Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The social teaching of the Roman Catholic Church has aroused publicinterest in recent years with the increased involvement of North American bishops in matters of civic morality, with the growth of liberation theology in Central and South America, and with the ongoing political and economic statements of Pope John Paul II. A vital ingredient of Roman Catholic social teaching is the papal encyclical literature. Debate grows, however, over exactly what the papal letters teach. Noteworthy encyclical commentaries exist, but none has attempted a comprehensive historical analysis of the complete content and overall coherence of Roman Catholic encyclical social teaching. This book, appearing in advance of the 1991 centennial of "Rerum novarum", provides the kind of analysis that concerned Roman Catholics, public officials, social ethicists, theologians and students are looking for: a textually inclusive and topically broad-gauged study of Catholic social teaching in its historical development with a forthright assessment of the teaching's contradictions and consistencies.

Book Synopsis The Concept of Justice by : Thomas Patrick Burke
Download or read book The Concept of Justice written by Thomas Patrick Burke and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-02-24 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Concept of Justice, Patrick Burke explores and argues for a return to traditional ideas of ordinary justice in opposition to conceptions of 'social justice' that came to dominate political thought in the 20th Century. Arguing that our notions of justice have been made incoherent by the radical incompatibility between instinctive notions of ordinary justice and theoretical conceptions of social justice, the book goes on to explore the historical roots of these ideas of social justice. Finding the roots of these ideas in religious circles in Italy and England in the 19th century, Burke explores the ongoing religious influence in the development of the concept in the works of Marx, Mill and Hobhouse. In opposition to this legacy of liberal thought, the book presents a new theory of ordinary justice drawing on the thought of Immanuel Kant. In this light, Burke finds that all genuine ethical evaluation must presuppose free will and individual responsibility and that all true injustice is fundamentally coercive.
Book Synopsis Human Dignity and the Common Good by : Richard Rousseau
Download or read book Human Dignity and the Common Good written by Richard Rousseau and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-11-30 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consisting of the full text of eight papal social encyclicals dating back to 1891 and the papacy of Leo XIII, and one important papal radio address on Christian social ethics, this reference work also introduces, outlines, and summarizes the texts in a clear, understandable language. Each encyclical was intended to be a commentary on and modernization of Leo XIII's masterly and foundational encyclical Rerum Novarum, and Rousseau brings them together using their standard paragraph numbering system for easy reference. This valuable reference represents a unique thematic approach to these important religious and social documents. Readers will better understand the social, economic, political and thoroughly Christian ideas of Popes throughout the 20th century with the outline and summary interpretation of each text.
