Book excerpt: Excerpt from Soil Survey Around Imperial, Cal Farming in the desert to ordinary crops, fruit or alfalfa will be impossible on much of the land, and risky on all unless Special pre cautions are taken to prevent the rise of the alkali. Of the level lands only 1-7 per cent have less than per cent alkali, while 32 per cent have from to per cent. This 49 per cent of the area can be farmed to nearlv allorops as long as the accumulation of the alkali at the surface is prevented. The remainder of the land, or 51 per cent, will have to be farmed to alkali-resistant crops. Date palms, sorghum, sugar beets, and barley will likely be most successful. Even where farmed to these resistant crops the greatest precaution should be taken to prevent an accumulation of alkali at or near the surface. The claims for the fertility of this country are based upon the experience gained from irrigation along the Colorado River below Yuma. An examination of the country reveals the fact that the con ditions below Yuma are very different from those in the Imperial area, and the agriculture of the two areas is not comparable. The soils of the bottom lands below Yuma are lighter in texture, more pervious to water. Contain less alkali, and are, many of them, Well adapted to alfalfa.' Requests for this work showed a variety of special interests which would be served. The following request, transmitted by the Hon. J. C. Needham and indorsed by him, sets forth the conditions in the region: The peat soils, the adobe soils, and other characteristic soils around Stockton have never been studied in a scientific manner. The great Tokay belt of California is supposed to lie just north of Stockton. The limits of this area have never been determined. Vineyardists are experimenting every year, setting out Tokays and losing their investments from lack of knowledge of soil and climatic conditions, the very conditions that a soil survey would establish. I know of no one thing that would do more to build up this part of California than a soil survey. Not only would it help our own people, but it would attract to central California ruany people because of the facts that would be established. The making of this survey was also advocated by Senator George C. Perkins, and in compliance with these requests a survey of the Stockton area was made. The work in this area should form a basis for the further extension of the survey of the soils of this region, and it would seem advisable to continue the survey to cover the greater part of the Tokay grape region. I transmit herewith the map and report on the Stockton area, California, for publication as advance sheets of the Field Operations of the Bureau of Soils for 1905, as authorized by law.
