This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although finite elasticity theory has its roots in the nineteenth century, its development was largely neglected until the end of the Second World War. Since then it has attracted a substantial amount of attention and considerable progress has been made both in our understanding of the basis of the subject and in its applications. It occurred to me about three years ago that finite elasticity had reached a level of development at which an international symposium on the subject was overdue. Accordingly, with strong encouragement from Professor P. M. Naghdi and numerous other colleagues, I submitted to the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics a proposal for their support of such a symposium to be held at Lehigh University during the period August 10-15, 1980. The proposal received enthusiastic support from the International Union and an international scientific committee under my chairmanship, consisting of Professors G. Fichera (Rome), W. T. Koiter (Delft), L. I. Sedov (Moscow), and A. J. M. Spencer (Nottingham), was assigned responsibility for the scientific program. In constructing the program we aimed at as broad a coverage as possible of the many aspects of the subject on which significant progress is currently being made. These range from theoretical studies of existence and uniqueness of solutions of the governing equations of finite elasticity theory to experimental studies of its application to such problems as tear resistance and friction in vulcanized rubbers.

Book Synopsis Finite Element Method by : Sinan Muftu
Download or read book Finite Element Method written by Sinan Muftu and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite Element Method: Physics and Solution Methods aims to provide the reader a sound understanding of the physical systems and solution methods to enable effective use of the finite element method. This book focuses on one- and two-dimensional elasticity and heat transfer problems with detailed derivations of the governing equations. The connections between the classical variational techniques and the finite element method are carefully explained. Following the chapter addressing the classical variational methods, the finite element method is developed as a natural outcome of these methods where the governing partial differential equation is defined over a subsegment (element) of the solution domain. As well as being a guide to thorough and effective use of the finite element method, this book also functions as a reference on theory of elasticity, heat transfer, and mechanics of beams. Covers the detailed physics governing the physical systems and the computational methods that provide engineering solutions in one place, encouraging the reader to conduct fully informed finite element analysis Addresses the methodology for modeling heat transfer, elasticity, and structural mechanics problems Extensive worked examples are provided to help the reader to understand how to apply these methods in practice

Download or read book Topics in Finite Elasticity written by Michael Hayes and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than fifty years ago, Professor R. S. Rivlin pioneered developments in both the theory and experiments of rubber elasticity. These together with his other fundamental studies contributed to a revitalization of the theory of finite elasticity, which had been dormant, since the basic understanding was completed in the nineteenth century. This book with chapters on foundation, models, universal results, wave propagation, qualitative theory and phase transitions, indicates that the subject he reinvigorated has remainded remarkably vibran and has continued to present significant deep mathematical and experimental challenges.

Book excerpt: This Handbook is intended as a desk reference for researchers, students and engineers working in various areas of solid mechanics and quantitative materials science. It contains a broad range of elasticity solutions. In particular, it covers the following topics: -Basic equations in various coordinate systems, -Green's functions for isotropic and anisotropic solids, -Cracks in two- and three-dimensional solids, -Eshelby's problems and related results, -Stress concentrations at inhomogeneities, -Contact problems, -Thermoelasticity. The solutions have been collected from a large number of monographs and research articles. Some of the presented results were obtained only recently and are not easily available. All solutions have been thoroughly checked and transformed to a userfriendly form.
Book Synopsis Mathematical Theory of Elasticity of Quasicrystals and Its Applications by : Tianyou Fan
Download or read book Mathematical Theory of Elasticity of Quasicrystals and Its Applications written by Tianyou Fan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-25 with total page 367 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inter-disciplinary work covering the continuum mechanics of novel materials, condensed matter physics and partial differential equations discusses the mathematical theory of elasticity of quasicrystals (a new condensed matter) and its applications by setting up new partial differential equations of higher order and their solutions under complicated boundary value and initial value conditions. The new theories developed here dramatically simplify the solving of complicated elasticity equation systems. Large numbers of complicated equations involving elasticity are reduced to a single or a few partial differential equations of higher order. Systematical and direct methods of mathematical physics and complex variable functions are developed to solve the equations under appropriate boundary value and initial value conditions, and many exact analytical solutions are constructed. The dynamic and non-linear analysis of deformation and fracture of quasicrystals in this volume presents an innovative approach. It gives a clear-cut, strict and systematic mathematical overview of the field. Comprehensive and detailed mathematical derivations guide readers through the work. By combining mathematical calculations and experimental data, theoretical analysis and practical applications, and analytical and numerical studies, readers will gain systematic, comprehensive and in-depth knowledge on continuum mechanics, condensed matter physics and applied mathematics.

This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible introduction to the finite element method for solving numeric problems, this volume offers the keys to an important technique in computational mathematics. Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses, it outlines clear connections with applications and considers numerous examples from a variety of science- and engineering-related specialties. This text encompasses all varieties of the basic linear partial differential equations, including elliptic, parabolic and hyperbolic problems, as well as stationary and time-dependent problems. Additional topics include finite element methods for integral equations, an introduction to nonlinear problems, and considerations of unique developments of finite element techniques related to parabolic problems, including methods for automatic time step control. The relevant mathematics are expressed in non-technical terms whenever possible, in the interests of keeping the treatment accessible to a majority of students.
