Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor K.S. Chalam is a economist, specializing in economics of education, political economy, public economics, and Dravidian studies. He is one of the few economists who has widely written about education and the disprivileged in India - an issue that has re-emerged and has been intensely debated in recent years. Chalam has pioneered some innovative ideas in his interdisciplinary studies when there were very few serious works drawing from India's history, economics, education, sociology, and related disciplines. This festschrift - in honor of Professor K.S. Chalam - examines four states of southern India. The book focuses on the history and socio-economic transformation of marginal communities or disprivileged groups - Dalits, tribes, and other occupational communities - and reflects on economic development and the process of social change. The essays in Perspectives on Economic Development and Social Change incorporate many of Chalam's cherished ideas.

It means migration of rural poor to urban areas is the main cause for urban poverty. Similarly this study explained the fact that incidence of poverty among agricultural labour is highest at 57 per cent who accounts to 80 per cent of rural labour force. Further, the study brought fourth the fact that the number of poor in India has increased from 177 million in 1960-61 to 216 million in 1967-68 inspite of India's planned efforts to promote living conditions of our population.

Book excerpt: The socioeconomic, health, and public-policy aspects of aging in India are presented in this study that draws on empirical research to assess the country’s preparedness. This analysis argues that many of the fundamental issues that need to be addressed by a country with a large aging population are not fully understood by public agencies. A number of policy options for the welfare of the growing number of elderly, particularly women, are proposed.
