Book Synopsis Parenting Beliefs, Behaviors, and Parent-Child Relations by : Kenneth H. Rubin
Download or read book Parenting Beliefs, Behaviors, and Parent-Child Relations written by Kenneth H. Rubin and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book, is to present a rather simple argument. Parents' thoughts about childrearing and the ways in which they interact with children to achieve particular parenting or developmental goals, are culturally determined. Within any culture, children are shaped by the physical and social settings within which they live, culturally regulated customs and childrearing practices, and culturally based belief systems. The psychological "meaning" attributed to any given social behavior is, in large part, a function of the ecological niche within which it is produced. Clearly, it is the case that there are some cultural universals. All parents want their children to be healthy and to feel secure. However, "healthy" and "unhealthy," at least in the psychological sense of the term, can have different meanings from culture to culture.
Book Synopsis Children and Childhood in World Religions by : Don S. Browning
Download or read book Children and Childhood in World Religions written by Don S. Browning and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-14 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While children figure prominently in religious traditions, few books have directly explored the complex relationships between children and religion. This is the first book to examine the theme of children in major religions of the world. Each of six chapters, edited by world-class scholars, focuses on one religious tradition and includes an introduction and a selection of primary texts ranging from legal to liturgical and from the ancient to the contemporary. Through both the scholarly introductions and the primary sources, this comprehensive volume addresses a range of topics, from the sanctity of birth to a child's relationship to evil, showing that issues regarding children are central to understanding world religions and raising significant questions about our own conceptions of children today.

Book Synopsis PRIMARY SOCIALISATION PATTERN by : Dr. Sheeba Khalid
Download or read book PRIMARY SOCIALISATION PATTERN written by Dr. Sheeba Khalid and published by Ashok Yakkaldevi. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Socialisation is the process by which the new born child is moulded into the culture of his group and there by becomes an accepted member of the society. In any particular culture, it is through the process of socialisation that the child acquires the attitudes and values of that culture and develops into an individual with culturally appropriate behaviours patterns. The life style that the individual adopts and his personality are largely a matter of the socialisation practices prevalent in a culture. As such, socialisation is a mechanism of culture transmission. But at the same time, it is also an aspect of the culture. The kind of child-rearing practices which are adopted by the parents are along the norms prevalent in the culture in which the child is born, and the roles that the child is expected to adopt and the pattern of his interactions with the adults and peers are also prescribed by the culture. There are four important agencies of socialisation of the children: the family, the peer group, the school and the community. Socialisation takes place not only at the early age of the child but also during the subsequent growth into youth and adulthood. In a sense it is continuous process.

Book Synopsis The Social Self by : Robert C. Ziller
Download or read book The Social Self written by Robert C. Ziller and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Social Self is a multifaceted analysis of the self concept based on the social nature of the self. The emphasis is on self-esteem along with self-centrality, self-complexity, social interest, identification, power, marginality, openness, and majority identification. The book relies on an approach based upon non-verbal measures of the self concept and in which the individual is asked to locate himself in relation to a field of significant others, represented in a variety of geometric arrangements using symbols of the self and others. Comprised of nine chapters, this book begins with a description of some of the basic components of the self system including self-esteem, social interest, and marginality. The discussion moves toward more complex analyses including the alienation syndrome and the political personality involving two or more of the components of the social self. The next section focuses on the development of the self concept and examines such variables as socioeconomic background and the history of geographic mobility of the child. A theory of self-other orientation is also considered, along with a helical theory of personal change. This monograph is intended for students of social psychology, personality, sociology, and education who are interested in the self concept, its measurement, and theoretical considerations.
Book Synopsis Social Influences and Socialization in Infancy by : S. Feinman
Download or read book Social Influences and Socialization in Infancy written by S. Feinman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How are we to understand the complex forces that shape human behav ior? A variety of diverse perspectives, drawing on studies of human behavioral ontogeny, as well as humanity's evolutionary heritage, seem to provide the best likelihood of success. It is in an attempt to synthesize such potentially disparate approaches to human development into an integrated whole that we undertake this series on the genesis of beh- ior. In many respects, the incredible burgeoning of research in child development over the last two decades or so seems like a thousand lines of inquiry spreading outward in an incoherent starburst of effort. The need exists to provide, on an ongoing basis, an arena of discourse within which the threads of continuity among those diverse lines of research on human development can be woven into a fabric of meaning and under standing. Scientists, scholars, and those who attempt to translate their efforts into the practical realities of the care and guidance of infants and children are the audience that we seek to reach. Each requires the oppor tunity to see-to the degree that our knowledge in given areas per mits-various aspects of development in a coherent, integrated fashion. It is hoped that this series-which brings together research on infant biology, developing infant capacities, animal models, and impact of so cial, cultural, and familial forces on development, and the distorted products of such forces under certain circumstances-serves these important social and scientific needs.
