest to young, ambitious scientists as well as to experienced researchers.
