Book Synopsis Mission San Francisco de Solano by : Allison Stark Draper
Download or read book Mission San Francisco de Solano written by Allison Stark Draper and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2003-12-15 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of the missions is a compelling human drama that is a vital piece not only of California history, but also of American history. Indeed, many keys to California's past lie in the stories of the 20 missions that stretch along the state's west coast from San Diego to San Francisco. This vital series is compatible with the mission-based curriculum used in fourth-grade California classrooms. It resonates equally with all social studies programs that explore the defunct notion of colonialism and its controversial role in the history of the United States, and with curricula that seek to explore the interaction of different cultures and the rights and voices of indigenous peoples.

Book Synopsis The Grandchildren of Solano López by : Bridget María Chesterton
Download or read book The Grandchildren of Solano López written by Bridget María Chesterton and published by UNM Press. This book was released on 2013-10-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paraguay’s Chaco frontier, one of the least known areas in one of the least known countries in South America, became the unexpected scene of the bloodiest international war in the Americas, the Chaco War between Paraguay and Bolivia (1932–35). A picture postcard from the Chaco War era shows a large heart, emblazoned with the word “Paraguayo,” pumping its way through the flat dusty wilderness of the Chaco and leaving a zigzag trail of smashed Bolivian forts and soldiers along the way. This visual propaganda shows why the Paraguayans were sure they would win the war: they were brave, passionate soldiers. They considered themselves invincible descendants of the great hero of the War of the Triple Alliance (1864–70), Marshal Francisco Solano López (El Mariscal). But Solano López was not universally revered. A controversial figure, he was widely believed to have led Paraguay into economic, social, and cultural ruin. The debate over López’s actions shaped the country’s culture and politics for over a century after the War of the Triple Alliance. Bridget María Chesterton’s in-depth examination of Paraguay’s unique nationalism and the role of the frontier in its formation places the debate over López in the context of larger themes of Latin American history, including racial and ethnic identity, authoritarian regimes, and militarism.

Book Synopsis Francisco Solano López and the Ruination of Paraguay by : James Schofield Saeger
Download or read book Francisco Solano López and the Ruination of Paraguay written by James Schofield Saeger and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2007 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first serious biography of Francisco Solano L pez in English for decades, this richly researched book tells the dramatic story of Paraguay's most notorious ruler. Despite the heroic stature he gained after his death, L pez was a monumentally flawed leader who made the disastrous decisions in 1864 and 1865 to invade Paraguay's powerful neighbors, Brazil and Argentina, initiating the most devastating interstate conflict in South American history. Drawing on a trove of primary sources, James Schofield Saeger offers a critical analysis of L pez's personality and often-irrational persecution of enemies, adherents, and siblings. He traces L pez's preparation for high public office, work habits, control of his nation and army, propaganda, and execution. Concluding with an examination of L pez's posthumous rehabilitation, Saeger shows how the tyrant who ruined his nation became its most highly honored hero, crowning a campaign by revisionist publicists from 1870-1936, and a useful symbol for later authoritarians. Still largely unchallenged in Paraguay today, this glorification of a martial president is definitively put to rest in Saeger's meticulous study.
