Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social and Diplomatic Memories: 1884-1893 I have arrived at a time of life when it seems desirable before memory weakens to place on record some of those things which seem worthy of remembrance in a life which has been rich in varied, and perhaps unusual, experiences. I have not only seen history in the making from very advantageous posts of observation, but I have been brought into personal relations with many makers of history them selves and have an ample store of letter-books and of notes written at the moment when events were shaping or when conversations with certain persons of importance had just taken place, which it may be best eventually to destroy. On the other hand I have never preserved or taken copies of official documents, nor did I make any notes from them for my diaries. Book excerpt: Sir James Rennell Rodd a key diplomat during the First World War holding the post as the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Italy. It was through his influence that secured the adhesion of the Italians to the Allied cause even during the bloody battles in the rocky outcrops of the North East of the country. This tied down large numbers of Austrian and German troops that could have been utilised on other fronts. He published his memoirs in three volumes, of which this is the third, between 1922 and 1925; they were received with some acclaim, following a life-long passion with literature he wrote with an easy style, with a great eye for detail and a vivid eye the political tides that ebbed and flowed around him. An interesting book from a viewpoint often forgotten in the literature of the First World War.

Book excerpt: This book is a biographical study of the geographer/explorer and banker Francis Rodd, the second Lord Rennell of Rodd (1895-1978). Rodd’s life is interesting for the way it connected the worlds of geography, international finance, politics, espionage, and wartime military administration. He was famous in the 1920s for his journeys to the Sahara and his study of the Tuareg, People of the Veil (1926). A career in banking included a stint at the Bank of England, before he became a Partner in the merchant bank Morgan Grenfell—where remained for most of his working life (1933-1961). During the war he worked for the Ministry of Economic Warfare (1939=40), before getting closely involved in the sphere of military government (civil affairs). In 1942, he was War Office’s Chief Political Officer in East Africa. He was then appointed head of the first Allied Military Government in occupied Europe (Chief Civil Affairs Officer of AMGOT). In civil affairs, he was drawn to the principles of indirect rule. A generalist in an age of growing specialisation, he was also a mixture of traditionalist and moderniser. A product of Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, and elevated to the peerage in 1941, he was well-connected socially, and his life is a window onto British society at a time of great change.

Book excerpt: "A Superb New Biography . . . A Tragic Story, Brilliantly Told." —Andrew Roberts, Literary Review George Nathaniel Curzon's controversial life in public service stretched from the high noon of his country's empire to the traumatized years following World War I. As viceroy of India under Queen Victoria and foreign secretary under King George V, the obsessive Lord Curzon left his unmistakable mark on the era. David Gilmour's award-winning book—with a new foreword by the author—is a brilliant assessment of Curzon's character and achievements, offering a richly dramatic account of the infamous long vendettas, the turbulent friendships, and the passionate, risky love affairs that complicated and enriched his life. Born into the ruling class of what was then the world's greatest power, Curzon was a fervent believer in British imperialism who spent his life proving he was fit for the task. Often seen as arrogant and tempestuous, he was loathed as much as he was adored, his work disparaged as much as it was admired. In Gilmour's well-rounded appraisal, Curzon emerges as a complex, tragic figure, a gifted leader who saw his imperial world overshadowed at the dawn of democracy.

Book excerpt: Axel Munthe: The Road to San Michele' tells for the first time the riveting life-story of an extraordinary individual, who came to define the times he lived in. The precociously bright son of a Swedish pharmacist, Axel Munthe worked under Jean Martin Charcot, and in 1880, became the youngest doctor in French history. By the 1890s, he was world-famous for his healing powers, believed by some to be supernatural. He moved in the most colourful and exalted circles of fin de siecle Europe, counting amongst his friends Henry James, Howard Carter, Rainer Maria Rilke, Lady Ottoline Morrell and Count Zeppelin. Though physician to the Swedish court, where he became the lover of the Crown Princess Victoria, Munthe was more at home with nature than with people. He travelled through remotest Lapland, as well as across Europe, and his great love was animals, whom he went to great lengths to protect. In 1929 he published 'The Story of San Michele', an account of his life, shot through with his love for Italy and Capri, where he built a bird sanctuary and the house of his dreams, the Villa San Michele. The book became an international best seller, translated into 40 languages, and has become one of the classics of the last century. Bengt Jangfeldt is the first person to have gone through Munthe's diaries, letters and notebooks to produce this definitive account of one of 20th Century Europe's most vibrant figures. Written with the verve and exuberance of its subject, 'Axel Munthe: The Road to San Michele' evokes a lost time, a life of passions, and a man who believed in every sense in the power of dreams.
