Book Synopsis Estimation and Analysis of Insect Populations by : Lyman L. McDonald
Download or read book Estimation and Analysis of Insect Populations written by Lyman L. McDonald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this volume were presented at a symposium/workshop on "The Estimation and Analysis of Insect Populations" that was held at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, in January, 1988. The meeting was organized with financial support from the United States - New Zealand Cooperative Science Program and the University of Wyoming. The purpose was to bring together approximately equal numbers of quantitative biologists and biometricians in order to (1) provide a synthesis and evaluation of currently available methods for modeling and estimating parameters of insect population, and to (2) stimulate research into new methods where this is appropriate. The symposium/workshop attracted 46 participants. There were 35 papers presented in four subject areas: analysis of stage-frequency data, modeling of population dynamiCS, analysis of spatial data, and general sampling and estimation methods. New results were presented in all these areas. All except one of the papers is included in the present volume.
Book Synopsis The Physiology of Insecta by : Morris Rockstein
Download or read book The Physiology of Insecta written by Morris Rockstein and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physiology of Insecta, Second Edition, Volume I, is part of a multivolume treatise that brings together the known facts, the controversial material, and the many still unsolved and unsettled problems of insect physiology. Since the first edition of this multivolume treatise was published, there has been a notable expansion of scientific endeavor in each of the various aspects of insect physiology. The original three-volume work has now grown to a thoroughly revised six-volume treatise. The present volume contains six chapters and begins with a discussion of the biology of the Insecta. This is followed by separate chapters on the structure and origin of the female reproductive system; the control of oogenesis, semen production, sexual behavior, and ovipostion; physiological and biochemical changes during insect development; insect endocrinology; and aging in insects.

Book Synopsis Biochemistry of Insects by : Morris Rockstein
Download or read book Biochemistry of Insects written by Morris Rockstein and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Insects reviews the state of knowledge in insect biochemistry. The book begins by examining the function of carbohydrates in regulating and maintaining the life processes of insects. This is followed by separate chapters on the functional roles of lipids and proteins in insects; and protein synthesis in insects. Subsequent chapters cover the chemistry of insect cuticle; the structure, distribution, and chemistry of insect biochromes; and chemical control of insect behavior. Also discussed are the biochemical aspects of the natural products used by insects in defensive contexts; the reaction of insecticides and related compounds with their targets; detoxification mechanisms in insects; and genetic variation in natural populations. Designed to serve as a basic textbook in field, this volume should be equally useful as an auxiliary text for most relevant courses in insect biology, particularly insect physiology, insect ecology, insect control, and economic entomology. The book should also serve as an important reference source for the advanced student, the research scientist, and the professional entomologist seeking authoritative details of relevant areas of subject matter.

Download or read book Caterpillars written by Nancy E. Stamp and published by Springer. This book was released on 1993 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caterpillars are excellent model systems for the investigation of insect-plant interactions, predator-prey interactions, and insect physiology. Despite this, however, there is at present only a limited understanding of the constraints on foraging patterns of caterpillars. A major problem is the difficulty of designing and analyzing experiments which account for multiple constraints. Caterpillars: Ecological and Evolutionary Constraints on Foraging reviews the present state of research into caterpillar biology while arguing for a multiple factor approach in studying insect herbivores. Written by leading authorities in entomology and ecology, it provides an explicit framework for carrying out such investigations. The book details the constraints of the foraging patterns of caterpillars, including phylogenetic constraints, the physical environment, nutritional supply and demand, predators, and plant chemical defenses. It also analyzes caterpillar adaptations, such as sociality, mutualism, aposematism, and cryptic morphology, and covers population dynamics and the influence of environmental factors upon tropical, temperate, and arctic caterpillars. The book concludes with a discussion of the implications of this material for pest management, forest systems, and agroecosystems.
Book Synopsis Current Trends of Insect Physiology and Population Dynamics: Modeling Insect Phenology, Demography, and Circadian Rhythms in Variable Environments by : Petros T. Damos
Download or read book Current Trends of Insect Physiology and Population Dynamics: Modeling Insect Phenology, Demography, and Circadian Rhythms in Variable Environments written by Petros T. Damos and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-06-12 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current eBook collection includes substantial scientific work in describing how insect species are responding to abiotic factors and recent climatic trends on the basis of insect physiology and population dynamics. The contributions can be broadly split into four chapters: the first chapter focuses on the function of environmental and mostly temperature driven models, to identify the seasonal emergence and population dynamics of insects, including some important pests. The second chapter provides additional examples on how such models can be used to simulate the effect of climate change on insect phenology and population dynamics. The third chapter focuses on describing the effects of nutrition, gene expression and phototaxis in relation to insect demography, growth and development, whilst the fourth chapter provides a short description on the functioning of circadian systems as well as on the evolutionary dynamics of circadian clocks.
