Book Synopsis Leadership and Growth by : David Brady
Download or read book Leadership and Growth written by David Brady and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-01-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does leadership affect economic growth and development? Is leadership an exogenous determinant or an endogenous outcome of growth and development processes? Can we differentiate between the two? Do leaders decisions and actions vary in importance over various stages in the process, at least in successful cases? How important is choosing the right economic model? To what extent does leadership affect the explicit or implicit time horizons of policy choices? Is leadership an important determinant of inclusiveness in growth? In what ways do leaders build consensus or institutions to allow time for the economic plan to work? What challenges does economic success generate? How do successful leaders adapt to new problems such as income inequality and a rising middle class? Does the creation of new institutions play any role in solving these problems? Why do leaders often choose second best political economic compromises in economic development? This book has been prepared for the Commission on Growth and Development to evaluate the state of knowledge on the relationship between leadership and economic growth. It does not pretend to provide all the answers, but does review the evidence, identify insights and offers examples of leaders making decisions and acting in ways that enhance economic growth. It examines a variety of topics including leaders roles in: promoting national unity, building good solid institutions, choosing innovative and localized policies, and creating political consensus for long run policy implementation. Written by prominent academics and actual policy makers, Leadership and Growth seeks to create a better understanding of the role of leadership in growth and to encourage further studies of the role of leadership in economic growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.

Book Synopsis Framework for a Fairer Future - the Equality Bill by : Great Britain. Government Equalities Office
Download or read book Framework for a Fairer Future - the Equality Bill written by Great Britain. Government Equalities Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008-06-26 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document sets out the Government's aims for the forthcoming Equality Bill. A substantial body of equality legislation has been introduced over the last four decades, but the legislation has become complex and hard to understand. The Equality Bill will declutter and strengthen the law. The Bill will introduce a new Equality Duty on the public sector, replacing the three existing duties on race, disability and gender and extending to gender reassignment, age, sexual orientation and religion or belief. The Bill will contain powers to outlaw unjustifiable age discrimination, but there will be further consultation on the design of the legislation before the new legal protections are introduced. Transparency is essential to tackling discrimination, and public bodies will have to comply with the Equality Duty over gender pay, ethnic minority employment and disability employment. The Government will work with business to improve transparency in the private sector. The Bill will extend the scope of positive action so that employers can take account, when selecting between two equally qualified candidates, under-representation of disadvantaged groups. Permission to use women-only shortlists for parliamentary candidates will be extended to 2030. Non-legislative measures to increase the number of ethnic minority elected representatives in Parliament and local councils will be pursued. Finally the Bill will aim to strengthen enforcement. Tribunals will be allowed to make wider recommendations in discrimination cases, which will go beyond benefitting the individual taking the case so that there are benefits for the rest of the workforce of the employer found to have discriminated. A more comprehensive paper on the content of the Bill will be published shortly.

Book Synopsis Europe and Its Immigrants in the 21st Century by : Demetrios G. Papademetriou
Download or read book Europe and Its Immigrants in the 21st Century written by Demetrios G. Papademetriou and published by Migration Policy Institute and the Bertelsmann Foundation. This book was released on 2006 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European policymakers are attempting to develop immigration policies that meet economic needs and promote greater competitiveness and growth —without undermining the social models so valued by their electorates. To succeed, they must take into account aging populations, high and persistent levels of overall unemployment, even higher levels of unemployment among immigrants and ethnic minorities, and sector- and location-specific labor mismatches and shortfalls. Europe and Its Immigrants in the 21st Century examines many of the critical issues facing European economies and societies with regard to immigration. The authors juxtapose these issues with those facing the "traditional countries of immigration" (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States) and offers policy recommendations to address them. Among other topics, this book examines options for immigrant selection and managing all forms of migration better (including "irregular" migration), and offers recommendations for immigrant and minority integration policies at the EU, national, and local levels - where most integration work takes place. Contributors include Wolfgang Lutz (Vienna Institute for Demography), Klaus Zimmerman (Institute for the Study of Labor/DIW, Berlin), Louka Katseli (OECD), Grete Brochman (Institute for Social Research, University of Oslo), Heaven Crawley (AMRE Consulting), Demetrios G. Papademetriou (Migration Policy Institute), Sarah Spencer (COMPAS, University of Oxford), Brian Ray (University of Ottawa), Rinus Pennix (University of Amsterdam), Jorge Gaspar (University of Lisbon), Lucinda Fonseca (Centro de Estudos Geográficos), Kathleen Newland (Migration Policy Institute), Doris Meissner (Migration Policy Institute), T. Book Synopsis National Judges as European Union Judges by : Tobias Nowak
Download or read book National Judges as European Union Judges written by Tobias Nowak and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is the outcome of a research project on the application and enforcement of EU law by national judges. The project focused on the experiences of national judges in North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and the Netherlands, seeking to understand the processes surrounding the application of EU law. Furthermore, the role of national judges as decentralized EU judges is examined. The research shows that EU law still has limited impact on the type of cases tried. The book makes several recommendations to foster the application of EU law.
