Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Agriculture He was now a most popular man; his reputation for philanthropy commanded universal sympathy; the views he had recently propounded were regarded as the excited dreams of an amiable enthusiast; his plans tickled the imagination, where they did not command the judgment. The press was highly eulo gistic, and for good reason, - Mr. Owen purchased copies of the principal papers, containing his letters or speeches, and distributed them at his own expense throughout the country. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socialism and Agriculture My object in this paper is simply to describe the economic conditions of a single country parish, here in England, and from the consideration of these conditions to draw some inferences towards our future policy with regard to the land. In modern life - in every department of it, one may say - bedrock facts are so veiled over by complex and adventitious growths that it is difficult to see the proper and original outline of any problem with which we are dealing; and so it certainly is in this matter of the land question. Any one glancing at a country village, say in the neighbourhood of London, probably sees a mass of villas, people hurrying to a railway station, motor-cars, and so forth; but as to where the agricultural workers are, what they are doing, how they live, what their relations may be to the land and the land owners -these things are obscure, not easily seen, and difficult to get information about. And yet these are the things, one may say, which are most vital, most important. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road Ahead: A Primer of Capitalism and Socialism A Brilliant American editor has recently written that a period of great change in this country "is not only indicated; it is certain." We in America will soon find ourselves "in one of the great periods of reorganization and pioneering." Other countries have already entered that era. The old generations of Americans have given little attention to social pioneering. They have sought to build up the nation's power to produce and have let it go at that. On the question of distribution they have adopted a policy of drift. Many of these problems will be left for solution to the generation of boys and girls, young men and women, now in the schools and colleges of the country. This generation should begin now to prepare themselves for the great task ahead. This little primer is a modest attempt to help them to make a start in that preparation. It was written chiefly for boys and girls from the seventh to the tenth grades, the higher grades in grammar schools and the lower grades in high schools. It is hoped, however, that interest will not be confined to these groups. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is the fruits of more than four years of unprecedented capitalist crisis. This crisis period is approximately the period between our Seventh and Eighth National Conventions. Through this period capitalist society has continuously disintegrated. The crisis has penetrated into and undermined the industry and agriculture of every capitalist and colo nial country; it has upset the currency and credit relationships of the entire world. Even the United States, still the strongest fortress of world capitalism, has been stripped of its last shred of exceptional ism, stands fully exposed to the fury of the storms of crisis, and, relatively speaking, is registering its deepest effects. The economic losses due to the crisis, in the United States alone begin to approach the figures of the total losses of the World War. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Poor-Law and the New Socialism: Or Pauperism and Taxation I have been requested to state in a few words why it has been thought important that the Cobden Club should bring into general notice the gist and substance of the Report of the Poor Law Commissioners of 1832, upon which our present Poor Law is founded. Few now alive remember the frightful state of the agricultural districts of England which that report dis closed; and it is evident, from various proposals now made for the benefit of the poor, that many of its lessons have been forgotten even by our statesmen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Socialism: An Impartial Inquiry The present book occupies, so far as I am aware, new ground among English books on Socialism. The larger historical books on the subject stop short of recent years, and leave unchronicled much Socialist thought and action of the utmost importance. My aim has been to give as briefly and fairly as possible an account of the Socialist movement over the world during the last ten years. Like everything else, Socialism has undergone a process of change, and must be studied in the works of its latest authorities. Extreme utterances of individuals have been largely disregarded. In such a movement as Socialism much exaggeration was inevitable. But Socialism has its great thinkers and students, men as candid, as thoughtful, and as earnest as any to be found in other camps. These thinkers are constructive as well as destructive. They are not afraid to acknowledge the immense difficulties that have to be conquered ere the goal is reached, and they have taken them up in earnest, admitting in many cases that they are not yet completely solved. That Socialism is a movement full of mighty import to mankind, and that the questions which it raises may at any moment present themselves in their most practical form, is now obvious to all. It is only by understanding what Socialists ask for, and why they ask it, by studying their views and arguments in their best, most considered and most impressive form that any fruitful discussion can be carried on. It is in this spirit that I have endeavoured to set forth the main points in the recent literature of Socialism. The chief books published on the Continent as well as the English literature of the subject have been thoroughly examined, and every effort has been made to secure a just and accurate account of the main issues. The periodical literature of Socialism has also been investigated to the best of my ability. It is so extensive that an absolutely complete knowledge is unattainable, but I hope that few important omissions will be found. In the Supplement I have given chapters on Revolutionary Syndicalism; Recent Developments of American Socialism; and Notes on Australian Socialism.
