Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some of My Experiences in the Great War Lready the amount of literature produced by the war has reached formidable dimensions, and I hope I may be forgiven for adding to the ever-growing output. This is not intended as a serious study of military opera tions and deals with no controversial matters either strate gical or political. It is merely a humble effort to place on record some of the events I have witnessed in the various theatres of war. My thanks are due to the proprietors of the Daily Telegraph for allowing me to reproduce some of the scenes which I have from time to in their columns. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My War Experiences in Two Continents She lived much alone, and the diary was her only confidante. In one of her books she says that ex pression is the most insistent of human needs, and that the inarticulate man or woman who finds no outlet in speech or in the affections, will often keep a little locked volume in which self can be safely revealed. Her diary occupied just such a place in her own inner life, and for that reason one hesitates to submit its pages even to the most loving and sympathetic scrutiny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Over the Threshold of War Personal Experiences of the Great European Conflict My diary is here illustrated and published in full, for the first time, and it is hoped that it will continue to reap for the good of the cause, since all proceeds go now to the Belgian Scholarship Committee. I saw old Russia under the regime of her Tzar prepare to mobilize her ponderous army just before the crash, and in the daily companionship of an unusually active and well informed Russian. From Russia I passed through Germany, into France, and it is believed that the most complete account of the amusing happenings during the first days of panic of my countrymen at the American Embassy there, drifted into the pages of this diary. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Experience in the World War Wishing to serve my country and humanity, I went to the city of Newark on the 26th day of July, 1917, walked up to Market Street and to an Army Recruiting Station, near the Pennsylvania R. R. Station and said to the recruiting officer that I wanted to enlist. The officer answered that he could help me to do that little thing. I was told to undress to be examined by the doctor. I was examined and passed O. K. After being examined. I was told to report in the morn ing all ready to go to camp. I then went back to the Delaware and Lackawanna R. R. Station on Broad Street, Newark, and took the train for my home, in the town of Dover. N. J. To bid good-bye to my parents and friends. I left home the next morning, July 27. 1917 on the train for Newark. At this time, I was working for the Morris County Traction Company as conductor and was rooming at Mrs. Julia Gilmore's at 44 Hudson Street Dover, N. J. Mrs. J. Gilmore and her son, Edward, came to the station with me and there I met my mother, father, sister and Aunt Elizabeth and, just before the train came, Tom Corcoran came and bade me good-bye and good luck. I then bid them all good - bye. It was hard for me to leave them all behind but I felt that duty called, so made the best of it. I arrived in Newark and went to the Recruiting Station and had a little talk 'with the recruiting officer, who told me to come back at A. M. And go to lunch, this I did. In the meantime, while I was waiting for the time to pass, I took a walk in the city of Newark. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Experiences of the War Between France and Germany, Vol. 1 of 2 IT is right to state that a large proportion of the material of these two volumes consists of letters con tributed to The Daily News, so far as concerns the events written of in Parts IL, III., and IV.; to The Morning Advertiser, as regards Part I. I have modified, excised, and te-written not a little, only to find the desire, which cannot be gratified, grow stronger and stronger to te-write the whole. As it is, what follows can claim to be no more than an honest narrative of events which passed within my own ken; nor did I allow any con sideration to deter me from bringing as many events as possible within my ken. Yet even of these the book makes no pretensions to be a historical record; but it may be of some service to the historian which the late war is sure to evoke. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Personal Reminiscences of the War 1861-65 I launch this little volume upon the great ocean of books, craving the indulgence of the kind reader for its shortcomings and imperfections, with the hope that it will not be viewed with a critic's eye, and that its imperfections may be charitably passed by. I have endeavored to relate my experiences in the great war of 1861 - 5 just as events occurred, as if I were detailing them to family or friends in private, or, as I have sometimes done in the past, at gatherings of veterans and friends during the past years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Little Part in a Big War From a letter dated February 20th, 1918, written in Paris to my old and intimate friend, M. Leo Sipser, I quote the following: "So you think my letters would make interesting manuscripts? Well, all I can say is that if they were written in disappearing ink, they would have unlimited circulation in every blind man's home in the country! Those are about the only places and under the only conditions wherein they might be appreciated. But thanks for the compliment just the same. Who ever heard of me as a man of letters!" I have not changed my opinion in the slightest degree, and I am compiling this narrative of my experiences and impressions to bolster my memory in future years - to keep me from forgetting the hardships and pleasures, the work and the play incidental to my stay in France as one of the American Expeditionary Forces sent to that country in the great World War of 1914-1918. The letters that follow were passed by the Censor in much the same form as they appear here. While gathering them together for this narrative, I have added dates, geographical locations, names of persons, and other details, which at the time of writing were forbidden by the General Orders covering Mail Censorship. I have also expanded some notes from my diary. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Diary of the Great War: Being a Current History of the World's Greatest Struggle He feels that if he has succeeded in his endeavor, this modest little volume will fill a niche otherwise vacant in the literature concerning The Great War. The writer is indebted to The Toronto Daily Star for permission to use the extracts which make up this volume. They form but a small part of the column The War Reviewed which the writer prepared as a daily feature of that paper from the day hostilities opened. No changes have been made in the text apart from those essential in condensation. By selecting the most pertinent portions of that current history of the war, a good bird's eye view of the struggle is obtained. It is salutary for stale vendettas, racial prejudices, diseases of the nerves, egoistic melancholias. But there are cerfain structural disturbances at which it takes a look and crosses to the other side, preferring to maintain 1ts tip-top spirits and its complacency. It does not cure a broken arm, and it leaves Belgium to be backed through. The New America trusts its melting-pot automatically to remake mixed breeds over night into citizens of the Republic. It believes that Ellis Island and the naturalization offices somehow do something with a laying on of hands which results in a nation. Meantime, we go on blindly and busily with our markets and base-ball and million-dollar films. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from War Memories Here it is - a little book which reflects upon every page the intimate heart-life of the American boy in France, during the World War - what he saw and felt and thought and did, not only in the great crises of battle; but on the march and in the camp - setting forth the first impressions made upon a soldier's mind, under foreign skies, at the cannon 's mouth, and revealing the fact that everywhere and always his thoughts were of the dear ones at home, thousands of miles across the seas. It is like a mirror in its faithful reproduction of the simpler elements which enter into vast and splen did scenes. We have heard much of general move ments; of grand climaxes; of superb exhibitions of man-power, in rthe aggregate; of millions, upon one side, confronting millions upon another; and so vast has been the picture presented to our minds that we have utterly failed to grasp it, except in its out standing characteristics. We have heard too little of the human side of the great wan - too little ofthe things which carry a direct appeal to the deep heart of America. We have been hungry for the minor details - for the smaller threads for the frag mentary episodes and incidents - for the rare and delicate and tender touches of color which are need ed to complete the picture, and to give it beauty, pathos, power and charm. Ever since, in the lone solitudes of the night, we first began to wonder where our boys were, on the other side - if they were still safe - we have longed for such a book; and so far as our personal observa tion extends it is the very first book of this character to appear in print, on either side of the water. The experiences of one soldier are not unlike those of another; and every fond parent who reads this book will feel that his or her boy is writing, though it may be that his spirit now looks down upon them from the unseen halls of the Great Valhalla.
