Book excerpt: Education is the most important tool for empowerment and a means to achieve better standard of living, employment increases productivity and quality of life and health indicates the well being of a human being along with contributing to his/her productivity. These three factors present the socioeconomic status. The Scheduled Caste (SC) population of India (16.8%- Census 2011) has had a history of being excluded from basic rights which had an adverse effect on their socio-economic development. Inclusion of SCs has always been important from the point of view of the policymakers too, (The motto of the 11th five year plan). Many other policies have been formulated for the socioeconomic development of the SCs and many are directed solely towards the improvement of their educational, employment and health levels. Hence, it is crucial to assess the development levels of the SCs. Many other factors determine the socio-economic level of the SCs but education, employment and health are the main focus of this paper. This paper throws light on the educational, employment and health status of the SCs and compares it with that of the total population in India since around 2000-01 to 2014-15. The Scheduled Caste SubPlan and some centrally sponsored policies are also analysed to know the amount allocated for the inclusion of the SCs.

Book excerpt: Since India's independence, socio-economic development and the protection of scheduled castes (SCs) from discrimination and exploitation has been a high priority area for the country. The SCs have been socially ostracized, economically exploited, and denied human dignity and a sense of self-worth. According to the 2011 Census, SCs constituted 16.9% of the Indian population. And, sadly, women belonging to SCs are in a far worse situation by all development indicators. Poverty and deprivation affect them more adversely. And yet, despite of their adverse conditions, they contribute significantly to the sustenance and growth of the production system of the country. The development and empowerment of SCs is a commitment enshrined in India's constitution. This is to be done by ensuring equal rights, access to benefits and resources, and empowerment to enable SCs to develop their potential and capacity as agents of social change, through the process of planned development. Planning in recent years has seen a visible shift in focus from the mere expansion of the production of goods and services - and the consequent growth of per capita income - to planning for the enhancement of human well-being. This book examines the problems and constraints of the SCs population. The various measures adopted to ameliorate their socio-economic conditions are also discussed. Book Synopsis Economic Development and Dalit Agricultural Workers by : L. C. Mallaiah
Download or read book Economic Development and Dalit Agricultural Workers written by L. C. Mallaiah and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Socio-economic conditions of Dalit agricultural workers and their participation and contribution for economic development. After 1980's mant changes have taken place in the indian economy. As a result economic growth rate increased. Despite high economic growth and agricultural performance, the population of the scheduled castes and tribes could not get the fruits of high economic growth and benefits of globalisation. In th process of globalisation the rich are becoming richer and poor becoming poorer. The poverty rations have been significantly higher than for the rest of the population and the proportion of the poor in the country belonging to the SCs and STs increased. This book will see as to why the scheduled castes and scheduled tribes could not utilize the opportunity vis-a vis the non-scheduled castes and are remaining as agricultural labourers and other traditional occupants living below poverty line. Hence migration, unemployment, dropout rate in the schools, poverty and social exclusion are taken momentum among Dalits. This book will analyse the pattern of occupational distribution of dalits, access to land, agricultural workers, poverty and rural development programes and dalits participation. This book concludes that dalits should be included in the process of economic planning and policy implementation. Moreover the dalits should take active participation in the developmental activities. Inclusive economic growth may give good hope for dalits.
