Referring to debates about the respective merits of deepening and widening, they address the equally important associated tradeoffs between exclusion and dilution: they point to the risks on the one hand of a Europe that excludes foreign goods, immigrants and entire countries, and on the other of an unfocused definition of Europe that may dilute the very values that a "European identity" is intended to protect.

Book Synopsis The Origins of European Identity by : Lambros Couloubaritsis
Download or read book The Origins of European Identity written by Lambros Couloubaritsis and published by Peter Lang Gmbh, Internationaler Verlag Der Wissenschaften. This book was released on 1993 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to the Europe of commerce, technology and science which is in the process of gradual formation there is another quite essential Europe - the citizens' Europe - which is something of a poor relation, even though it is a reality which everyone, starting with the politicians, earnestly wishes to see come about. Such a citizens' Europe should form the bricks and mortar of the European Union. How, then, can we arouse a greater feeling of solidarity and develop that sense of European identity which is so dear to us? To whom can we turn if not to youth and, therefore, to education? The Community Institutions have expressed the desire to form Europe through education and to reinforce the European dimension of education. Nevertheless, a huge void needs to be filled in this area and the Europe of education, still at the embryonic stage, has yet to be constructed. Hence the interest in providing secondary school teachers and students in the twelve countries of the Community with a work aimed primarily at charting a common pool of information on the European identity and encompassing the main thrust of ideas and the essential features of European civilization. In order to reflect current Community policy more faithfully, the book does not set out to replace the curricula taught at the various national schools. Rather, it is intended to supplement them in the form of a uniform and identical «adjunct» to education, with a view to imparting a better knowledge of and greater love for Europe. The choice of both interlocking subject matters designed to illuminate and guide the editing of this work and the multilingual approach, without which the work would lose part of its purely European aim (the work will be published simultaneously in several different languages), is intended to highlight as far as possible the European ideal and the cultural dimension of Europe, starting with the origins of Europe and tracing Europe's past and present, as well as its prospects for the future.
Book Synopsis Rethinking Europe by : Gerard Delanty
Download or read book Rethinking Europe written by Gerard Delanty and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dominant approaches to the transformation of Europe ignore contemporary social theory interpretations of the nature and dynamics of social change. Here, Delanty and Rumford argue that we need a theory of society in order to understand Europeanization. This book advances the case that Europeanization should be theorized in terms of: globalization major social transformations that are not exclusively spear-headed by the EU the wider context of the transformation of modernity. This fascinating book broadens the terms of the debate on Europeanization, conventionally limited to the supersession of the nation-state by a supra-national authority and the changes within member states consequent upon EU membership. Demonstrating the relevance of social theory to contemporary issues and with a focus on European transformation rather than simplistic notions of Europe-building, this truly multidisciplinary volume will appeal to readers from a range of social science disciplines, including sociology, geography, political science and European studies.
Book Synopsis Dimensions of Heritage and Memory by : Christopher Whitehead
Download or read book Dimensions of Heritage and Memory written by Christopher Whitehead and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dimensions of Heritage and Memory is a landmark contribution on the politics of the past in Europe today. The book explores the meanings of heritage in a time of crisis, when the past permeates social and political divisions, identity contests and official projects to forge a European community. Providing an overview of the literature and an analysis of the assumptions, values and philosophies embedded within European-level policy, the book explores different dimensions of heritage and memory, from official sites, museums and policy, to party politics, historical re-enactments and the everyday ways in which people use the past to make sense of who they are. The volume explores how different understandings of and attachments to the European past produce different ‘Europes’ in the present, accounting for today’s tense social and political relations. The book also explores formative histories for European identities that are neglected or hidden because of political circumstances and non-official heritage. Contributors consider the meanings of interlocking crises, such as economic fallout, xenophobia and the fragmentation of the EU, for new understandings of Europe’s past in the present. Dimensions of Heritage and Memory will be of great interest to researchers, academics and postgraduate students in the fields of heritage and memory studies, museum studies, history, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology and politics. The book will also be interesting to practitioners and cultural heritage policy-makers. Book Synopsis The Social Dimension: Volume 2 by : Henri Tajfel
Download or read book The Social Dimension: Volume 2 written by Henri Tajfel and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1984-05-24 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two volumes of The Social Dimension present a comprehensive survey of the major developments in social psychology which took place in Europe during the very active 1970s and 1980s. They aim to capture the diversity and vitality of the discipline, stress the growing emphasis on fully social analyses of social psychological phenomena - hence 'the social dimension' - and to provide a valuable resource for researchers in the future. Although comprehensive in scope, the volumes are not written in the formal style of a reference handbook. Instead, the authors of the thirty-three chapters, drawn from more than a dozen mainly European countries and all experts in their own fields, were invited to present their own personal overviews of the issues in social psychology on which they were actively working. Both volumes are organized into three main Parts. Volume 1 is concerned with the social development of the child, interpersonal communication and relationships, and the social reality, group processes, and intergroup relations. This ambitious enterprise has produced a distinctive yet authoritative summary and evaluation of the growth points of social psychology in Europe which will interest and influence not only social psychologists but many readers from related disciplines.

Book Synopsis Identity and Integration in Europe by : Yvonne Hapke
Download or read book Identity and Integration in Europe written by Yvonne Hapke and published by Akademische Verlagsgemeinschaft München. This book was released on 2009-09-07 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assumptions of politicians, teachers, and other professionals about integration often fall short of theoretical and empirical support. This work seeks to bridge this gap by proposing a new theoretical concept looking at personal security and testing it empirically with data from 21 European countries. As migration often affects migrants and members of the receiving society alike both have been included in the analysis. Whereas classic identity research strongly relies on qualitative techniques and experimental designs, Yvonne Hapke adopts a quantitative approach. She successfully demonstrates that ethnic closure and xenophobia are the result of damaged or threatened identities and pose a major obstacle to integration. However, welcoming individuals with all of their defining characteristics, needs, and identities helps people to develop trust in others as well as in political institutions and makes them more confident about their country's future.
Book Synopsis Language, Culture and Identity in Two Chinese Community Schools by : Sara Ganassin
Download or read book Language, Culture and Identity in Two Chinese Community Schools written by Sara Ganassin and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2020-04-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates the social, political and educational role of community language education in migratory contexts. It draws on an ethnographic study that investigates the significance of Mandarin-Chinese community schooling in Britain as an intercultural space for those involved. To understand the interrelation of ‘language’, ‘culture’ and ‘identity’, the book adopts a ‘bricolage’ approach that brings together a range of theoretical perspectives. This book challenges homogenous and stereotypical constructions of Chinese language, culture and identity – such as the image of Chinese pupils as conformist and deferent learners – that are often repeated both in the media and in academic discussion.
Book Synopsis From Foreign Language Education to Education for Intercultural Citizenship by : Michael Byram
Download or read book From Foreign Language Education to Education for Intercultural Citizenship written by Michael Byram and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2008-05-27 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays and reflections starts from an analysis of the purposes of foreign language teaching and argues that this should include educational objectives which are ultimately similar to those of education for citizenship. It does so by a journey through reflections on what is possible and desirable in the classroom and how language teaching has a specific role in education systems which have long had, and often still have, the purpose of encouraging young people to identify with the nation-state. Foreign language education can break through this framework to introduce a critical internationalism. In a ‘globalised’ and ‘internationalised’ world, the importance of identification with people beyond the national borders is crucial. Combined with education for citizenship, foreign language education can offer an education for ‘intercultural citizenship’.
Book Synopsis Contemporary Critical Discourse Studies by : Christopher Hart
Download or read book Contemporary Critical Discourse Studies written by Christopher Hart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CDS is a multifarious field constantly developing different methodological frameworks for analysing dynamically evolving aspects of language in a broad range of socio-political and institutional contexts. This volume is a cutting-edge, interdisciplinary account of these theoretical and empirical developments. It presents an up-to-date survey of Critical Discourse Studies (CDS), covering both the theoretical landscape and the analytical territories that it extends over. It is intended for critical scholars and students who wish to keep abreast of the current state of the art. The book is divided into two parts. In the first part, the chapters are organised around different methodological perspectives for CDS (history, cognition, multimodality and corpora, among others). In the second part, the chapters are organised around particular discourse types and topics investigated in CDS, both traditionally (e.g. issues of racism and gender inequality) and only more recently (e.g. issues of health, public policy, and the environment). This is, altogether, an essential new reference work for all CDS practitioners.
