Book excerpt: Colloidal Surfactants: Some Physicochemical Properties focuses on the study of surface active agents. This book elaborates the importance of surface active agents in detergency, textile industry, and biological research. The four distinctive features of the substance—moderate maximum concentration of molecularly dispersed species; surface and interfacial depression in very dilute solution; micelle formation above a certain concentration; and solubilization of water-insoluble substances by micelles, are also described. Other topics include the effect of molecular type on the critical micelle concentration, critical micelle concentration, interaction of paraffin chain electrolytes with colloids, and monolayer studies of surface active agents. This publication is suitable for chemists and specialists researching on colloidal surfactants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now twelve years since Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents appeared. Since the publication of that monograph the subject has expanded rapidly as the unique potential of surfactants has become known to a wider circle of scientists. In a recent review Menger (Accounts of Chemical Research, 12 (1979) 111) estimated that since 1970 there have been over 2800 publications on micelles and micellization alone. The topic of catalysis in micellar media was in an early stage of development in 1968 but the growth in this subject has given rise to an excellent textbook by Fendler and Fendler. We have felt for some time that a revision of Solubilization by Surface-Active Agents was overdue. The book has been out of print for some time. Owing to pressure of other work, Professor P. H. Elworthy and Dr C. B. Macfarlane were unable to undertake the work of revision but while working together on an undergraduate textbook the present authors decided to set to work, realizing both the impossibility of producing a comprehensive textbook and the need to alter the scope of the book. Micellar solubilization occurs over a relatively small surfactant concentration range; because of this and because the phenomenon is never observed in isolation, we have extended the text to include surface activity, emulsions and suspensions and, as our emphasis is on formulation of medicinal products, to the of the toxicology of surface-active agents.

It reviews the solubilization of organic materials into surfactant aggregates, including micelles, vesicles and admicelles. The book also details methods of measuring solubilization that utilize both classical and newer instrumental techniques. It is intended for physical, surface, colloid and surfactant chemists; chemical, environmental and civil engineers; and upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in these disciplines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This and its companion Volumes 4 and 5 document the proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution held in Bordeaux, France, July 9-13, 1984. This symposium was the continuation of the series of symposia initiated in 1976 in Albany, New Vork under the title ""icellization, Solubilization and "icroemulsions". The next two symposia were labelled "Solution Chemistry of Surfactants" and "Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects" held in Knoxville, TN in 1978 and Potsdam, N. V. in 1980, respectively. In 19B2 at the time of the 4th Symposium in this series, it became amply evident that there was a definite need to have more a generic title to describe these biennial events, and after much deliberation it was decided that an appropriate title would be "Surfactants in Solution" as both the aggregation and adsorption aspects of surfactants were addressed. So the 4th Symposium was held in 1982 in Lund, Sweden, under this new rubric, and it was decided to continue these symposia in the future under this appellation. Naturally, the Bordeaux Symposium was dubbed as the 5th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution, and our logo became SIS which is very apropos and appealing. It was in Bordeaux that the decision was made to hold the 6th SIS Symposium in New Delhi and it is scheduled for August 18-22, 1986 in the capital of India.

Book excerpt: This and its companion volumes 8,9, and 10 document the proceedings of the 6th International Symposium on Surfactants in Solution (SIS) held in New Delhi, India, August 18-22, 1986 under the joint auspices of the Indian Society for Surface Science and Technology, and Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. As this symposium was a landmark -- it represented the tenth anniversary of this series of symposia -- so it is very apropos to reflect on how these symposia have evolved to their present size and status. The pedigree of this series of symposia goes back to 1976 when the premier symposium in this series was held. Actually in 1976 it was a modest start and it was not possible at that time to gaze at the crystal ball and predict what would be the state of affairs in 1986. For historical purposes, it should be recorded here that the first symposium was held in Albany, NY, under the title "Micellization, Solubilization and Microemulsions"; the second symposium was christened "Solution Chemistry of Surfactants" and was held in Knoxville, TN, in 1978; the venue for the third symposium in 1980 was Potsdam, NY, and it was dubbed "International Symposium on Solution Behavior of Surfactants: Theoretical and Applied Aspects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in its fourth edition, Surfactants and Interfacial Phenomena explains why and how surfactants operate in interfacial processes (such as foaming, wetting, emulsion formation and detergency), and shows the correlations between a surfactant's chemical structure and its action. Updated and revised to include more modern information, along with additional three chapters on Surfactants in Biology and Biotechnology, Nanotechnology and Surfactants, and Molecular Modeling with Surfactant Systems, this is the premier text on the properties and applications of surfactants. This book provides an easy-to-read, user-friendly resource for industrial chemists and a text for classroom use, and is an unparalleled tool for understanding and applying the latest information on surfactants. Problems are included at the end of each chapter to enhance the reader’s understanding, along with many tables of data that are not compiled elsewhere. Only the minimum mathematics is used in the explanation of topics to make it easy-to-understand and very user friendly.

Book excerpt: In response to intensifying interest on surfactant research brought on by recent innovation, Structure-Performance Relationships in Surfactants, Second Edition examines novel developments in our understanding of the properties and performance of surfactants at air-liquid, liquid-liquid, and solid-liquid interfaces, highlighting seven new chapters and carefully updated material to reflect current trends. This edition presents new material on the adsorption of vesicle-forming surfactants at the air-water interface, fluorinated surfactants having two hydrophobic chains, surface-active properties of telomer-type surfactants having several hydrocarbon chains, and the association behavior of amphiphilic dendritic polymers, among many other topics.
