Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soft Hunger is a beautiful collection of poetry that treads the delicate line between intimate and public, between talking to oneself and talking to a crowd. Pain, loss, heartbreak, depression and, above all else, always, the crowning glory of existence: love - these are the core themes you will find in this collection. But also the struggle of being part of a so-called minority, the pride in finally finding and being comfortable with one’s own identity, the compelling need to change the world and the audacity to try and do that through words. Through a continuous movement between the inside and the outside, the soft-spoken and the screamed, the obvious and the implied, this collection of poetry takes the reader into the intricacies of feelings, offering raw honesty, brutal emotion and the reassurance that no one is alone, we’re all human after all.

Book excerpt: The global obesity epidemic is arguably the most serious health issue facing the food industry today. Food manufacturers are under increasing pressure over both the degree to which they are seen as contributing to the problem, and the role they should play in solving it. Drawing on the expertise of many of the world's leading experts in this area, Food, diet and obesity summarises the key research on the links between obesity and diet. Topics discussed include trends in obesity, the evidence behind popular diets and meal replacers, the effectiveness of fat and sugar replacers in food, emerging issues such as the value of the glycemic index, protein content and calcium in weight control, and potential functional food targets and ingredients for weight control. After an introductory chapter on global trends in obesity, part one looks at the range of contributing factors to obesity, from nutrient-gene interactions, energy metabolism and physical activity to sensory responses to food, portion size and the psychology of overeating. Part two looks at macronutrients and their role in weight gain or loss, with chapters on topics such as energy density, dietary fat, carbohydrates, protein and dietary fibre. The final part of the book discusses issues in developing effective strategies for weight control, from gaining consumer acceptance of weight-control food products, through functional food ingredients, to community-based public health approaches in preventing obesity. With its distinguished editor and contributors, Food, diet and obesity is a standard work for health professionals, nutritionists and R&D staff throughout the food industry, as well as all those concerned with understanding and reducing obesity. - Summarises key research which links diet and obesity - Trends in obesity are examined - Contributory factors to obesity are investigated, including lifestyle and genetics

Soft computing methods - including fuzzy systems, neural networks, evolutionary computing and probabilistic reasoning - are state-of-the-art methods in theory formation and model construction. The powerful application areas of these methods in the human sciences are demonstrated, including the replacement of statistical models by simpler numerical or linguistic soft computing models and the use of computer simulations with approximate and linguistic constituents. "Dr. Niskanen's work opens new vistas in application of soft computing, fuzzy logic and fuzzy set theory to the human sciences. This book is likely to be viewed in retrospect as a landmark in its field" (Lotfi A. Zadeh, Berkeley)

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered how you might carve more meaning and purpose out of your crowded days? The answer is simple: cut out the "soft addictions." As Judith Wright reveals in this revised and expanded edition of her classic self-help book There Must Be More Than This, many of us are addicted to seemingly harmless and socially sanctioned habits such as shopping, watching TV, and gossiping-robbing us of our time, clouding our clarity of mind, and masking our deeper longing for lasting joy. According to Wright, soft addictions are seductive because they satisfy powerful desires-and we easily become hooked because they are perceived as "normal" behavior, behavior that doesn't seem to demand the extraordinary measures of a drug or alcohol addiction. Yet soft addictions do call out for action and in this groundbreaking book, Judith Wright explains why they are so damaging and outlines an effective plan for overcoming these negative habits to discover more passion, love, commitment, and meaning in our lives.

Book excerpt: Politics of Soft Power Diplomacy and its Reponses is the outcome of Seminar Series at Mt Everest College, Senapati (Manipur) for the past more than half dozen decade of continual effort, sustained by loving promotion and encouragement received from reputed ICSSR and UGC in granting Seminar grant to me as convener of this series. The book covers wide ranges of inclusion and exclusion in accessing mainstream projects and government programmes which are dealt and discussed here by different contributors of papers from various academic disciplines. It is felt that Soft Power Diplomacy is very instrumental in shaping the image of a country abroad. Joseph Nye coined the term and domestic policies are as important as foreign polices. Classical Realists too have informed consent on the similar understanding of domestic domain having ramification on foreign policies for a country. The author/editor of this book feels that the work will contribute in its bit to researches and analyses and expected that the gap in formulating the issues pertaining to the marginalized and suppressed groups in policy formulation and implementation can be further carried in future. I always said that soft corner given to minorities and dominated section in any given group/society is pre-requisite to development of the country. If in a given country, only the the majority rules, then that country would never be called a pluralistic and cosmopolitan approach in its shape of designing the structure of its government and governance. Besides, the author/editor also has no doubt that such studies as this will be of special interest to academicians, policy makers, policy implementers, legal practitioners, politicians, activists, students, and public at large. As issues discussed here are all Soft Power Diplomacy domain that pertain to flexible and diversified components that are most required to address the grievances of the discriminated and dominated lots in the society.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can certain foods hijack the brain in ways similar to drugs and alcohol, and is this effect sufficiently strong to contribute to major diseases such as obesity, diabetes, and heart disease, and hence constitute a public health menace? Terms like "chocoholic" and "food addict" are part of popular lore, some popular diet books discuss the concept of addiction, and there are food addiction programs with names like Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous. Clinicians who work with patients often hear the language of addiction when individuals speak of irresistible cravings, withdrawal symptoms when starting a diet, and increasing intake of palatable foods over time. But what does science show, and how strong is the evidence that food and addiction is a real and important phenomenon? Food and Addiction: A Comprehensive Handbook brings scientific order to the issue of food and addiction, spanning multiple disciplines to create the foundation for what is a rapidly advancing field and to highlight needed advances in science and public policy. The book assembles leading scientists and policy makers from fields such as nutrition, addiction, psychology, epidemiology, and public health to explore and analyze the scientific evidence for the addictive properties of food. It provides complete and comprehensive coverage of all subjects pertinent to food and addiction, from basic background information on topics such as food intake, metabolism, and environmental risk factors for obesity, to diagnostic criteria for food addiction, the evolutionary and developmental bases of eating addictions, and behavioral and pharmacologic interventions, to the clinical, public health, and legal and policy implications of recognizing the validity of food addiction. Each chapter reviews the available science and notes needed scientific advances in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the formative years of the Cold War from 1943 to 1957, Patryk Babiracki reveals little-known Soviet efforts to build a postwar East European empire through culture. Babiracki argues that the Soviets involved in foreign cultural outreach tried to use "soft power" in order to galvanize broad support for the postwar order in the emerging Soviet bloc. Populated with compelling characters ranging from artists, writers, journalists, and scientists to party and government functionaries, this work illuminates the behind-the-scenes schemes of the Stalinist international propaganda machine. Based on exhaustive research in Russian and Polish archives, Babiracki's study is the first in any language to examine the two-way interactions between Soviet and Polish propagandists and to evaluate their attempts at cultural cooperation. Babiracki shows that the Stalinist system ultimately undermined Soviet efforts to secure popular legitimacy abroad through persuasive propaganda. He also highlights the limitations and contradictions of Soviet international cultural outreach, which help explain why the Soviet empire in Eastern Europe crumbled so easily after less than a half-century of existence.
