Book Synopsis Brother Versus Brother by : Ron L. Haywood
Download or read book Brother Versus Brother written by Ron L. Haywood and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2021-03-15 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most times estranged, fate lures two brothers to center stage on opposing sides of northern and southern courtrooms. Siblings are transformed into jaded sparring partners as they battle in the ring of the criminal justice system. Rivalry on steroids, they very much resemble knockoffs of a modern-day Cain and Abel or Jacob and Esau with aggressive, heartless actions that provoke reckless reactions devoid of compassion. Such counter action lead to devastating consequences, which puts into question the moral compass of both brothers. "Justice"—exactly what is it? Brother versus Brother explores the societal phenomenon of "justice" from a northern, urban big-city perspective with diverse ethnic backgrounds and cultures. This extraordinary story reaffirms a "code of justice" spoken of on many occasions by the ancient judges: "In those days...everyone did what was right in his own eyes."

Book Synopsis A History of Japanese Literature, Volume 3 by : Jin'ichi Konishi
Download or read book A History of Japanese Literature, Volume 3 written by Jin'ichi Konishi and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this third of five volumes tracing the history of Japanese literature through Mishima Yukio, Jin'ichi Konishi portrays the high medieval period. Here he continues to examine the influence of Chinese literature on Japanese writers, addressing in particular reactions to Sung ideas, Zen Buddhism, and the ideal of literary vocation, michi. This volume focuses on three areas in which Konishi has long made distinctive contributions: court poetry (waka), featuring twelfth-and thirteenth-century works, especially those of Fujiwara Teika (1162-1241); standard linked poetry (renga), from its inception to its full harvest in the work of Sogi (1421-1502); and the theatrical form noh, including the work of Zeami (ca. 1365-1443) and Komparu Zenchiku (1405-?). The author also considers prose narrative and popular song. Originally published in 1991. Download or read book The Suttanipata written by Bodhi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 1616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark volume in the Teachings of the Buddha series translates the Suttanipata, a text that matches the Dhammapada in its concise power and its centrality to the Buddhist tradition. Celebrated translator Bhikkhu Bodhi illuminates this text and its classical commentaries with elegant renderings and authoritative annotations. The Suttanipata, or “Group of Discourses” is a collection of discourses ascribed to the Buddha that includes some of the most popular suttas of the Pali Canon, among them the Discourse on Loving-Kindness Sutta. The suttas are primarily in verse, though several are in mixed prose and verse. The Suttanipata contains discourses that extol the figure of the muni, the illumined sage, who wanders homeless completely detached from the world. Other suttas, such as the Discourse on Downfall and the Discourse on Blessings, establish the foundations of Buddhist lay ethics. The last two chapters—the Atthakavagga (Chapter of Octads) and the Parayanavagga (The Way to the Beyond)—are considered to be among the most ancient parts of the Pali Canon. The Atthakavagga advocates a critical attitude toward views and doctrines. The Parayanavagga is a beautiful poem in which sixteen spiritual seekers travel across India to meet the Buddha and ask him profound questions pertaining to the highest goal. The commentary, the Paramatthajotika, relates the background story to each sutta and explains each verse in detail. The volume includes numerous excerpts from the Niddesa, an ancient commentary already included in the Pali Canon, which offers detailed expositions of each verse in the Atthakavagga, the Parayanavagga, and the Rhinoceros Horn Sutta. Translator Bhikkhu Bodhi provides an insightful, in-depth introduction, a guide to the individual suttas, extensive notes, a list of parallels to the discourses of the Suttanipata, and a list of the numerical sets mentioned in the commentaries.

As they join forces to investigate a murder in St. Augustine, Florida, Claire is thrust into a situation far more dangerous than she’d anticipated, pushing her disorder to a breaking point. Just when she fears she can’t trust her own mind, she discovers Nick’s personal connection to the case—and wonders whether she can trust anyone at all. “Chasing Shadows will most likely keep all readers guessing, and when your mind is made up as to who’s who and who did what, you’ll probably be wrong. This collection examines what was simultaneously a tense and innovative period in modern Jewish history.
