Book excerpt: 'Please send snaps of my dear mother and father, my sisters Sarah and Evelyn, and my bonzer little poddy calf, Zeus.' It's 1917, three years into the Great War, when Edie takes up a teaching post in the small Australian town of York. Mourning the loss of her beloved brother on the Front and evading her father's plans for a respectable marriage, she's glad to keep busy teaching at Miss Raison's School for Girls. After a little persuasion, Edie agrees to take part in a comfort scheme sending photos of home to the troops. Edie's new venture throws her into the path of the family secrets, scandals and class complexities of her new town – and a handsome, exasperating man her father would never approve of. With each new encounter, her world gets bigger and more complex, until Edie's asked to make choices that could turn her cautious life upside down – and change the very course of history. Drawn from the true stories of Australians during WW1, this is historical fiction at its best. Charming and heartfelt, Snapshots from Home is perfect for fans of Fiona McIntosh, Joy Rhoades and anyone who loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society.
Book Synopsis Snapshots: An X-ray of Cameroons Democracy, Governance and Unification by : Sam-Nuvala Fonkem

This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s and 1970s, Third World governments prescribed and imposed a certain kind of journalism variously called objective journalism or development journalism. They understood this as journalism restricted to reporting facts as dished out by their propagandists and did not tolerate the questioning of government policy. By development journalism, they meant the mere reporting of government efforts to provide services, amenities and infrastructures and the singing of praises anytime a bridge was inaugurated, irrespective of whether it was well-built or whether the contract to build was awarded according to the norms of transparency and probity. This one-sided journalism was prevalent especially in state-owned media and media practitioners in the few private news publications that existed who did not toe the line were subjected to constant harassment and incarceration. However, with the coming of well-trained journalism graduates into the scene in the 1970s and the advent of global liberalization in the late 1980s and 1990s, daring journalists like Sam-Nuvala Fonkem thought it was time to take the bull by the horn and start taking a more critical look at government pronouncements, matching policy statements with real action in the field; in short, moving from objective journalism to interpretative and investigative journalism. This collection of Sam-Nuvala Fonkems writings is a sampling of the fruit of that new spirit to dare where angels hitherto feared to tread, to hold public officials to account and to expose the falsehood cached behind the political masquerade of the ruling class.

Download or read book Ettie written by Richard Davenport-Hines and published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson. This book was released on 2012-11-15 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The life of Lady Desborough - beautiful heiress, aristocratic hostess, unfaithful wife, tragic mother, Edwardian icon. Born in 1867 and orphaned at three, Ettie Fane was brought up by a beloved grandmother and then two adoring, almost incestuous, bachelor uncles. At twenty she married Willy Grenfell, later Lord Desborough. Beautiful, rich, charming and clever, Ettie soon became a leading hostess at the two magnificent country houses she had inherited. Leading politicians, writers and artists were very much part of her circle. But there was a dark side too, as this book will reveal. Ettie could be manipulative and cruel. Her eldest son Julian, after a nervous breakdown at Oxford, rejected her world and values. Nemesis and tragedy were not far away. In 1915 Julian died of war wounds. Six weeks later her second son Billy was killed in action. Her youngest son Ivo would be killed shortly after the war. But despite intense private misery, she reacted with outward courage and self-mastery. Grief revealed the greatness of her spirit. In the 1920s and 1930s she continued to collect new types, especially gifted young men, relishing people of all ages up to her death in 1952, a redoutable survivor from a vanished age.
