Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Ruthenium is concerned with the chemistry of ruthenium, with emphasis on synthesis and structure. The discussion spans a wide range of fields, from coordination chemistry and organometallic chemistry to structural chemistry (of both molecular and extended lattices), electrochemistry and photochemistry, as well as kinetics and spectroscopy. Comprised of 15 chapters, this book begins with an introduction to the discovery and early history of ruthenium, along with its extraction and purification, isotopes, physical and chemical properties, and applications. The discussion then turns to the concept of oxidation state and a scheme for systematizing descriptive inorganic chemistry together with its applicability to ruthenium chemistry. Subsequent chapters focus on the chemistry of ruthenium(VIII), ruthenium(VII), ruthenium(VI), ruthenium(V), ruthenium(IV), ruthenium(III), ruthenium(II), ruthenium(I), and ruthenium(0). The book also considers ruthenium carbonyl clusters and nitrosyls before concluding with a review of the photophysics and photochemistry of tris(diimine)ruthenium(II) complexes. This monograph will be useful to students, practitioners, and researchers in the field of inorganic chemistry, as well as those who are interested in the chemistry of ruthenium.

Book excerpt: Scientific community has shown decent research interest in the field of organometallic complexes based on platinum group metals owing to their plausible use in synthetic and industrial chemistry. In this regard, transition metal complexes containing 6-arene, 5-Cp and Cp* have drawn special attention. In particular, arene complexes have emerged as versatile intermediate in organic synthesis as a consequence of the ease with which the arene ligand can be functionalized. The presence of a transition metal center and ancillary ligands on one face of the coordinated arene can serve as a valuable stereochemical element. The utility of 6-arene and 5-Cp and Cp* metal complexes emanates not only from the reactivity inherent to the coordinated ring but, also from the control over three facially disposed coordinated sites about a given metal center afforded by incorporation of an arene ligand. In search of new systems based on arene ruthenium chemistry which can behave as potential metallo-ligands, new 6-arene ruthenium and analogous 5-Cp complexes based on chelating N, N and N, O donor ligands and non-chelating nitrogen donor organic ligands has been synthesized and fully characterized.

Book excerpt: The analogy between the chemistry of molecular transition metal clusters and the processes of chemisorption and catalysis at metal surfaces (the Cluster Surface analogy) has for a number of years provided an interplay between experimental and theoretical inorganic and physical chemists. This collaborative approach has born fruit in the use of well defined modes of metal-ligand bonding in discrete molecular clusters, models for metal-ligand binding on surfaces. Some of the key topics discussed in The Synergy between Dynamics and Reactivity at Clusters and Surfaces are: (1) Mechanisms of the fluxional behaviour in clusters in the liquid phase and the connections with diffusion processes on extended surfaces. The role of metal-metal bond breaking in diffusion. (2) Analogies in the structure of chemisorbed species and related ligands on metallic clusters. (3) Analogies between benzene surface chemistry on extended metal surfaces and on metal surfaces in molecular cluster compounds with particular reference to structural distortions. (4) The role of mobile precursors for dissociation of chemisorption on extended metals and on clusters. Are there analogies in the ligand attachment during cluster compound synthesis? (5) The role of defect sites on metal surfaces in catalyzing chemical reactions and the connection to the special bonding properties of sites on metal clusters having lowest metal-metal coordination. (6) The size of metal clusters needed to mimic surface phenomena on bulk metal surfaces. Different sites needed for different phenomena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last 60 years the increasing knowledge of transition metal chemistry has resulted in an enormous advance of homogeneous catalysis as an essential tool in both academic and industrial fields. Remarkably, phosphorus(III) donor ligands have played an important role in several of the acknowledged catalytic reactions. The positive effects of phosphine ligands in transition metal homogeneous catalysis have contributed largely to the evolution of the field into an indispensable tool in organic synthesis and the industrial production of chemicals. This book aims to address the design and synthesis of a comprehensive compilation of P(III) ligands for homogeneous catalysis. It not only focuses on the well-known traditional ligands that have been explored by catalysis researchers, but also includes promising ligand types that have traditionally been ignored mainly because of their challenging synthesis. Topics covered include ligand effects in homogeneous catalysis and rational catalyst design, P-stereogenic ligands, calixarenes, supramolecular approaches, solid phase synthesis, biological approaches, and solubility and separation. Ligand families covered in this book include phosphine, diphosphine, phosphite, diphosphite, phosphoramidite, phosphonite, phosphinite, phosphole, phosphinine, phosphinidenene, phosphaalkenes, phosphaalkynes, P-chiral ligands, and cage ligands. Each ligand class is accompanied by detailed and reliable synthetic procedures. Often the rate limiting step in the application of ligands in catalysis is the synthesis of the ligands themselves, which can often be very challenging and time consuming. This book will provide helpful advice as to the accessibility of ligands as well as their synthesis, thereby allowing researchers to make a more informed choice. Phosphorus(III) Ligands in Homogeneous Catalysis: Design and Synthesis is an essential overview of this important class of catalysts for academic and industrial researchers working in catalyst development, organometallic and synthetic chemistry.

This book was released on 2004 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes three investigations of the dinuclear ruthenium complex, [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]Ru2(CO)4: (1) its use as a catalyst for the hydroamination of alkynes by a new mechanism, (2) its reactions with H2 to give new ruthenium clusters containing bridging hydride ligands, and (3) the determination of thermodynamic and kinetic acidities of two related complexes [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]Ru2(CO)3[P(OR)3]HBF4− (R= Me, Ph). A fundamentally new mechanism for alkyne hydroamination catalyzed by the ruthenium complex, [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]Ru2(CO)3(C2H4)H+BF4−, has been proposed. Many of the intermediates in the catalytic cycle have been isolated and/or characterized spectroscopically and found to react according to the proposed mechanism. The catalyst activity is terminated as a result of the isomerization of a bridging alkyne ligand in a key intermediate in the catalytic cycle. The butterfly cluster, [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]2Ru4(CO)3H4, and the square planar cluster, [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]2Ru4(CO)4H4, have been isolated from the photochemical reaction of H2 with the doubly-linked dicyclopentadienyl complex, [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]Ru2(CO)4, in benzene. Wavelength-dependent photolysis studies suggest that the first step in the reaction of [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]Ru2(CO)4 with H2 involves metal-metal bond cleavage. The reaction of the protonated phosphite complexes, [([eta]5-C5H3)2(SiMe2)2]Ru2(CO)3[P(OR)3]H+BF4− (R= Me, Ph), with tertiary amines (DABCO, 4-methylmorpholine, NEt3, N(n-Bu)3) results in clean deprotonation of the metal-metal bond by the amine. Equilibrium measurements show that the P(OPh)3 complex is more acidic than the P(OMe)3 complex. The rates of deprotonation of the phosphite complexes have been determined and follow the rate law: Rate = k1[complex] + k2[amine][complex]. Comparisons of the k2 rate constants reveal that the reactions are much more sensitive to the steric properties of the amine and metal complex than to electronic factors.
