Book Synopsis Higher Cortical Functions in Man by : Alexandr Romanovich Luria
Download or read book Higher Cortical Functions in Man written by Alexandr Romanovich Luria and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 654 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This full-length translation of Professor Luria's book introduces to the English speaking world a major document in neuropsychology, summarizing Professor Luria's earlier contributions to that area for nearly a third of a century. It is a monumental contribution. Nothing of this scope exists in the Western literature of this field, with the possible exception of Ajuriaguerra and Hecaen's book (in French) on the cerebral cortex. Professor Luria's book thus marks a further and decisive step toward the eventual coalescence of neurology and psychology, a goal to which only a few laboratories in the East and West have been devoted over the last decades. The book is unique in its organization. The first half deals with observations and interpretations concerning the major syndromes of man's left cerebral hemisphere: those grievous distortions of higher functions traditionally described as aphasia, agnosia, and apraxia. There is also a detailed and brilliant analysis of the syndrome of massive frontal-lobe involvement. The entire second half of the book is given over to a painstaking description of Professor Luria's tests, many of them introduced by himself, and set out in such detail that anyone could repeat them and thus verify Professor Luria's interpretations.
Book Synopsis The Neuropsychology of Everyday Life: Issues in Development and Rehabilitation by : David E. Tupper
Download or read book The Neuropsychology of Everyday Life: Issues in Development and Rehabilitation written by David E. Tupper and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1990-12-31 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a period of some fifteen years following completion of my internship training in clinical psychology (1950-1951) at the Washington University School of Medicine and my concurrent successful navigation through that school's neuroanatomy course, clinical work in neuropsychology for me and the psychologists of my generation consisted almost exclusively of our trying to help our physician colleagues differentiate patients with neurologic disorders from those with psychiatric disorders. In time, experience led all of us from the several disciplines involved in this enterprise to the conclusion that the crude diagnostic techniques available to us circa 1945-1965 had garnered little valid information on which to base such complex, differential diagnostic decisions. It now is gratifying to look back and review the remarkable progress that has occurred in the field of clinical neuropsychology in the four decades since I was a graduate student. In the late 1940s such pioneers as Ward Halstead, Alexander Luria, George Yacorzynski, Hans-Lukas Teuber, and Arthur Benton already were involved in clinical studies that, by the late 1960s, would markedly have improved the quality of clinical practice. However, the only psychological tests that the clinical psychologist of my immediate post Second Wodd War generation had as aids for the diagnosis of neurologically based conditions involving cognitive deficit were such old standbys as the Wechsler-Bellevue, Rorschach, Draw A Person, Bender Gestalt, and Graham Kendall Memory for Designs Test.
Book Synopsis Experimental Techniques in Human Neuropsychology by : H. Julia Hannay
Download or read book Experimental Techniques in Human Neuropsychology written by H. Julia Hannay and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1986 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique sourcebook describes the research methods used to study human brain function and brain-behavior relationships. These range from relatively simple approaches, such as dichotic listening and tachistoscopic presentation, to computerized techniques such as cerebral blood flow measurements. The description of each method covers the underlying theory, variations on the basic paradigm, dependent measures, reliability and validity, and the equipment required. The authors also critically review research with normal and clinical populations. Because of the rapid expansion of the field of human neuropsychology--and accompanying technological advances--this volume will be valued as much by experienced researchers as by newcomers seeking an introduction to the variety of available procedures.

Book Synopsis Olfaction and Taste II by : T. Hayashi
Download or read book Olfaction and Taste II written by T. Hayashi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-02-02 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wenner-Gren Center International Symposium Series, Volume 8: Olfaction and Taste II covers the proceedings of the Second International Symposium, held in Tokyo, Japan on September 1965. This book is composed of 53 chapters that bring together theoretical and experimental studies on the chemoreception in insects, other invertebrates and vertebrates, from fishes to the monkey, and their significance in delineating human olfaction and taste. Other chapters deal with the study of the chemoreceptive organs and their related parts of the nervous system, which will be helpful in the analysis of the function of other sensory organs and their neural connections. This book also discusses the evidence that the epithelium of the front of the tongue has other properties than that of the back of the tongue as far as the conversion of its cells into gustatory cells is concerned under the influence of the outgrowing gustatory nerve fibers. The remaining chapters describe the transmission and decoding of coded information from the receptors in the central nervous system. This book is of value to biologists, physiologists, and research workers who are interested in the complex mechanism of olfaction and taste.
Book Synopsis Operative Techniques in Epilepsy by : John P. Girvin
Download or read book Operative Techniques in Epilepsy written by John P. Girvin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the specific surgical techniques currently employed in patients with intractable epilepsy; it also covers the relevant technical aspects of general neurosurgery. All of the approaches associated with the various foci of epilepsy within the cerebral hemispheres are considered, including temporal and frontal lobectomies and corticectomies, parietal and occipital lobe resections, corpus callosotomy, hemispherectomy, and multiple subpial incisions. In addition, an individual chapter is devoted to electrocortical stimulation and functional localization of the so-called eloquent cortex. The more general topics on which guidance is provided include bipolar coagulation (with coverage of the physical principles, strength of the coagulating current, use of coagulation forceps, the advantages of correct irrigation, and use of cottonoid patties) and all of the measures required during the performance of operations under local anesthesia. The book is designed to meet the need for a practically oriented source of precise information on the operative procedures employed in epilepsy patients and will be of special value for neurosurgical residents and fellows.
Book Synopsis Left-Handedness: Behavioral Implications and Anomalies by : S. Coren
Download or read book Left-Handedness: Behavioral Implications and Anomalies written by S. Coren and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-06-26 with total page 595 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Left-handedness has been shown to be a possible marker for various psychological and physical abnormalities. This book presents evidence by a number of researchers who evaluate whether there are indeed differences between left- and right-handers which extend into the broader psychological and physiological realms.Several chapters show that left-handedness is found in unexpectedly high proportions in populations that suffer from various immune deficiency diseases, in alcoholics, dyslexics, mental retardates, psychopaths and other clinical groups. The book indicates why left-handedness should be a marker for such conditions. The genetic and environmental pressures on handedness are explored. A model for pathological left-handedness is presented, along with some interesting data which suggests that left-handedness may be associated with reduced life-span. Finally, several chapters discuss the implications of handedness patterns in non-clinical populations.

It presents
Book Synopsis Treatment of Nerve Injury and Entrapment Neuropathy by : Y. Hirasawa
Download or read book Treatment of Nerve Injury and Entrapment Neuropathy written by Y. Hirasawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peripheral nerve injury and entrapment neuropathy often are complicated by injury to adjacent tissue such as bone, joints, blood vessels, and tendons. Clinicians who provide primary care in these areas require extensive knowledge of methods for treating wounds and nerve injuries. The most important element in the treatment of peripheral nerve injury is appropriate surgical repair or functional reconstruction; postoperative physical and occupational therapy are also necessary. This book summarizes current topics in Japan and other countries in the field of surgical nerve repair, including selection of treatment methods for peripheral nerve paralysis, practical issues in surgery, and aspects of postoperative care. The importance of evidence-based medicine is emphasized, with appropriate therapy decided on the basis of objective data. The book has a broad appeal to include general clinicians, clinical trainees, and allied health-care professionals.
