Book Synopsis Marxism & Australian Socialism Before the Bolshevik Revolution by : David W. Lovell
Download or read book Marxism & Australian Socialism Before the Bolshevik Revolution written by David W. Lovell and published by Australian Scholary Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures the experience of pre-Revolution socialism half a world away from its origins and before the pressures of a Soviet, socialist orthodoxy. It focuses on a time when Marx was respected, not worshipped. It was also a time when socialisms were coloured by indigenous political and social traditions - when the Eureka Rebellion on the goldfields of Ballarat and early voting rights for Australian women made international headlines. This book examines how Marx's ideas arrived in Australia, often via other, more accessible proponents of socialism such as textile designer William Morris. It also considers the wide variety of contemporary responses to the socialist doctrine from both its supporters - including utopianist William Lane, activist Tom Mann, reformist J.C. Watson and the anarchists of the IWW - as well as its detractors. Among the latter were middle-class Fabians Sidney and Beatrice Webb, who disparaged the rough-and-readiness of the antipodean comrades. Historian W.K. Hancock went so far as to declare Australian socialism as 'fraudulent'. Yet political historian Dr. David Lovell makes the case that if Australia was not a 'workingman's paradise', it was certainly more than 'just another capitalist country'.

Book Synopsis Australian Socialism by : A. St. Ledger
Download or read book Australian Socialism written by A. St. Ledger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australian Socialism: An Historical Sketch of Its Origin and Developments The Imperial Parliament will no doubt be called upon soon to initiate some of the legislation which has been enacted in Australia for the purpose of promo ting or controlling industries. This work shows that neither our Parliaments nor any other Parliament has sufficient data yet to determine clearly whether or not this legislation has benefited or injured the worker. It must be borne in mind that the regulation of factories and shops is a branch of legislation entirely distinct from the economic issues involved in the control or State regulation of industries. The former, including the suppression of sweating, is solely humani tarian; the latter is solely economic, and sooner or later must conform to the law of supply and demand, and the economic limitations of a country's resources. Download or read book In Our Time written by Verity Burgmann and published by Allen & Unwin. This book was released on 1985-01-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many Australian working men and women in the closing days of the nineteenth century, SOCIALISM IN OUR TIME was no mere slogan. The deepening economic depression cut living standards, increased class conflict and tested the newborn trade unions to breaking point. In this climate, the message of socialist agitators made sense of the experience of the most vulnerable: capitalism was doomed, socialism was not only inevitable, it was imminent. This is the story of a crucial time in the political history of Australia, told from the perspective of the agitators and their followers. By uncovering, state by state, the hitherto ignored faith and work of the 'tribunes of the people' and the organisations created by their working-class supporters, In Our Time challenges the accepted versions of the social and political ferment which gave rise to the labour movement and its parliamentary expression, the Labor parties.
