Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Early Jewish Catechisms: An Address Delivered in the Course of Public Lectures at the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, March 25, 1909 The book itself begins with the first conversation be tween the teacher and his pupil. The pupil greets the teacher on entering, and being asked who he was, he says that he is a, Jew born. In the image of God. The discussion at once turns on the point of the purpose of existence. The pupil declares that he was born to serve God without the expectation of any reward, al though the reward is sure to come in the next world. To the rabbi's question as to the means by which we might expect to inherit the world to come, the pupil is made to declare the three cardinal principles of religion - faith in God, trust and love. In describing the prin ciple of faith, the youth is led to enumerate the thir teen creeds of Maimonides, being frequently interrupted by the teacher, thereby eliciting further explanation and elaboration. Trust in God is the next point discussed, which. Is made to include divine providence, God's kind ness to all creatures, and, as a corollary, the doctrine of prayer. Love of God and love of all his creatures are then made the basis for the whole Law. There are seven deadly sins which men must shun - idleness, pride, glut tony, sensuality, anger, stinginess and jealousy, all of which have their corresponding virtues. After enumer ating several other sins that are hateful to God and summarizing the whole system as laid down, the teach er asks the pupil what difference there is in the knowl edge one has of these matters from tradition, as he has it, and the knowledge which one obtains by reason ing these things out for himself. To this the pupil re plies that while the difference is not apparent to him, still he thinks that it would be more satisfactory if the teacher were to explain to him these principles so that his belief might be strengthened thereby. The teacher is very much pleased with the answer and gives him a lengthy discourse ou' proper religious and moral conduct. With' which the book concludes. Most of the Bible was written by Jews and in Hebrew. Most of the early Christian leaders were Jews. Even Paul, called the Apostle to the Gentiles, would visit the synagogue first and preach there, and he wrote with great passion about his hope for his own people. Many modern Christians have forgotten about their Jewish roots. They may not formally rip pieces out of their Bibles, but much like the early Christian heretic Marcion, they act as though these portions of scripture no longer apply. They don't read them, study them, preach from them, or apply them. As a result, they often do not understand the New Testament correctly. Nancy Petrey has a passion both for the Jewish people and for calling Christians to understand their Jewish roots. In the pages of this short book, you'll get a taste of the way in which Christian history and belief has Jewish roots. You'll be blessed if you learn to recognize those roots.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In describing the career of Abraham Yagel, a Jewish physician, kabbalist, and naturalist who lived in northern Italy from 1553 to about 1623, David Ruderman observes the remarkable interplay between early modern scientific thought and religious and occult traditions from a wholly new perspective: that of Jewish intellectual life. Whether he was writing about astronomical discoveries, demons, marvelous creatures and prodigies of nature, the uses of magic, or reincarnation, Yagel made a consistent effort to integrate empirical study of nature with kabbalistic and rabbinic learning. Yagel's several interests were united in his belief in the interconnectedness of all thing--a belief, shared by many Renaissance thinkers, that turns natural phenomena into "signatures" of the divine unity of all things. Ruderman argues that Yagel and his coreligionists were predisposed to this prevalent view because of occult strains in traditional Jewish thought He also suggests that underlying Yagel's passion for integrating and correlating all knowledge was a powerful psychological need to gain cultural respect and acceptance for himself and for his entire community, especially in a period of increased anti-Semitic agitation in Italy. Yagel proposed a bold new agenda for Jewish culture that underscored the religious value of the study of nature, reformulated kabbalist traditions in the language of scientific discourse so as to promote them as the highest form of human knowledge, and advocated the legitimate role of the magical arts as the ultimate expression of human creativity in Judaism. This portrait of Yagel and his intellectual world will well serve all students of late Renaissance and early modern Europe.
