Book Synopsis The Potbelly Syndrome by : Russell Farris
Download or read book The Potbelly Syndrome written by Russell Farris and published by Basic Health Publications, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potbelly syndrome (PBS) is a metabolic disorder that affects about one-third of the adults in industrialized countries. Its most important symptoms are abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Contrary to popular belief, these conditions are caused by chronic infections, not by bad habits. PBS is initiated by a small, long-term excess of the stress hormone cortisol. The extra cortisol stimulates our appetite and slows down our metabolism. It makes fat accumulate in places where it isn't wanted or needed. Most of the fat settles around our waists, but some of it settles in our liver and muscles. Liver and muscle cells aren't supposed to store fat, and the fat prevents them from working correctly. As a result, we feel tired and hungry much of the time. As our potbellies grow and our PBS gets worse, our blood pressure, cholesterol, insulin, and blood sugar levels rise. Most of the excess cortisol is produced in response to mild, chronic infections. Some of the germs that cause PBS also produce sores in our arteries. When these sores are large enough, they can block arteries and cause heart attacks. The Potbelly Syndrome explains how to diagnose and treat some of the germs that cause PBS and heart disease. If you've done everything you were supposed to do and still gained weight, became diabetic, or had a heart attack, or if you are a medical professional who suspects that there are serious gaps in the current understanding of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, The Potbelly Syndrome will provide you with the answers you need to bring about better health. Book Synopsis Clinical Biochemistry V2 by : Herbert Spiegel
Download or read book Clinical Biochemistry V2 written by Herbert Spiegel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinical Biochemistry: Contemporary Theories and Techniques, Volume 2 is a collection of papers that deals with coagulation chemistry, inborn errors of metabolism (IEM), and the biochemistry of aging. One paper explains the biochemistry and clinical importance of lipoprotein-X (LP-X) as a marker for obstructive jaundice and also as a pointer in the deficiency of lecithin-cholesterol acyltransferase (LCAT), a rare inborn error of metabolism. Another paper presents guidelines in determining radioimmunoassay that are used, for example, in identifying enzymes produced by various malignant lesions. One paper reviews the basic molecular events and interactions involved in the blood clotting process and its related systems. To determine inborn errors of metabolism, the investigator can use screening techniques, prenatal diagnosis or therapy, and laboratory procedures related to IEM. To correct errors at the gene level, transgenosis and genetic engineering use recombinant DNA research techniques involving the introduction of a foreign DNA into the host cell. Some examples of IEM are phenylketonuria and hyperphenylalaninemia without PKU. This collection can prove useful for the clinical chemists, endocrinologists, internists, medical practitioners, and investigators involved in research on biochemistry.

Book Synopsis Solving the Paleo Equation by : Garrett Smith
Download or read book Solving the Paleo Equation written by Garrett Smith and published by Victory Belt Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solving the Paleo Equation: Stress, Nutrition, Exercise, Sleep is the ultimate guide to customizing your diet and lifestyle practices to your unique physical and metabolic needs. You′ll learn how to maximize your health practices and minimize your time and effort—no more driving yourself to exhaustion in hardcore fitness classes. No more strict, unsustainable, and impractical approaches to nutrition, either. Solving the Paleo Equation will help you not only avoid the ravages of adrenal fatigue, low metabolism, dwindling sex drive, and sleep problems—all-too-common consequences of overzealous workout regimes—it will help you rehabilitate from the unhealthful “health” protocols you’ve pursued in the past. Throughout this book, naturopathic physician Dr. Garrett Smith and independent health researcher and bestselling author Matt Stone address the main areas that the “health seeker” often dangerously ignores, like: • Sleep: One simple change in your bedroom could restore a normal cortisol rhythm! • Stress: Practices to keep your home and workspaces from raising your adrenaline and sapping your testosterone! • Exercise: Simple, free, reliable ways to self-monitor to avoid burnout and overtraining, regardless of the type of exercise! • Nutrition: Learn about the four “Anti-Stress S’s” and their powerful affects in the body! Instead of regurgitating the old-school saw to “eat clean and exercise more,” Smith and Stone focus on the basic pillars of true health and outstanding physical and mental function: sleep, stress, exercise, and nutrition. By analyzing and improving the fundamental areas of physical function—sleep quality, sexual performance, digestion, blood sugar regulation, body temperature, etc.—virtually every system of the body dramatically improves as well. In Solving the Paleo Equation, Smith and Stone go beyond simple Paleo theory and take readers on a journey toward a practical and useful understanding of how their bodies work. Using the simple tools of a thermometer and basic biofeedback markers (urine concentration, temperature of hands and feet, mood stability, bowel transit time, etc.), you will learn how to eat and live the most healthfully for YOU. Solving the Paleo Equation is not a health formula, philosophy, cult, fad, or movement, but an education. It’s the manual on do-it-yourself health enhancement.
