Book Synopsis Soil and Soil Fertility Management Research in Sub-Saharan Africa by : Henk Mutsaers
Download or read book Soil and Soil Fertility Management Research in Sub-Saharan Africa written by Henk Mutsaers and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Judicious soil fertility management is crucial for sustainable crop production and food security in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This book describes the various concepts and approaches underlying soil and soil fertility management research in SSA over the last fifty years. It provides examples of important innovations generated and assesses the position of research within the research-to-development continuum, including how innovations have been validated with the intended beneficiaries. Using the experience of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) as a case study, the authors analyse how processes, partnerships and other factors have affected research priorities, the delivery of outputs, and their uptake by farming communities in SSA. They evaluate both successes and failures of past investments in soil fertility research and important lessons learnt which provide crucial information for national and international scientists currently engaged in this research area. The book is organised in a number of chapters each covering a chronological period characterised by its primary research content and approaches and by the dominant research paradigms and delivery models.

Book Synopsis Towards Sustainable Food Production in Africa by : Morris Fanadzo
Download or read book Towards Sustainable Food Production in Africa written by Morris Fanadzo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book is focused on Sustainable Development Goal 2. It offers a comprehensive and topical collection of practices, technologies and innovations in the field of sustainable food production and security under a changing climate. It is a one-stop handbook for farmers, researchers, extensionists, policy makers and other stakeholders seeking to identify and disseminate best fit technologies for local and regional landscapes. It offers an understanding of the challenges, risks and uncertainties as well as opportunities to foster productive and sustainable food production. Smallholder farming and agriculture in general is facing a serious threat from climate change that has resulted in erratic and unpredictable rainfall and increased temperatures, among other abiotic stresses. These climate change induced pressures have reduced productivity mainly among the smallholder farmers, who are critical in driving the attainment of sustainable development goals like SDG 2, 12 and 13. The objective of the book is to document effective and practicable practices and technologies that can be adopted by smallholder African farmers as mitigation measures against the effects of climate change. This book is of interest to researchers, agricultural scientists, climate change scientists, capacity builders and policymakers.
Book Synopsis Fighting Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: The Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management by : Andre Bationo
Download or read book Fighting Poverty in Sub-Saharan Africa: The Multiple Roles of Legumes in Integrated Soil Fertility Management written by Andre Bationo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-24 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legumes play an important role in the cropping systems of sub Saharan Africa (SSA). Legumes are an important source of nutrition to both humans and livestock by providing the much needed protein, minerals, fibre and vitamins. The sale of legumes seed, leaves and fibre generates income for the marginalized communities especially women. Cultivation of legumes is essential for the regeneration of nutrient-deficient soils. By biologically fixing nitrogen (BNF) in the soil, legumes provide a relatively low-cost method of replacing otherwise expensive inorganic nitrogen in the soil. This enhances soil fertility and boosts subsequent cereal crop yields. Production of legumes in SSA is however; hampered by a number of constraints among them low and declining soil fertility, low soil pH, high salinity, drought and flooding, poor access to improved germplasm, diseases, pests and weeds. Farmers need to learn how to overcome these constraints if the full benefits of legumes are to be gained. This book presents a synthesis of research work on legumes and draws attention to the importance of legumes in integrated soil fertility management (ISFM) and poverty alleviation in SSA.

Book Synopsis Agrarian Science for Sustainable Resource Management in Sub-Saharan Africa by : George Ouma
Download or read book Agrarian Science for Sustainable Resource Management in Sub-Saharan Africa written by George Ouma and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2009 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The livelihood of the world's population depends mostly on natural resources: land, forest, water and the air we breath. The continual degradation and diminution of these resources due to the cultivation of land threatens the economic and social security of individuals, communities and countries as well as the intricate web of ecological, social, economic and cultural relations that bind the global community together. To be productive, our resources must be managed properly, enriched and harvested responsibly.

Book Synopsis Pulse crops for sustainable farms in sub-Saharan Africa by : Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations
Download or read book Pulse crops for sustainable farms in sub-Saharan Africa written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2018-05-22 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulses have a long history in sub-Saharan Africa due to their multiple benefits. Pulses, and legumes in general, can play an important role in agriculture because of their ability to biologically fix atmospheric nitrogen and to enhance the biological turnover of phosphorus; thus they could become the cornerstone of sustainable agriculture in Africa. In this sense, there is a body of literature that points to diversification of existing production systems – particularly legumes species, which provide critical environmental services, including soil erosion control and soil nutrient recapitalization. This publication is a review of some of the promising strategies to support the cultivation and utilization of pulses on smallholder farms in sub-Saharan Africa. The review is part of the legacy of the International Year of Pulses (IYP), which sought to recognize the contribution that pulses make to human well-being and the environment.
Book Synopsis Sustainable Intensification to Advance Food Security and Enhance Climate Resilience in Africa by : Rattan Lal
Download or read book Sustainable Intensification to Advance Food Security and Enhance Climate Resilience in Africa written by Rattan Lal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-10-10 with total page 665 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 32-chapter volume represents the core of several oral and poster presentations made at the conference. In addition to Introduction and Conclusion sections, the book is thematically divided into 7 sections, namely, 1) Land Use and Farming Systems, 2) Effects of Climate Change on Crop Yield, 3) Soil Nutrient and Water Management for Carbon Sequestration, 4) Rehabilitation of Degraded Lands through Forestry and Agroforestry, 5) Management of Animal Production for Greenhouse Gas Emissions, 6) Smallholder Adaptation to Climate Change, and 7) Economic, Social and Policy Issues. It addresses these themes in the context of sustainable intensification (SI). It implies increasing agronomic production from the existing land while improving/restoring its quality and decreasing the C or environmental footprint. Simply put, SI means producing more from less.
