Book excerpt: Cal Torncek is the lawyer appointed to represent Victoria Frankel, a young woman accused of using a "lethal cocktail" of birth control pills-a chemical assault-to kill her viable fetus. Torncek has the support of a loving wife and their five children, along with the support of his law partners, Grace Radmond and Mike Baptise. But, due to his fragile health, he needs all the help he can get with the case. If the case is lost, the setback could allow the State to infringe upon women's rights in other ways. It has the possibility to set the ultimate precedent. While fighting for Frankel's rights and her acquittal, Torncek must protect her from an arrogant prosecutor and an obnoxious trial judge. But two questions remain: is Victoria guilty of feticide, or is she well within her rights as a woman? Author James G. Tomka asserts that the Roman Catholic Church is partially responsible for the right-to-privacy decision of Roe v. Wade. But the main case leading up to Roe was Pierce v. Society of the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary. In the powerful and persuasive Society of Sisters, actual law from this specific case, and others, is applied to the fictional prosecution of a self-induced abortion.

When Trick, Ace, Pepper, and Sugar meet during group counseling, they form a sisterhood and decide to take justice into their own hands. Their time spent in group counseling listening to the same sad, sick stories proved that the justice system was a fucked-up system. It continued to fail women and children time and time again. If the justice system couldn't bring justice, the sisters would. The sisters vow to avenge those that cannot avenge themselves and soon discover that they are capable of heinous acts never thought possible. When Trick is caught red-handed after a kill by the chief of police, she is forced to obey the chief's every command or be arrested for murder. Her arrest would lead to the downfall of the secret society she's formed with her sisters. Trick is conflicted over whether she should risk it all by getting even with the chief or sacrifice her mind, body, and soul for women who have become her family and a cause that has become her life's mission?

Book excerpt: After the death of its founder in 1865, the Society of the Sacred Heart experienced exceptional recruitment and expansion, and departure from France of more than 2500 religious at the beginning of the century. Its story is that of the thousands of women who joined it to root their lives in its charism. In the forty countries where they have been sent, they have had to confront liberalism and anti-clericalism, revolution, the effects of Nazism and Marxism and world wars that destroyed their houses and scattered their members. After the Second Vatican Council, the elimination of cloister opened new fields of apostolic work to the Society. This book shows how the congregation developed amid internal crises, which did not differ from those in the Church and civil society, and how from these crises there emerged little by little a new way to be a Religious of the Sacred Heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional Micronesian Societies explores the extraordinary successes of the ancient voyaging peoples who first settled the Central Pacific islands some two thousand years ago. They and their descendants devised social and cultural adaptations that have enabled them to survive—and thrive—under the most demanding environmental conditions. The dispersed matrilineal clans so typical of Micronesian societies ensure that every individual, every local family and lineage, and every community maintain close relations with the peoples of many other islands. When hurricanes and droughts or political struggles force a group to move, they are sure of being taken in by kin residing elsewhere. Out of this common theme, shared patterns of land tenure, political rule, philosophy, and even personal character have flowed. To describe and explain Micronesian societies, the author begins with an overview of the region, including a brief consideration of the scholarly debate about whether Micronesia actually exists as a genuine and meaningful region. This is followed by an account of how Micronesia was originally settled, how its peoples adapted to conditions there, and how several basic adaptations diffused throughout the islands. He then considers the fundamental matters of descent (ideas about how individuals and groups are bound together through ties of kinship) and descent groups and the closely interlinked subjects of households, families, land, and labor. Because women form the core of the clans, their roles are particularly respected and their contributions to social life honored. Socio-political life, art, religion, and values are discussed in detail. Finally, the author examines a number of exceptions to these common Micronesian patterns of social life. Traditional Micronesian Societies illustrates the idiosyncrasies of individual Micronesian communities and celebrates the Micronesians’ shared ability to adapt, survive, and thrive over millennia. At a time when global climate change has seized our imaginations, the Micronesians’ historical ability to cope with their watery environment is of the greatest relevance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of ancient law has blossomed in recent years. In English alone there have been dozens of studies devoted to classical Greek and Roman law, to the Roman legal codes, and to the legal traditions of the ancient Near East among many other topics. Legal documents written on papyrus began to be published in some abundance by the end of the nineteenth century; but even after substantial publication history, legal papyri have not received due attention from legal historians. This book blends the two usually distinct juristic scholarly traditions, classical and Egyptological, into a coherent presentation of the legal documents from Egypt from the Ptolemaic to the late Byzantine periods, all translated and accompanied by expert commentary. The volume will serve as an introduction to the rich legal sources from Egypt in the later phases of its ancient history as well as a tool to compare legal documents from other cultures.
