This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This PhD work was focused on the synthesis and the uses of carbohydrate bicyclic lactones for the access to sugar derivatives comprising an alpha, beta-unsaturated carbonyl function. Three types of bicyclic lactones were investigated: furanose C-C-Iinked butenolides, pyranose-fused butenolides, including S-or NH-analogues and carboxymethyl glycoside lactones (CMGLs). The synthetic methodology for butenolide containing-sugars was based on the Wittig olefination of 3- or 5-keto sugars and spontaneous intramolecular lactonization of the intermediate gamma-hydroxy axy alpha,beta-unsaturated esters. In the case of the fused systems, protected furanos-3-uloses were converted into 3-C-(ethoxycarbonyl)methylene furanoses. Further acid hydrolysis elicited both intramolecular transesterification and isomerization to the pyranose ring. Introduction of a sulfur or a nitrogen function at C-5 of the furanose precursors led to thiosugar analogues or to carbohydrate derivatives comprising both an amide function and an alpha,beta-unsaturated system, respectively. CMGLs were converted into 3-enopyranosid-2-uloses by a sequence involving opening of the lactone moiety by amines and oxidation/elimination of the resulting tri-0-acetylated 2-hydroxy pyranosides. Further Wittig olefination afforded 2-C-branched-chain conjugated dienepyranosides. Glycosides bearing a propargyl moiety were engaged in "click" chemistry reactions leading to 1,2,3-triazoles. Some of the new molecules were submitted to antimicrobial evaluation and (N-dodecylcarbamoyl)methyl enulosides proved to display the best efficacy. The most active one was the a-enuloside which showed very strong effect towards Bacillus species and strong activity against Enterococcus faecalis and the fungal pathogen Penicillium aurantiogriseum. Dienepyranosides exhibited a strong activity selectively towards E. faecalis. Triazole derivatives were virtually ineffective. Three of the bioactive compounds showed low acute toxicity in eukaryotic cells.

Book excerpt: Sugarcane enjoys a prominent position among agro-industrial crops and is commercially grown in 115 tropical and subtropical countries around the world. However, fluctuations in sugar prices have forced the sugarcane industry worldwide to broaden its revenue base by moving from single-commodity manufacturing to a range of value-added products. Utilizing the by-products in an innovative manner to create value-added products is the new course of action for sugar-producing countries. For many years sugarcane was regarded as a single-product crop, i.e., only useful for producing sugar. Its actual potential is now increasingly being recognised by the industry and there is a growing trend toward the manufacturing of allied products from sugarcane. Therefore, the focus is now on the establishment of sugar-agro-industry complexes, processing not just sugar but a range of other products. This book provides a comprehensive overview of sugarcane not only as a source of sweetening agents but also for many other uses, including as a source of bio-energy. It also explores the trend of sugar consumption and suggests practices to curb the consumption of sugar products in order to tackle obesity and reduce public health costs. The book underscores the need to diversify sugarcane and highlights means of doing so, while also addressing various innovations and technologies being developed in connection with sugar, sugar derivatives, and sugar industry by-products for sustainable utilization in the sugar-agro industry. Accordingly, it offers a valuable resource for professionals and R&D units in the sugar industry, and for students of agronomy and related fields.
Book Synopsis The Case Against Sugar by : Gary Taubes
Download or read book The Case Against Sugar written by Gary Taubes and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2016-12-27 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the best-selling author of Why We Get Fat, a groundbreaking, eye-opening exposé that makes the convincing case that sugar is the tobacco of the new millennium: backed by powerful lobbies, entrenched in our lives, and making us very sick. Among Americans, diabetes is more prevalent today than ever; obesity is at epidemic proportions; nearly 10% of children are thought to have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. And sugar is at the root of these, and other, critical society-wide, health-related problems. With his signature command of both science and straight talk, Gary Taubes delves into Americans' history with sugar: its uses as a preservative, as an additive in cigarettes, the contemporary overuse of high-fructose corn syrup. He explains what research has shown about our addiction to sweets. He clarifies the arguments against sugar, corrects misconceptions about the relationship between sugar and weight loss; and provides the perspective necessary to make informed decisions about sugar as individuals and as a society.

Book Synopsis Carbohydrate Chemistry by : R J Ferrier
Download or read book Carbohydrate Chemistry written by R J Ferrier and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbohydrate Chemistry provides review coverage of all publications relevant to the chemistry of monosaccharides and oligosaccharides in a given year. The amount of research in this field appearing in the organic chemical literature is increasing because of the enhanced importance of the subject, especially in areas of medicinal chemistry and biology. In no part of the field is this more apparent than in the synthesis of oligosaccharides required by scientists working in glycobiology. Clycomedicinal chemistry and its reliance on carbohydrate synthesis is now very well established, for example, by the preparation of specific carbohydrate- based antigens, especially cancer-specific oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates. Coverage of topics such as nucleosides, amino-sugars, alditols and cyclitols also covers much research of relevance to biological and medicinal chemistry. Each volume of the series brings together references to all published work in given areas of the subject and serves as a comprehensive database for the active research chemist Specialist Periodical Reports provide systematic and detailed review coverage in major areas of chemical research. Compiled by teams of leading authorities in the relevant subject areas, the series creates a unique service for the active research chemist, with regular, in-depth accounts of progress in particular fields of chemistry. Subject coverage within different volumes of a given title is similar and publication is on an annual or biennial basis.
Book Synopsis The Sugars and Their Simple Derivatives (Classic Reprint) by : John E. Mackenzie
Download or read book The Sugars and Their Simple Derivatives (Classic Reprint) written by John E. Mackenzie and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-13 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sugars and Their Simple Derivatives The following pages are based on a course of lectures first given at Birkbeck College, London, in 1903, and subsequently at the University of Edinburgh. In addition to students of pure ch'emistry, others interested in medicine, brewing and distilling, sugar manufacture, etc., attended these lectures. On this account more attention has been devoted to such subjects as metabolism, fermentation and the manufacture of sugars than would have been the case otherwise. It is hoped that the book may serve as a companion to works on physiological chemistry and to technological works on brewing, distilling, sugar manufacture and sugar analysis.
