Book excerpt: This is a volume of comparative essays on the First World War that focuses on one central feature: the political and cultural "mobilization" of the populations of the main belligerent countries in Europe behind the war. It explores how and why they supported the war for so long (as soldiers and civilians), why that support weakened in the face of the devastation of trench warfare, and why states with a stronger degree of political support and national integration (such as Britain and France) were ultimately successful.

Book Synopsis Social Mobilization Beyond Ethnicity by : Chiara Milan
Download or read book Social Mobilization Beyond Ethnicity written by Chiara Milan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-11-20 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an in-depth investigation of the emergence and spread of social mobilizations that transcend ethnicity in societies violently divided along ethno-national lines. Using Bosnia Herzegovina as a case study, the book explores episodes of mobilization which have superseded ethno-nationalist cleavages. Bosnia Herzegovina emerged from the 1992–95 war brutally impoverished and deeply ethnically divided, representing a critical and strategic case for the examination and understanding of the dynamics of mobilization in such divided societies. Despite difficult circumstances for civic-based collective action, social mobilizations in the country have grown in size, number and intensity in recent years. Marked by citizen demand for accountable governance, responsive urbanism, and access to basic human rights, these protests have been driven by economic, social and political problems which cut across religious and ethnic divides. Examining the variation in spatial and social scale of contention, the book investigates movements’ formation, their organizational structures and networking strategies and advances research on divided societies and social movements. This volume will be of interest to scholars and researchers of Southeastern Europe and those examining political dissent, social movements and mobilization in divided societies, as well as practitioners in civil society, grassroots groups and political activists.

Book Synopsis Transnational Social Mobilisation and Minority Rights by : Corinne Lennox
Download or read book Transnational Social Mobilisation and Minority Rights written by Corinne Lennox and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-12-05 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which minority groups across the world are reshaping the international minority rights protection system. It documents the actions of four major groups that are using transnational social mobilisation to achieve recognition of their identities and their rights. The result is a greater pluralism in global identity politics and a wide range of new group-specific standards that can inform policies on multiculturalism, political participation, and socio-economic inclusion in the national and international spheres. The book begins by summarising the learning from the global movements of indigenous peoples and Roma. The book then focuses in greater depth on the cases of Afro-descendants in Latin America and of Dalits and caste-affected groups in South Asia and beyond. Each case study shows the historical roots of group-specific transnational mobilisation and how activists have constructed a distinct identity frame out of shared experiences. The book explores key parallels and differences between the discourse, framing strategies, organisational structures and political opportunities used in each case to show which factors have influenced the success or failures of their norm entrepreneurship. The role that international institutions have played in supporting these efforts is given special attention, including intergovernmental bodies such as the UN, the EU and the OAS, and international non-governmental organisations. The UN World Conference Against Racism is explored as a particularly significant political opportunity across the cases. Among academic audiences, this book will appeal to those researching minority rights, social movements, global governance, discrimination and multiculturalism from legal, political, sociological and critical theory perspectives. It will also interest practitioners and activists working on minority rights and the challenges of norm compliance, socio-economic inclusion and governance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The year 2011 marked the emergence of a series of mobilizations of the indignant that spread like wildfire around the world—from the Arab Spring to Europe, and soon afterwards to Occupy Wall Street, the Spanish 15M was pivotal to the transnational diffusion of protest. This volume analyzes the features that turned the 15M into a beacon for international mobilization, and those that garnered it unprecedented domestic support, surpassing historic socio-economic and politico-ideological fractures in Spain. It also delves into its gradual demise, and its profound impact on the emergence of political "offsprings" that portray themselves as heirs to the 15M spirit, such as Podemos. This book sheds new light on the 15M phenomenon, providing an international perspective that rejects cultural, economic, and even political reductionism. Including insights from sociologists and political scientists from around the world, it explores themes such as identity, emotion, cultural resources, the media, and the relationship between social movements, regional institutions and the state. Each chapter reflects on the impact and legacy of the 15M movement, as well as the important questions it raises about the current theoretical framework for social movements in Spain and beyond. Crisis and Social Mobilization in Contemporary Spain: The 15M Movement is a fascinating read for all students and scholars with interests in political sociology and social movements.

Book Synopsis Supporting a Movement for Health and Health Equity by : Alison Mack
Download or read book Supporting a Movement for Health and Health Equity written by Alison Mack and published by . This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Supporting a Movement for Health and Health Equity" is the summary of a workshop convened in December 2013 by the Institute of Medicine Roundtable on the Promotion of Health Equity and the Elimination of Health Disparities and the Roundtable on Population Health Improvement to explore the lessons that may be gleaned from social movements, both those that are health-related and those that are not primarily focused on health. Participants and presenters focused on elements identified from the history and sociology of social change movements and how such elements can be applied to present-day efforts nationally and across communities to improve the chances for long, healthy lives for all. The idea of movements and movement building is inextricably linked with the history of public health. Historically, most movements - including, for example, those for safer working conditions, for clean water, and for safe food - have emerged from the sustained efforts of many different groups of individuals, which were often organized in order to protest and advocate for changes in the name of such values as fairness and human rights. The purpose of the workshop was to have a conversation about how to support the fragments of health movements that roundtable members believed they could see occurring in society and in the health field. Recent reports from the National Academies have highlighted evidence that the United States gets poor value on its extraordinary investments in health - in particular, on its investments in health care - as American life expectancy lags behind that of other wealthy nations. As a result, many individuals and organizations, including the Healthy People 2020 initiative, have called for better health and longer lives.

Book Synopsis Mobilization against Asylum Seekers in Contemporary Urban Spaces by : Iris Beau Segers
Download or read book Mobilization against Asylum Seekers in Contemporary Urban Spaces written by Iris Beau Segers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the issue of local mobilization against asylum seekers in urban areas, which are often disproportionally affected by complex issues related to immigration and integration, as well as socio-economic development and growing inequalities. Based on ethnographic research in the city of Rotterdam, it explores the conditions under which mobilization against the establishment of an asylum seekers’ centre emerged, offering a combined analysis of interviews, social media, and mainstream media to demonstrate the key role played by storytelling in the development of opposition to the arrival of asylum seekers. Presenting a theoretical model of anti-immigration mobilization that connects the social importance of storytelling to broader socio-political developments and conditions, this volume will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, and politics with interests in migration, social movements, and mobilization around contentious issues.
