Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humorous account of what it’s really like to be a ski rep A useful guide for aspiring ski reps, providing insight into a typical winter season Explores Swedish culture and traditions– portrays Sweden in an honest, different light Andrew Reed spent a winter as a ski rep for a well known UK travel company in the resort of Åre, Sweden. The book is a humorous account of his experiences from the daunting first week of the selection process in Austria, the convoluted journey by road, ship and rail to the resort itself and through the hectic first month of setting up in resort. The chapters that follow reveal a very different type of ski resort to the normal alpine resort with activities that included snowmobile safaris, husky dog sledging, chaotic reindeer rides and visits to the spectacular frozen waterfall. Even the Northern Lights and the real Santa Claus make brief appearances. The book offers a realistic, honest perspective and explains the strains and pressures of the job, including working in close proximity to others over such a long, hard season which finished well beyond the alpine resorts. It will help aspiring reps to prepare by offering useful advice and encouragement, but it is also of interest to the wider ski and travel community. Snow Business is based on Andrew’s Nordic adventures and it provides a fascinating insight into the country, its people and its traditions, along with the quirks of the language. It will appeal to those who love all things skiing, or those with an interest in Swedish culture.

Book excerpt: Award-winning entrepreneur and journalist Shane Snow reveals the counterintuitive reasons why so many partnerships and groups break down--and why some break through. The best teams are more than the sum of their parts, but why does collaboration so often fail to fulfill this promise? In Dream Teams, Snow takes us on an adventure through history, neuroscience, psychology, and business, exploring what separates groups that simply get by together from those that get better together. You'll learn: * How ragtag teams--from soccer clubs to startups to gangs of pirates--beat the odds throughout history. * Why DaimlerChrysler flopped while the Wu-Tang Clan succeeded, and the surprising factor behind most failed mergers, marriages, and partnerships. * What the Wright Brothers' daily arguments can teach us about group problem solving. * Pioneering women in law enforcement, unlikely civil rights collaborators, and underdog armies that did the incredible together. * The team players behind great social movements in history, and the science of becoming open-minded. Provocative and entertaining, Dream Teams is a landmark work that will change the way we think about people, progress, and collaboration.

This book was released on 2003-03-26 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Books and articles come and go, endlessly. But a few do stick, and this book is such a one. Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process broke fresh ground in the understanding of strategy at a time when thinking about strategy was still in its early days, and it has not been displaced since." —David J. Hickson, Emeritus Professor of International Management & Organization, University of Bradford School of Management Originally published in 1978, Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process became an instant classic, as it bridged the formerly separate fields of strategic management and organizational behavior. In this Stanford Business Classics reissue, noted strategy scholar Donald Hambrick provides a new introduction that describes the book's contribution to the field of organization studies. Miles and Snow also contribute new introductory material to update the book's central concepts and themes. Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process focuses on how organizations adapt to their environments. The book introduced a theoretical framework composed of a dynamic adaptive cycle and an empirically based strategy typology showing four different types of adaptation. This framework helped to define subsequent research by other scholars on important topics such as configurational analysis, organizational fit, strategic human resource management, and multi-firm network organizations.

"Home on the Strange" introduces you to some of the odd sights, both natural and man-made that are part of The Land of Enchantment's bizarre landscape. Ecclectic yard decor, other worldly visitors, awesome natural wonders and kooky roadside curiosities combine to make New Mexico seem like a whole different world Meet "Sunny" the dinosaur. The 4:10 Roadrunner and find out why the state's motto is "It Grows as it Goes." Are there really aliens in New Mexico? You Betcha All this and much more ca be found in the pages of "home on the Strange" . Debora Carr was born and raised in the central New Jersey area, graduating from Rutgers University with a BA in Art Education in 1980 and became a successful professional graphic artist and packaging designer. She chose to accompany her parents when they decided to relocate to and retire in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 2003, where she continued her chosen profession of graphic artist, working as a one-person art department for a small print shop. She continued to keep in touch with friends and family members 'back east' by means of periodic humorous newsletters which she called her 'Albu-Quirky Journals' in which she detailed her perspective on life in New Mexico. She later collected some of these reports and rewrote them in a tongue-in-cheek essay form, emulating the short stories written by two of her favorite authors, James Thurber and Mark Twain and published them in her first book, "You Don't Need a Passport to Move to New Mexico." "Home on the Strange" is the sequel, continuing to relate more humorous observations regarding life in the weird Wild West of New Mexico. Debora still revels in collecting stories and photos of all things weird, odd and unusual and is delighted to find that her new home state of New Mexico is overflowing with them. With any luck, it will continue to provide fodder for more entries into her "Albu-Quirky Journals for years to come.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I grew up in the best years this country had ever seen: the thirties, the forties, and the fifties. When I put down my baton, after thirty-nine years of conducting bands and orchestras, I needed a project. I decided to share my early years growing up in the town of Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, by writing an autobiography. As I collected the material for this venture, I came to two conclusions: first, I didn’t have enough interesting material, and second, who would want to read it? Some of those memories combined with later writings were the basis for the first part of this book, “Essays and Reflections.” The “Music and Correspondence” sections speak for themselves. The greeting cards are but a few I have written to my wife, Jean, over our fifty-seven years of marriage. They were my reaction to the commercial bland verse and high-priced cards. Growing up in a funeral home, I had seen enough flowers to last several lifetimes. I very seldom gave my wife flowers. As for the poetry, it came about by accident. It started with writing song lyrics and just seemed to segue into the poems. I never really looked for a poem subject; every day events presented themselves with constant frequency. The individual limericks added a personal touch to my correspondence and were greatly appreciated by the receiver. Many of the later poems could not have been written at an earlier age. Again, experience is a writing necessity. I do hope you enjoy my writings, my humor, and my comments on life. I am surprised I have made this venture into writing a book at age eighty-six, but as I remarked at the end of my final concert, “Tonight, I end my conducting career.” I broke my baton here. “Old conductors never die, they’re always beating time. Good-bye.”

Book excerpt: Winter tourism has seen increased levels of investment in recent times, in an effort to reduce economic risk, address environmental concerns and adapt to the effects of global warming. New ski destinations are developing and merging with traditional ones to increase spatial distribution, while many established leading resorts are adapting their management models. Climate change adaptation processes are supported by the reduction of CO2 emissions and energy consumption in ski resorts. Current planning challenges include the increasing importance of scenic beauty, nature and sustainable development, as well as snow reliability, snow management and safety issues.
