Book excerpt: "Burkett sees his life as a series of literary vignettes, and here are those stories capturing his days in the military. Not tales of a shooting war — rather they're the sharp observations of a young man facing a cold war of the heart." - Shirrel Rhoades Former Associate Publisher, Harper's Magazine Another masterful collection of short fiction from the author of Mean Grey Old Morning, After August, Twin Killing, and Sleeping Planet. Here are impressionistic stories about his military days in Europe and budding love in the City of Lights.

Book excerpt: A young reporter wants so badly to be a foreign correspondent that he leaves his job in the U.S. and heads for Scandinavia to try his luck. He encounters a weird, white world and quickly finds himself covering the Cold War between Finland and the Soviet Union, for which he is denounced in Pravda. He finds himself writing for a journalistic giant, The New York Herald-Tribune, but which pays a pittance for his stories. He covers events in Sweden, Finland, Norway and Denmark, meeting such people as a Nobel Peace Prize winner, a Norwegian war hero, a singer/movie actress, a Prime Minister and a host of other interesting characters. He also meets and marries the girl of his dreams. Then, just as his money is about to run out, he unexpectedly wins a prestigious and lucrative journalism award that brings him back to the U. S. and recognition as a full-ledged foreign correspondent. Told in letters and rememberances, it is a story of suceeding against the odds in the Land of the Midnight Sun.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of the Cold War has focused overwhelmingly on statecraft and military power, an approach that has naturally placed Moscow and Washington center stage. Meanwhile, regions such as Alaska, the polar landscapes, and the cold areas of the Soviet periphery have received little attention. However, such environments were of no small importance during the Cold War: in addition to their symbolic significance, they also had direct implications for everything from military strategy to natural resource management. Through histories of these extremely cold environments, this volume makes a novel intervention in Cold War historiography, one whose global and transnational approach undermines the simple opposition of “East” and “West.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the black ice spy Reiner Paul Fülle, about whom part of his life story is told in this novel. Born in Zwickau and came to the West as a child, Fülle was recruited by the State Security as a young man while visiting his relatives in Thuringia. A spy at the MfS since 1964, he supplied information from the Karlsruhe nuclear research facility to the GDR for adventure and money. On January 19, 1979, Reiner Paul Fülle was arrested by the BKA. He escaped and was brought to the GDR in a wooden box a few days later by the Soviet military mission. Because the BKA officials slipped on black ice during the persecution, abundance was referred to in the German media as black ice spy. Not least because he was very reluctant to be spanked or prescribed, and because his wife persistently refused to move to the GDR, he made his return to the Federal Republic of Germany. Filled with false papers, Fülle returned in late 1981.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What has it meant to be an Americanist? What did it mean to be an Americanist through fascism, war, and occupation? Nightmare Envy and Other Stories is a study of Americanist writing and institutions in the 20th century. Four chapters trace four routes through the mid-twentieth century. The first chapter is the hidden history of American Studies in the United States, Europe and Japan. The second is the strange career of "national character" in anthropology. The third is a contest between military occupation and cultural diplomacy in Europe. The fourth is the emergence and fate of the "American Renaissance," as the scholar and literary critic F.O. Matthiessen carried a canon of radical literature across the Iron Curtain. Each chapter culminates in the postwar period, when the ruin of postwar Europe led writers and intellectuals on both sides of the Atlantic to understand America in new ways. Many of our modern myths of the United States and Europe were formed in this moment. Some saw the United States assume the mantle of cultural redeemer. Others saw a stereotypical America, rich in civilization but poor in culture, overtake a stereotypical Europe, rich in culture and equally rich in disaster. Drawing on American and European archives, the book weaves cultural, intellectual, and diplomatic history, with portraits of Matthiessen, Margaret Mead, Ruth Benedict, David Riesman, Alfred Kazin, and Ralph Ellison. It excavates the history of the Salzburg Seminar in American Civilization, where displaced persons, former Nazis, budding Communists, and glad-handing Americans met on the common ground of American culture. Others found keys to their own contexts in American books, reading Moby-Dick in the ruins. Nightmare Envy and Other Stories chronicles American encounters with European disaster, European encounters with American fiction, and the chasms over which culture had to reach.

Book excerpt: In Falling Snow opens as Iris Crane, an elderly Australian widow struggling to keep up with daily life, receives a surprise invitation in the mail to a reunion at the ancient abbey of Royaumont, the site of a field hospital north of Paris. In the First World War, Iris served there as a nurse in a hospital run entirely by women, and the invitation opens a flood of memories—about how she came to Europe in 1914 in search of her brother, her work alongside the female doctors and administrators as the wounded soldiers flooded into the hospital, and of the dear friends she made at Royaumont who would change her family’s life forever. A moving and uplifting novel about the small unsung acts of heroism of which love makes us capable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tamizdat offers a new perspective on the history of the Cold War by exploring the story of the contraband manuscripts sent from the USSR to the West. A word that means publishing "over there," tamizdat manuscripts were rejected, censored, or never submitted for publication in the Soviet Union and were smuggled through various channels and printed outside the country, with or without their authors' knowledge. Yasha Klots demonstrates how tamizdat contributed to the formation of the twentieth-century Russian literary canon: the majority of contemporary Russian classics first appeared abroad long before they saw publication in Russia. Examining narratives of Stalinism and the Gulag, Klots focuses on contraband manuscripts in the 1960s and 70s, from Khrushchev's Thaw to Stagnation under Brezhnev. Klots revisits the traditional notion of late Soviet culture as a binary opposition between the underground and official state publishing. He shows that even as tamizdat represented an alternative field of cultural production in opposition to the Soviet regime and the dogma of Socialist Realism, it was not devoid of its own hierarchy, ideological agenda, and even censorship. Tamizdat is a cultural history of Russian literature outside the Iron Curtain. The Russian literary diaspora was the indispensable ecosystem for these works. Yet in the post-Stalin years, they also served as a powerful weapon on the cultural fronts of the Cold War, laying bare the geographical, stylistic, and ideological rifts between two disparate yet inextricably intertwined fields of Russian literature, one at home, the other abroad. These words of Maupassant to Jose Maria de Heredia on the occasion of a memorable meeting are, in spite of their morbid solemnity, not an inexact summing up of the brief career during which, for ten years, the writer, by turns undaunted and sorrowful, with the fertility of a master hand-produced poetry, novels, romances and travels, only to sink prematurely into the abyss of madness and death. . . . . This book contains all thirteen volumes of his original short stories. THE ENTIRE ORIGINAL MAUPASSANT SHORT STORIES Over the course of his career, French writer Guy de Maupassant made a number of important contributions to the then-emergent genre of short stories. Today, critics regard him as one of the most accomplished virtuosos of short fiction. This comprehensive collection of Maupassant's short works showcases the writer's unique talents, which include an unvarnished, straightforward style and a mastery of narrative structure.
