Book excerpt: Research in Social Stratification and Mobility continues its tradition of publishing the best and most innovative research on the changing landscape of social inequality the world over. This issue focuses on different dimensions of social closure and their relationship to social inequality processes, including the changing role that education plays in sorting people into favorable and unfavorable labor market positions across a global diversity of cultural settings. This issue also examines the fluid boundaries of race and ethnicity in contentious political settings, relationships between attitudes and collective action, and the role that technology and political context plays in promoting economic development and well-being. These topics and the research methodologies they represent display the vitality of social science research dealing with social stratification and the wide array of methods, contexts, and policies that directly affect the life chances of most of the world's peoples. This issue also marks a continuation of the ties developed between RSSM and the Social Stratification and Mobility section of the International Sociological Association (RC-28). This collaboration promises to promote and disseminate social inequality research throughout the world through an established network of distinguished international contributors and commentators.

Download or read book Social Mobility in the 20th Century written by Florian R. Hertel and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on a novel class scheme and a unique compilation of German and American data, this book reveals that intergenerational class mobility increased over most of the past century. While country differences in intergenerational mobility are surprisingly small, gender, regional, racial and ethnic differences were initially large but declined over time. At the end of the 20th century, however, mobility prospects turned to the worse in both countries. In light of these findings, the book develops a narrative account of historical socio-political developments that are likely to have driven the basic resemblances across countries but also account for the initial decline and the more recent increase in intergenerational inequality.

Book Synopsis Social Mobility in Europe by : Richard Breen
Download or read book Social Mobility in Europe written by Richard Breen and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004-11-25 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Social Mobility in Europe is the most comprehensive study to date of trends in intergenerational social mobility. It uses data from 11 European countries covering the last 30 years of the twentieth century to analyze differences between countries and changes through time. The findings call into question several long-standing views about social mobility. We find a growing similarity between countries in their class structures and rates of absolute mobility: in other words, the countries of Europe are now more alike in their flows between class origins and destinations than they were thirty years ago. However, differences between countries in social fluidity (that is, the relative chances, between people of different class origins, of being found in given classdestinations) show no reduction and so there is no evidence supporting theories of modernization which predict such convergence. Our results also contradict the long-standing Featherman Jones Hauser hypothesis of a basic similarity in social fluidity in all industrial societies 'with a market economyand a nuclear family system'. There are considerable differences between countries like Israel and Sweden, where societal openness is very marked, and Italy, France, and Germany, where social fluidity rates are low. Similarly, there is a substantial difference between, for example, the Netherlands in the 1970s (which was quite closed) and in the 1990s, when it ranks among the most open societies.Mobility tables reflect many underlying processes and this makes it difficult to explain mobility and fluidity or to provide policy prescriptions. Nevertheless, those countries in which fluidity increased over the last decades of the twentieth century had not only succeeded in reducing class inequalities in educational attainment but had also restricted the degree to which, among people with the same level of education, class background affected their chances of gaining access to better classdestinations.
Book Synopsis Changing Classes by : Gøsta Esping-Andersen
Download or read book Changing Classes written by Gøsta Esping-Andersen and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1993-08-18 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes a significant contribution towards understanding the new class structures of post-industrial societies and the changing processes of social stratification and mobility. Drawing together comparative research on the dynamics of social stratification in a number of key western societies, the authors develop a framework for the analysis of post-industrial class formation. They illustrate the significance of the relations between the welfare state and the household, and the critical interface between gender and class. Case studies of the USA, the UK, Canada, Germany, Norway and Sweden examine the differing application of these ideas in individual welfare states.
Book Synopsis Social Stratification and Mobility by : K. L. Sharma
Download or read book Social Stratification and Mobility written by K. L. Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Social stratification as a theme of study and research in sociology occupies a place of immense significance. Structural, ideological and emotional issues, involved in the study of social stratification, have created controversies and diametrically contrary viewpoints. Professor Sharma examines critically theoretical and methodological issues in the essays included in this volume. A preference for the structural-historical approach with interdisciplinary focus is evident in it. Further, the book provides a comprehensive and critical review of the studies on social stratification particularly from a sociology of knowledge perspective. The debate regarding caste and class is presented with a refreshing analysis in terms of their nexus and continuity and change. Gaps between theory and method in respect of the studies on social stratification in India have also been pointed out. A note of Louis Dumontâ??s ""Homo Hierarchicus"" provides a brief, though critical, account of the structuralist perspective on caste stratification. Profiles of social stratification in specific settings such as urban-industrial, rural-agrarian and tribal provide a semblance of theoretical issues and empirical realities. Essays on social stratification and mobility among the scheduled castes, in particular, highlight the caste-class nexus. How ethnicity and class influence social relations among the tribal people is discussed in detail. Although, social mobility is discussed as a concurrent theme in all the essays, levels of social mobility, downward social mobility and social mobility among the scheduled castes have been analyzed specifically in the book. The book encompasses all that which one would normally like to know about social stratification in India. "
Book Synopsis The Process of Stratification by : Robert M. Hauser
Download or read book The Process of Stratification written by Robert M. Hauser and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Process of Stratification: Trends and Analyses discusses the conceptual scheme developed by Blau and Duncan. The book elaborates Blau and Duncan's description and analysis of socioencomic inequality, stratification, and inequality of opportunity in American society during the early 1960s. The authors review the assumptions and methods; they point to a different direction from the widely held assumption that occupational socioeconomic status is the primary determinant to mobility. They also use the Alphabetical Index as the basis for better collection method on data relating to occupation, industry and class of worker. As regards occupational mobility, the authors note that such mobility is limited by the depletion of occupational groups that higher-status occupations have sourced from. They also point that American society is homogenous in the sense of the determinants of socioeconomic achievements can exert influence. The authors then discuss an exercise in theory construction of intergenerational transmission of income. They conclude that income mobility is similar to occupational or educational mobility; to be more precise, they note that empirical evidence should be gathered. This book can prove useful for economists, sociologists, policy makers, as well as academicians involved in societal studies.
