Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Knowledge If I were to undertake to make complete acknowledgment of my indebtedness to others for stimulus and direction in connection with the study of the problems discussed in this volume, I should want to begin by referring to my first teacher of philosophy, Professor James Ten Broeke, of McMaster University, Toronto. But where to end I should scarcely know. I shall therefore mention only those whom I have to thank for one direct service or another in connection with the actual production of the present volume. Through the kindness of my former teachers, Professors J. R. Angell and A. W. Moore, of the University of Chicago; of my colleagues. Professors E. W. Hopkins, A. K. Rogers, and C. A. Bennett, of Yale University; of my former colleagues in Yale University, Professor W.E. Hocking (now of Harvard University) and Dr. H. T. Costello (now of Columbia University); and, finally, of Professor R. B. Perry, of Harvard University, and Professor D. S. Miller, of the General Theological Seminary, New York, various portions of the volume have been read in the manuscript, and as a result not a few helpful criticisms and suggestions have been received. I am particularly indebted to Dr. Costello in connection with the references to the logisticians in the last chapter. It should not be concluded, however, that here, or elsewhere in the book, any one except the author is to be held responsible for any of the opinions expressed. For friendly counsel and other manifestations of kindly interest in connection with the publishing of the work I am grateful to Dean Shailer Mathews, of the University of Chicago, and Professor E.Hershey Sneath, of Yale University. Book excerpt: "The Classic Collection of Henri Bergson" brings together some of the most influential philosophical works of Henri Bergson, the renowned French philosopher and recipient of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1927. This collection showcases Bergson's groundbreaking ideas and profound insights into the nature of time, consciousness, memory, evolution, laughter, and dreams. In "Time and Free Will," Bergson challenges traditional concepts of time and argues for the existence of subjective time, exploring the relationship between time, perception, and human freedom. "Matter and Memory" delves into the interplay between matter and consciousness, examining how memory shapes our understanding of reality. Bergson's "Creative Evolution" presents a groundbreaking theory of evolution that goes beyond the mechanistic view of life, emphasizing the vital force and the continuous emergence of novelty in the evolutionary process. "Laughter" explores the nature of humor, its role in human social interaction, and its connection to the human condition. Finally, "Dreams" offers a deep exploration of the realm of dreams, unveiling their significance in understanding the workings of the human mind and their potential for revealing hidden truths. Through his eloquent and thought-provoking writing, Bergson challenges established philosophical frameworks, offering fresh perspectives on fundamental concepts of existence and human experience. This collection is a valuable resource for scholars, students, and anyone interested in the philosophical inquiries that shaped the 20th century and beyond. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hermann Lotze was a key figure in the philosophy of the second half of the 19th century, influencing practically all leading philosophical schools of the late 19th and the early 20th century: (i) the neo-Kantians; (ii) Brentano and his school of descriptive psychology; (iii) the British idealists; (iv) Husserl’s phenomenology; (v) Dilthey’s philosophy of life; (vi) Frege’s new logic; (vii) the early Cambridge analytic philosophy; (viii) William James’s pragmatism. The book first presents the main ideas of Hermann Lotze’s philosophy (Part I), and then traces his influence on the descriptive psychology of Franz Brentano and Carl Stumpf (Part 2) and Cambridge analytic philosophy (Part 3). In addition, the book includes Bertrand Russell’s conspectus of J. E. McTaggart’s 1898 lectures on Lotze.
Book Synopsis The Case for Qualia by : Edmond Leo Wright
Download or read book The Case for Qualia written by Edmond Leo Wright and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 790 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical and scientific defenses of Indirect Realism and counterarguments to the attacks of qualiaphobes. Many philosophers and cognitive scientists dismiss the notion of qualia, sensory experiences that are internal to the brain. Leading opponents of qualia (and of Indirect Realism, the philosophical position that has qualia as a central tenet) include Michael Tye, Daniel Dennett, Paul and Patricia Churchland, and even Frank Jackson, a former supporter. Qualiaphiles apparently face the difficulty of establishing philosophical contact with the real when their access to it is seen by qualiaphobes to be second-hand and, worse, hidden behind a "veil of sensation"--a position that would slide easily into relativism and solipsism, presenting an ethical dilemma. In The Case for Qualia, proponents of qualia defend the Indirect Realist position and mount detailed counterarguments against opposing views. The book first presents philosophical defenses, with arguments propounding, variously, a new argument from illusion, a sense-datum theory, dualism, "qualia realism," qualia as the "cement" of the experiential world, and "subjective physicalism." Three scientific defenses follow, discussing color, heat, and the link between the external object and the internal representation. Finally, specific criticisms of opposing views include discussions of the Churchlands' "neurophilosophy," answers to Frank Jackson's abandonment of qualia (one of which is titled, in a reference to Jackson's famous thought experiment, "Why Frank Should Not Have Jilted Mary"), and refutations of Transparency Theory.
