Book excerpt: The relationships between children and their parents are the building blocks for f- ily relationships throughout life. The nature of the parent-child relationship begins with parenting—the practices and strategies that parents engage in as they raise their children. Parenting during childhood sets the stage for parent-adolescent relati- ships. These relationships make a critical difference during the teenage years: we know that when parent-adolescent relationships are healthy and strong, adolescents are more likely to have high aspirations and achievement, and to make healthier choices when it comes to risk-taking. Most of the research in this ?eld has been based in the United States and has been conducted through studies of European American families. Yet a growing body of research suggests important ethnic differences in styles of parenting and the qua- ties characterizing the parent-adolescent relationship. In this area of research, most existing studies have examined ethnic and cultural group differences using widely accepted measures and concepts of parenting. Comparative studies assume that dimensions of parenting such as parental warmth or control have the same meaning across cultures; however, given that conceptualizations of adolescent-parent re- tionships have been developed and tested on samples comprised largely of European Americans, we cannot rule out the possibility that the way we understand parenting has been shaped by the predominantly Western- and U. S. -focused research in this ?eld.

Book excerpt: This study explored the relationship between neighborhood (disadvantage, Chinese concentration, and social cohesion), parenting (parental home and school involvement, and parent-adolescent conflict) and Chinese American adolescents achievement and depressive symptoms. Data for this study were taken from the Early Adolescent Cohort study (EAC). A total of 221 Chinese American adolescents participated. Structural equation modeling was used to examine the relationship between neighborhood, parenting and Chinese American achievement and depressive symptoms as well as the mediating role of parenting. The results revealed that higher Chinese concentration was marginally but meaningfully related to lower achievement. Higher levels of parent-adolescent conflict were a powerful predictor of both lower achievement and higher levels of depressive symptoms. Moreover, results of the study revealed that parental home and school involvement were negatively influenced by neighborhood disadvantage. Compared to parents living in less disadvantaged neighborhoods, parents who resided in more disadvantaged neighborhoods were less involved in their youths learning at home and school.

Book excerpt: This collection of essays addresses issues related to the intersection of family relationships and several contexts for the social and emotional development of ethnic minority adolescents. The papers are organized in sections under subtitles which reflect three contextual frames through which these issues may be examined. The first section focuses on the relationship between economic factors and resources on the one hand and family relations as environments for development on the other. The next part focuses on family and peer networks and relations as contexts for the emotional and social development of adolescents. The last section takes neighborhood and school as contexts for and determinants of social and emotional adjustment in adolescence. Like much of the extant work and current thought concerning development in ethnic minority children and adolescents, the authors have highlighted the more stressful and negative aspects of these several contexts. There are a few explicit and several implicit references made to supportive and more positive contexts and manifestations of relationships which frame the developmental experiences of ethnic minority adolescents. These serve as a reminder that many ethnic minority adolescents do overcome the odds against success and grow into healthy and wholesome adults. However, in large measure, this book is a contribution to our understanding of the problematic circumstances under which a significant segment of the population exists, reminding us that life for ethnic minority adolescents is difficult. The fact that some of these young people manage to overcome the negative and stressful aspects of their experiences and defy the implicit prediction of failure to thrive is truly remarkable.

Book excerpt: This mixed-methods dissertation examined Filipino American adolescents' experiences in high school. Study 1 examined Filipino American adolescents' experiences of model minority stereotypes (MMS), including their internalization of MMS, the extent to which they believe that others stereotype them as model minorities, and how their experiences of the MMS relate to their racial-ethnic identity and quality of relationships at home and school. Study 2 examined how experiences of the MMS were associated with Filipino American adolescents' academic achievement (i.e., GPA and educational expectations) and psychological maladjustment, and what individual (e.g., attributions for success/failure), family (e.g., parent-child relationship quality, family cohesion and conflict) and school-level (e.g., teacher and peer relationship quality) factors moderated this relationship. Finally, Study 3 focused on describing the experiences of students exhibiting the achievement-adjustment paradox (i.e., high academic achievement and psychological maladjustment) to shed light on the consequences of pervasive MMS. Guided by the integrated conceptual framework for understanding the development of Asian American children and youth (J. Mistry et al., 2016), overall results from this dissertation suggested that Filipino American adolescents' developmental outcomes are influenced by their experiences of the MMS and social relationships within home and school contexts. To support the positive development of Filipino American adolescents, efforts should be aimed at combatting pervasive MMS and fostering positive family, peer, and school-based relationships.

A total of 50 Filipino immigrant adolescents in Singapore had been selected as participants. There were two variables measured; the cultural adjustment stages and cross-cultural adjustment aspects. Using a descriptive research design, the researchers formulated 2 sets of 5-point Likert scale questionnaires. One consists of items on the four cultural adjustment stages; honeymoon stage, culture shock, gradual adjustment and feeling at home. The second questionnaire consists of items on the three aspects of cross-cultural adjustment; general environment, adjustment to school and interaction adjustment. The data were analyzed using mean per item to determine which cultural adjustment stage and cross-cultural aspect of adjustment the participants were experiencing. The researchers found that there was no definite cultural stage that the participants were mostly identified. They also found that among the categories of the general environment, the way of life had the lowest level of adjustment while adjustment to school and interaction adjustment had a high level of adjustment. Based on the results of the study, key factors to ease the adaptability, such as the favorability of the physical and social environment were recommended to those who are planning to migrate.
