Book excerpt: The study analysed the social and economic factors affecting the decision to participate in farm forestry by farmers in the Sahelian environment of Borno State, Nigeria. The specific objectives were to: analyse the social factors influencing the decision to participate in farm forestry among the respondents; examine the economic factors influencing the decision to participate in farm forestry among the respondents; identify the possible reasons (if any) for participation in farm forestry among the respondents; determine the perceived effects of farm forestry on livelihoods among the respondents; and investigate the constraints affecting the decision to participate in forestry among the respondents. Interview schedules were administered to 168 respondents which were analysed using descriptive (frequency distribution and rank order) and inferential (chi-square test) statistics. The study revealed that among the social characteristics of the respondents, age (X2=13.264; P ≤ 0.05) and household size (X2 = 11.344; P≤0.05) were statistically significant. The result also, indicated that all the economic characteristics; Farm size (X2=9.862; P≤0.05), Land Ownership (X2=7.269; P≤0.05), Educational Level (X2=16.723; P≤0.05) and Non Farm Income (X2= 18.236; P≤0.05) were statistically significant. The most important reasons for participation in farm forestry include the need for fuel wood (41.67%) and increased agricultural productivity (40.48%) of the respondents. The respondents had an agreed (mean score= 3.60) perception on the benefits of farm forestry. The major constraints affecting the decision to participate in farm forestry were lack of access to agricultural credit, followed by livestock browsing and incidence of bush fire. Policy recommendations were suggested to include the development of programmes to aid farming households to participate in farm forestry with increased access to credits and extension services coupled with vigorously pursued policy regulations on the environment.

The general objective of this study is to assess the effect of population growth on forest resource in East Wollega Zone in general and Haro Limu woreda in particular. The data used for the study were collected from 89 farm households heads drawn from the four kebeles of Haro Limmu district. Probability proportional to size sampling technique was employed to select the farm households from four peasant associations, which were selected by random sampling techniques. Primary data were collected using a structured questionnaire. In addition, secondary data were extracted from relevant sources to supplement the data obtained from the survey. The result of this study reveals that population growth huge impact on forestry development in the ways of expanding agricultural land, using wood as energy sources and satisfying the input requirements in agricultural activity. Respondents use family planning services in reducing the impact of population growth on the forestry development

By translating the ecological benefits of afforestation into economic terms, the author demonstrates how investments that benefit the environment often benefit the economy as well. Both the traditional work of the forestry services and tree plantings by farmers are needed, says the author, if deforestation is to be halted and reversed. With special refrence to Africa, he discusses the underlying reasons for deforestation, suggests policy changes to promote the planting and care of trees, and identifies issues for social and scientific research. A case study of the arid zone of northern Nigeria illustrates the benefits that could be brought about by establishing windbreaks and encouraging farmers to plant trees. Besides preventing soil erosion, improving soil fertility, and thus increasing crop prodution, trees provide fruit, livestock fodder, and much-needed fuelwood and building materials. The author compares the increase in farm incomes as a result of an afforestation program with the decrease in incomes if deforestation and soil erosion were to continue. The analysis will be of special interest to those concerned with agriculture, forestry, rural development, and environmental issues in developing countries.
