Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Educational Experiments in Social Settlements This is a piece about adult education in social settlements. It is not a survey, nor is it research. The attempt has been made to show by means of a study of selected social settlements the extent to which they are actual and potential instruments for adult education. It is by intent an interpretation, not a statistical report. The opinions expressed both as to adult education as a movement and the social settlement as an institution are unabashedly personal. Advice was sought and followed as to the cities and the settlements which should be visited. The cities were New York, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, and Boston. Many more settlements were visited than arc reported in these pages. Those that were selected for illustrative purposes were chosen not because they were necessarily the "best," but because their programs in some phase or another of adult education were either the most typical or the most distinct. It is obvious, I hope, that the settlement as an agency for children, or health, or social case work was not considered a province of this study. My debt is a large one to officials of the social settlements, both in federation and in individual houses, to staff workers, and to many an unknown member of adult groups. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Settlements The Handbook is designed to continue the service rendered by the Bibliography of Settlements which was published in a succession of editions up to 1905 by the College Settlements Association. The typical settlement, under American conditions, is one which provides neutral territory traversing all the lines of racial and religious cleavage. The house which is wholly unsectarian not only from the point of view of its staff, but as judged by the various elements in its neighborhood, represents the main action of the kind of social enter prise here set forth. Nevertheless, it is clear that there is a considerable number of houses having a high degree of the settlement spirit while including some of the functions distinctive of a particular smaller or larger division of the church. Where such specific religious effort is conducted without willing or conscious invasion of other religious loyalties, it has not been construed as carrying the house in question beyond the distinctive limits of the settlement field. The nature of the religious affiliation of such houses is in all cases clearly indicated; and for the larger cities they are placed in a list by themselves. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Settlement Horizon: A National Estimate The writers, who began this study at the suggestion of a representative group of fellow-workers in different parts of the country, have to express their deep appreciation of ready and thorough aid received from nearly all the American settlement houses. Many head residents have given us the fullest value of personal reminiscence and judgment. A large store of significant private data, in addition to every sort of printed matter, has been placed in our hands. Burdensome questionnaires, and a great variety of special inquiries, have been carefully answered. The visits which it has been our privilege to make to not less than four hundred of the five hundred settlements in the United States have kept us continuously in a rare atmosphere of loyalty to settlement aims, while in each instance providing vital information and suggestion in a field of effort qualified so largely by individual vision and power, whether among veterans or recruits. In connection with these visits, frequent opportunity of conference was afforded with men and women who possess that decisive acquaintance with the settlement which comes to its sagacious neighbors. For the past decade, as joint secretaries of the National Federation of Settlements, we have had the opportunity of arranging for and responsibly participating in its annual meetings and of editing its reports; and have thus enjoyed close association with those giving expression, from year to year, to the most recent developments of specific experience and the most timely precipitants of conviction and purpose. Part of the official duties of the enterprise has been to keep in unbroken communication with staff and board members of neighborhood agencies throughout the United States and in many foreign countries. One of us has at different times visited the original as well as the more recent English establishments, and has had the privilege of seeing something of the new embodiments of settlement motive that are springing up at various points on the continent of Europe and in the Orient. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Americans in Process: A Settlement Study The study of North and West End life which makes up the present volume had its beginning in an investigation of South End conditions, the results of which were published four years ago in the book "The City Wilderness." It was found that much valuable material sought out for the South End study was equally available for the North and West Ends. The direct advantage of such a presentment has been apparent in the South End. The task of each agency for local improvement has been made more distinct. By laying out the large exhaustive measure of the local community's possibilities and needs, a stronger union of forces has been secured. It was felt that a similar study of the North and West Ends would be of service to the scheme of social improvement in those districts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Settlements: Their Point and Drift TO most onlookers a peculiar mist seems to hover about the university settlement enterprise. At times this nebulous quality has given shape to a vision in which the flower of the country's youth, touched with a new chivalry, go forth to establish outposts of civilization among the supposed barbarian hordes that threaten the modern city. Again, to some, disdaining illusion, this glamor has resolved itself into the mere vagueness that goes with amiable ineffectiveness. Settlement workers, more desirous of escaping the romanticist than the cynic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
