Book Synopsis Social Issues in Diagnosis by : Annemarie Jutel
Download or read book Social Issues in Diagnosis written by Annemarie Jutel and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the social process of diagnosis is critical to improving doctor-patient relationships and health outcomes. Diagnosis, the classification tool of medicine, serves an important social role. It confers social status on those who diagnose, and it impacts the social status of those diagnosed. Studying diagnosis from a sociological perspective offers clinicians and students a rich and sometimes provocative view of medicine and the cultures in which it is practiced. Social Issues in Diagnosis describes how diagnostic labels and the process of diagnosis are anchored in groups and structures as much as they are in the interactions between patient and doctor. The sociological perspective is informative, detailed, and different from what medical, nursing, social work, and psychology students—and other professionals who diagnose or work with diagnoses—learn in a pathophysiology or clinical assessment course. It is precisely this difference that should be integral to student and clinician education, enriching the professional experience with improved doctor-patient relationships and potentially better health outcomes. Chapters are written by both researchers and educators and reviewed by medical advisors. Just as medicine divides disease into diagnostic categories, so have the editors classified the social aspects of diagnosis into discrete areas of reflection, including • Classification of illness • Process of diagnosis • Phenomenon of uncertainty • Diagnostic labels • Discrimination • Challenges to medical authority • Medicalization • Technological influences • Self-diagnosis Additional chapters by clinicians, including New York Times columnist Lisa Sanders, M.D., provide a view from the front line of diagnosis to round out the discussion. Sociology and pre-med students, especially those prepping for the new MCAT section on social and behavioral sciences, will appreciate the discussion questions, glossary of key terms, and CLASSIFY mnemonic.

Book Synopsis Evangelism and Social Concern in the Theology of Carl F. H. Henry by : Jerry M. Ireland
Download or read book Evangelism and Social Concern in the Theology of Carl F. H. Henry written by Jerry M. Ireland and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do evangelism and social concern relate to one another in the mission of the church? How should the Old Testament's emphasis on social justice inform the praxis of modern believers? Does the Bible emphasize individual salvation, or does it teach a broader, more inclusive concept? Theologians, missiologists, pastors, and educators have wrestled with these questions for centuries. But especially since the early part of the twentieth century, this debate has increasingly become a point of contention among evangelical Christians, with few indications that a consensus may soon be forthcoming. Yet few have offered so thorough an answer to these questions as has Carl F. H. Henry. Henry's regenerational model of evangelism and social concern stands on the shoulders of Augustine and many others, and offers what may be the best way forward. This book explores Henry's thoughts on this subject and sets him in dialogue with numerous others who have written on these topics. Thus it will prove a valuable resource for all interested in this topic.

Book Synopsis Social Concern and Left Politics in Jewish American Art by : Matthew Baigell
Download or read book Social Concern and Left Politics in Jewish American Art written by Matthew Baigell and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2015-04-03 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the important and barely examined connections between the humanitarian concerns embedded in the religious heritage of Jewish American artists and the appeal of radical political causes between the years of the Great Migration from Eastern Europe in the 1880s and the beginning of World War II in the late 1930s. Visual material consists primarily of political cartoons published in leftwing Yiddish- and English-language newspapers and magazines. Artists often commented on current events using biblical and other Jewish references, meaning that whatever were their political concerns, their Jewish heritage was ever present. By the late 1940s, the obvious ties between political interests and religious concerns largely disappeared. The text, set against events of the times—the Russian Revolution, the Depression and the rise of fascism during the 1930s as well as life on New York's Lower East Side—includes artists' statements as well as the thoughts of religious, literary, and political figures ranging from Marx to Trotsky to newspaper editor Abraham Cahan to contemporary art critics including Meyer Schapiro.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the evangelical church, which had been the leader in social welfare and reform prior to the twentieth century, discontinue its involvement in social concerns? Is a commitment to personal evangelism incompatible with an interest in social issues? In this provocative book, Dr. Moberg analyzes the Great Reversal of the early twentieth century and discusses its causes and effects, all in the context of seeing the Bible as the guide to faith and conduct. The importance of recognizing and coping with social evil as well as personal sin is emphasized, and the author concludes with a summary of developments that are helping to reverse the Great Reversal and restore evangelical Christianity to its rightful place of leadership.
